Default Nobody appreciates a show anymore

So I entered the Showgirl of the Year competition at my club. Its basically just a contest we can choose to enter and compete for who has the best theme set. If you win you move on to regionals, which is in Vegas, and you win $1500, $750 for second place, and $500 for third. I ended up coming in third and I think it was bullshit. I decided on a witch theme (since its so close to Halloween) and for my props I used a witch's cauldron that you fill with water and plug in so it really emits a foggy mist and has lights inside that change colors, I decorated the back of the stage with fake spiderwebs, had a cardboard life size coffin that I had my hubby lay in dressed as a zombie, and had other props like fake body parts, a skull and other things placed on the stage. I came out in full length robe w/hood (under it I had a hott cupless vinyl corsett with a matching bikini and bottoms) and pretended to cast a spell for about 1 minute. Then I had my hubby pop out the coffin make a round around the stage and leave. I put a lot of thought, energy, and money into the set and I know I ROCKED it.

The girl that came in second came out dressed in a cute business suit, danced for her first her song while stripping (just like any other night) and for her second song she lotioned herself. She is attractive and a decent dancer, but so am I. She had zero props and no apparrent theme at all. The girl who won hung up a sheet at the back of the stage and taped some pics of girls from a Playboy mag and came out and danced to "Girls, Girls, Girls" by Motley Crue for literally one minute. She came out did one pole trick and then took off her boots. For her second song another girl (who used to work at this club) comes onstage and they proceed to give a girl on girl show. They just rub each with lotion, suck each others tits, make out, and pretend or actually eat each other out. Thats it. This girl is cute and she can rock the pole far better than anyone at my club so everyone expects her to win just because of her pole skills, but she did only 1 trick. Her 'costume' was also a white cotton wife beater and a pair of booty shorts. I just don't understand how doing soft core and lotioning oneself is a skill, let alone a win. I also read the judges scorecards and it really pissed me off. There were 5 judges and only two gave me good scores, one average, and the other terrible scores. The girls before me would even get high scores on things like set and props when they had NO PROPS!!! I just didn't understand how I made my set look incredible and wore a costume, but girls who wore no costume, had no props, but yet scored far better than me on that criteria. If we are competing I don't think its fair to have another girl up there with you for 90% of your set, while doing fucking porn. I thought looking at the judges scorecard will help me realize things I overlooked or could've done better but it just pissed me off because I got low scores on obvious bullshit things, things I KNOW that I did good, and so on. It makes me think that the judges were a bit racist. Either way, nobody appreciates a good show anymore. What do ya'll think, and anyone else have a bad experience with bullshit judges?

Probably judged by crowd reaction, and girls rubbing eachother down is sure to get a big one. Sounds like you spent more energy on the show part, and not enough on working the crowd.. Plus you had your husband on stage? Yeah, no. As nice as a good show is, it's a strip club, not a dance theater.

I understand this, and I think many of us feel this pressure even on a normal day at the club. I get so much less appreciation when I dance (and I'm a pretty good dancer) compared to the girls who get up there and eat each other out.

    I feel you girl.

The girl who won SGotY at my club had her husband on stage.
It's not like the customers know it's her husband... to them it's just some guy helping out with the show.
I think your show sounds really cool. I hate when girls have a really half-assed theme set... and just make it something really dirty to compensate for lack of creativity.

Seems like your judges mistook the categories "set and props" for "would you like to see this show again on a cool set with props".

No not judged by crowd reaction, crowd reaction was part of overall scores on your set and like I said I had the loudest crowd reaction of anybody. There is also an evening gown competiton ( worth 15 points) and a couch dance competition also worth 15 points. Your performance was worth 65 points all together (crowd reaction is worth 10 out of that 65 points) and to get LOWER scores on props to those that had zero scream mental retardation or racism to me. Perhaps you should read my post because I stated I casted a spell, he burst out of the coffin walked around the stage once and exits. My skit was 8 minutes all together and he was about 40 seconds of it. It wasn't as if he was up there dancing with me, we had ZERO physical contact with each other.

Exactly. Only the couple of club regs (who aren't real customers) MGMT, and the one reg I had that came to lend support knew he was my husband. When I get a 2 out of ten on props and girls with zero or very little props get a 8 or ten, then yeah the judges are idiots. I definetely didn't do everything perfect but I know I did a good job and the judges obviously didn't want me to win for whatever reason based on some of the obviously untrue scores they gave.

^^I wish I was kidding. One judge gave me 2 and another gave me a 3 out of ten, as well as bad scores on almost everything else. I can understand that it was possible some of the judges just didn't like the show, but those scores on props ??? COME ON.

Wow. Your show sounds awesome. Actually, it's probably too awesome to be held at a stripclub, which is really sad. It's definitely the sort of thing I'd like to see.

Then again, I really like to see people really get into Halloween. It makes me happy.

Sounds like a great show. Try not to feel too bad because it sounds pretty freaking obvious the judging was totally fixed. I don't think I could ever do comps for this very reason. I've almost never seen fair judging. How embarrassing for the girl who won because surely in Vegas she is going to be made to look like a fool.

Why do people always say this when faced with something they disagree with? I obviously read your post and replied accordingly. You were quite vague about what it is you actually did so reading your post only takes me so far here.

See, I wasn't there so all I can rely on is whatever mental imagery you've given me.. and right now I'm picturing someone in a robe wiggling her fingers and shaking her ass, apparently "casting a spell!" at a casket until some guy pops out (which could have been improved immensely if you had a hot naked zombie girl pop out instead [think of the chick from 13 Ghosts remake if you can't picture hot naked zombie girls]) and then the zombie guy stealing the focus of the show. <--- That's the problem to me. YOU are supposed to be the focus. Or if you did have a hot naked zombie girl it wouldn't have mattered because either way they'd get to watch a hot naked girl, which is what they came for.

...That's the impression I got from your original post, but now rereading it with your new comment, I don't know what to think...

See, in your original post you said you cast a spell "for about 1 minute" and that your hubby "popped out the coffin make a round around the stage [for 40 seconds?] and leave." but in this post I replied to you said your skit was about 8 minutes. This does not compute. Did you keep dancing when he left or was he the end of your skit? If you kept dancing what did you do to keep the show interesting? If it ended when he left, where did the other 6 minutes go?

See why one might be a little confused/curious ?

^^^^OMG, have you ever seen a show before? REALLY? Are you actually asking this question?

Ok, a feature presentation has a 'set up'. Where the beginning establishes your character and the setting. The spell and Zombie were the set up. AFTER set up, the dancer starts to disrobe to take the character to a sexier level. This is called a show. Sorry girl, just had to kindergarten it out for you.

h4bc, you did a great job keeping the show alive...so to speak, haha. I am sorry you had that experience. I feel you, been there myself a few times! Glad you were able to vent. Now don't give up!

She made it sound like her whole show was "casting a spell" and poof, a guy comes out, and that's it show's over. She made no mention of what she did before/after besides what the other girls did. Sounds to me like the first minute and a half were the highlight and the rest was just boring filler. That's probably why she lost. At least the other girls kept things interesting (maybe not to her since she lost, but come on- girls oiling eachother up and down is pretty fucking hot any way you spin it.)

... Oh sorry, I forgot I'm supposed to automatically feel sorry for anyone who posts here with their pity stories, even if it just comes off as being a sore loser. Pardon me for actually being curious as to what really happened since as you know, we only have the story she tells us. Wonder what the girl who won would have to say about it.

And yes I am fully aware of the bitchy undertone of this post... figured I'd drop to your level while I reply to you... Before I was just curious but I keep forgetting you girls get worked up so easily.

I agree about not giving up. If you received a good crowd response, that means your show was definitely appreciated. In LA, the Rhino Entertaner of the Year contests are going on and there were people who didn't place in the top two each week who I thought FOR SURE would be going on to finals, as did a lot of other people.

Customers will remember you and they will continue to be fans of yours after the competition is over. Congratulations on a job well done. Don't let the outcome completely deter you, as I'm sure you have garnered valuable recognition amongst customers who may return in the future just to see 'that sexy witch.'

There were dancers I saw before their performance that I wouldn't have looked twice at until they got on stage and rocked it, whether they were better than other performers or not. Their stage presence, creativity, and just all-around awesomeness won me over as a fan!

To answer your first question, yes after the spell was cast I danced for 2 songs that were 3 and a half minutes each. The Intro (the first 1 minute) of the set was when I cast the spell. My hubby pops out of the coffin and makes his round then leaves the stage as soon as the second song begins, in tune to the beat. He makes his round then leaves. So first song is 1 min where I cast the spell, 2nd 3 1/2 min, 3rd 3 1/2 min. My hubby takes about 20/40 seconds of the second song. I can't say for certain how many seconds it took, he was walking slow and zombie like, but definetely not more than 40 seconds. I dance the remainder of the two songs. While he makes his round, I throw off my robe and spin around on one the poles. I don't beleive my stage sets are 'boring filler,' even when I'm dancing on a regular night, let alone when I'm competing. I did three pole tricks and one 'tricky' spin where I throw my legs up, grab the leg with one leg and spin around on it with one leg for a few seconds. You're probably familiar with the move but I don't know what its called.

You really thought I would just walk out, do a spell, 'dance' with my hubby, leave and then be 'sore' about losing? I kept a smile on my face and gave it all the energy I got. I tried to be creative and put on a show, and I feel like no matter what I did, whether it was perfect or not I would have still gotten some the lowest scores of anybody competing. I BARELY beat out the 3 girls who didn't place. And when I tell you these girls that didn't place did awful, I mean they did awful. Never smiled, no props, no costumes, and (not trying to be mean) but they are unattractive dancers and they do NOT have a good body, hell not even a decent body. The only reason I even placed was because of the 2 judges that gave me awesome scores. It wasn't the fact that I lost (yes it was dissappointing) but the scores I got.

I didn't expect to win going into the contest, because as I said before, the girl that got the win is an amazing pole dancer. If all she did was pole tricks she would win because she is that impressive. She has won the competition on two other occassions. She is almost 40, has been dancing 15+ years, and does pole tricks as naturally as we breath. Her shows are generally awesome even if they are a bit stale theme wise and "easy" as far as creativity goes. This show was NOT awesome. She came out, did one pole trick (that didn't even show off her talent) and then literally sat down and took off her boots. Her first song was literally 1 minute (if even, I think I'm being generous here), and this is all that she does. The second song was her and her friend stripping, and doing soft core. Sexy, yes, but worth the win? Hell no IMO.

Call me crazy, but I guess I don't get why anyone would think this is worthy of a win.

The second place winner did a better show than that, at least she danced for an entire song, did one or 2 pole tricks, and actually engaged with the audience before she lotioned herself.

Maybe I'm just a bitter bitch, but if 90% of your show is you lotioning yourself or doing porn, then you totally suck as an entertainer. I could see doing it at the end to 'sexy' things up, but for that to be 90% of your show?? Come on, you've got to be kidding!

I was a bit 'worked up' I guess, so I'm sorry if I seemed snappy with you, looking at my scores from some of the judges really pissed me off. The fact that I got low scores on things that were obviously not true is what killed it for me. I could understand if I lost by a couple points, but I lost by at least 25 points. It was not close at all, she smoked everyone by her set. The fact that I got low scores on set, props, costume, just seem a bit racist to me, as it would be very obvious to anyone watching that my set and theme was the best out of anyone. The fact that they gave me low scores on crowd reaction seemed racist when I had the loudest reaction. The 2 judges that gave me good scores even wrote, "very loud crowd reaction," and "best reaction." Then I would score a 2 or 3 from the other judges, which would mean I had very little crowd reaction. There was one table of girls that went nuts when I did my show! They hooted for all the performers but they went absolutely nuts when I did mine. My reg and his friends also went all out with the noise as well as a few people in the audience.

I think I should of found a way to 'sex' my routine up a bit. Thats why I went with the corsett (which was really sexy) and not a witch costume, because I couldn't find a witch costume that was sexy enough. I think I could've gave more eye contact. I did give eye contact, but I could've done more. The second place winner gave a shit ton of eye contact. The winner did not as her face was generally buried in her friends boobs/crotch. Its really the scores I got that make me angry. I hate throwing out the race card, but some of the low scores I got seem pretty unbelievable to me.

Yes I considered the use of a zombie girl, but it wasn't so much of a possibility for me because I don't have any female friends. There are a couple of girls from my club I could've used for the set but they don't work on Wed, (which was when the show was) and I live over an hour away which made meeting up for practice sessions a bit difficult. That would've been sexier, but the zombie was not the main focus of the show, and I didn't want it to be. I don't think he 'stole' the show because he was not in it very much, and exited the stage, and sat and watched the rest where he was not visible to the crowd. You just said yourself that the entertainer is suppossed to be the focus, but the girl who won had another girl up there w/her for most of her set. It is my opinion that an entertainer can't carry a show based on her skills if she needs to resort to doing soft core for an entire set, which is what the winner did. Totally neglecting the crowd and judges while doing girl/girl screams boring as hell, no skills, no creativity, and is not a theme set IMO. If I am to ever judge a competition and a dancer does this, she can count on the lowest scores possible from me. If you dance and put on a good show for at least 1 long song (preferably 2 songs if you are going to have 1 entire song of girl/girl or lotion) then I could understand.

Really? Thats the best you got? I will go back and edit in paragraphs for you, if you are really having that much problem following it. I already apologized for any bitchiness you thought I directed at you, I didn't mean to make you sound like an idiot simply for disagreeing. Now I'm starting to regret it.

    FYI- Paragraphs inserted!

Thats exactly why the thread topic is "Nobody appreciates a show anymore"

... Oh sorry, I forgot I'm supposed to automatically feel sorry for anyone who posts here with their pity stories, even if it just comes off as being a sore loser.
I completely understand where you are coming from on this. I know some of the posters here are complainers when they really just need to look in the mirror to get their answers. I know this because I have met many of them. I too have a hard time coddling just anyone who thinks they belong in this business. I don't automatically feel sorry for anyone.

I personally however will applaud ANYONE trying to put some value in adult ENTERTAINMENT- which is what this industry is supposed to be and what the OP was trying to do.

I spoke to you like an ignorant person, because you made an ignorant comment. You assumed instead of asking when you didn't understand completely. If the picture wasn't painted clearly to you (someone who obviously had never seen a show before), then you could have politely asked for more clarification.

I am not saying her show was worth winning the competition. I didn't see it. I am saying that you don't know what you are talking about.

Thank you. I couldn't have said it better myself. Off topic, but I would like to tell you that you are wonderful entertainer. I have a pole-lympics video of the Minneapolis Deja Vu that you were in years ago. You did a wonderful Titanic set that was beautiful. All the ladies were really good and talented. But you definetely had the style, grace, and everything else mixed in.

I think it may be difficult for those who haven't seen any shows and are not familiar with theme sets to understand. The point is that you are suppossed to have a theme and establish a character, as you said. I think any feature performer and seasoned entertainer will admit that one's ability to 'fool around' with another girl and lotion oneself is not a show. Its a cheap way of getting yourself a top spot and gives a black eye to REAL performers. If that is all you can showcase, then please stay the hell away from competitions. I'm so tired of seeing it. There is more to theme/feature sets than just being hot, just as there is more to stripping onstage than just taking off your top.

Actually... That's pretty much any theme set for Rhino/Vu competitions... unless maybe the girl does something else for the last half of the second song like oil, lotion, body paint...

Girl comes out... spends a minute or two working out her theme... and then... for the most part... they just dance for the rest of it...
Maybe pick back up a prop or do some small bits that are theme related... but... that's normally it.

I feel your pain. My club had a costume contest last Friday (one of three) and I painted myself blue, did the makeup and hair, and went as Mystique. One of my other friends was a zombie, and she painted herself green, used prosthetics etc.

    The girl who won?

    A "sexy cat".

I was beyond pissed. I was like DUDE I AM FUCKING BLUE. It took me two hours to do it. She she puts on a bikini and some cat ears and a tail and wins?

    FAIL.

Yeah messing around in chicago clubs I no loner like club contests...They always seem to be rigged especially the amatuer nights where you can win to get a job there...I especially hate those because i take my dancing seriously and do not have time to play games to get a job stripping...

I will say that I enjoy and love shows. One thing to remember is that your hard work does pay off. there is always someone out there that appreciates the ones that go the extra mile and actually perform.
still here.... just in another chapter..

The Halloween theme sounds really cool. What songs did you dance to (I would have have chosen Time Warp but that's just me). Going by what you said I probably would have chosen you because I always liked dancers who did a theme (I was one of them because I come from a dance/theatre background). Sad to say not surprised the first girl won. I think girl girl shows are tacky but in many cases judges often think sleazy=great. It was probably was rigged so it wouldn't have mattered what you did anyway.
