^ Yes. I, obviously, also don't know her...
but a lot of the time she just goes so far out of her way to make women look like these weak, pathetic people who go through hell on a day to day basis and for what? -insert over dramatic statement about men and/or society not being worth it here-...

Idk. She seems to have this impression that all women are worthless morons until she fixes their whole lives and their outlook on things for them.

She does not have a shred of empathy. I think she has narcissistic personality disorder. And she's not so hot anymore.

My friend in NYC worked down the street from her studio, and would see her and her crew at lunch in restaurants in the neighborhood. She was ALWAYS looking around waiting for people to recognize her, ready to get "in character" whereas the rest of her crew tried to keep a low profile and just eat.

at least mariah carey has talent. In fact I think she's extremely gifted vocally. She might be kind of trashy, sure, but whatevs, she's had a shit load of hits. Tyra banks isn't anywhere even close to mariah carey's ball park.

that's because she lost a boyfriend(or was it a fiance) to a stripper, and now she hates all of us. If she's supposedly so much better than us, whyd she get dumped for one of us? I can't fucking stand her. She was actually somewhat attractive before she opened her mouth and started talking.

Ya I think she'd make a great stripper... Hot and not much going on upstairs hence the mens can feel important... she just loves to talk about herself eh? The only thing I do like about her is she will ask dumb questions when she doesn't know the answer. (I used to really struggle with asking something when I didn't know, so am always amazed by people who can) However... I think that may be because she is too dumb to realize its a dumb question...

    She's a bore.

I'm not sure who she's entertaining, but it's definitely not me.

It cracks me up how she has strippers on, and members of the audience look so in-shock from what they are saying lol. That's just one big fake, dramatic, mess.

I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

I remember when she had a doctor bring an ultrasound machine on stage and do an ultrasound of her boobs just to prove to everyone that she didn't get implants. Is that crazy or what? She always has to talk about how she's a "woman of color" and how she's "plus size". Big motherfucking deal. I'm a small, white woman. Does that mean I have to parade around trying to make myself feel special?

I can't stand people that talk about being black and plus size like it's some special thing and like it makes them stronger because of it. Being a different skin tone than me or a plus size model doesn't mean you've had to struggle your whole life. She just tries to make it seem that way.

Oprah is a real woman, and a real role model. Her struggles with being molested as a child and being a self-made billionaire have inspired me and many others. She doesn't parade around talking about how she's dark skinned and plus size, in fact, she talks about losing weight and has had quite the public struggle with her dramatic weight losses and gains over the years.
If you are willing to do for one year what other's won't, you can spend a lifetime doing what other's cant.

...somebody tell me, has Oprah had strippers on her show and, if so, how was it played out compared to Tyra's show? As mentioned, it seems TV shows skew/precondition their audience to support their host. Using applause signs, coaching during commercials, etc... For example, Jerry Springer's crowd generally loves strippers.

Jerry Springer's crowd acts like a bunch of ignorant, red-necked buffoons. The whole show is just GROSS.

I'd like to be funny here and say I love it, but I just cannot be that big of a liar.

Are you serious? I'm not black, but it's obvious even to me that your white privilege is showing.

Being black (or any other racial minority in America) does not automatically mean that you are stronger, but you would be foolish to think that the experience a black woman has in America is exactly the same as yours as a white woman in America. Is life a struggle everyday for black Americans just because they are black? No, of course not. But have you ever been discriminated against in America because of your white skin? I'd guess not, and if you have, it wouldn't compare to to the racial discrimination many Asians, blacks, and other minorities have experienced.

I know this isn't the topic of the thread, but I felt it needed to be said. Perhaps you've never taken a sociology class and have therefore never learned about white privilege or race, class, or gender issues for that matter. I'm not trying to attack you, but I am trying to make you aware.

Also, I'd like to add that I am not a fan of Tyra Banks in any way, shape, or form. I hate her overly dramatic antics, how she makes herself the center of everything, and how patronizing she is to guests that she sees as beneath her.

However, your post really rubbed me the wrong way. Tyra IS sensational about race topics, but EVERY topic on her show is sensational and over the top. Her show is pure garbage.

If you've followed Oprah for a while, you'll know that SHE has talked about her experience as a black woman trying to make it in the American entertainment industry. She doesn't whine or say "woe is me" about it. Instead, she has acknowledged that it was a challenge because some people discriminated against her or underestimated her due to to the color of her skin.

I'm sorry you don't agree with my viewpoint, but I don't think that a black woman in America struggles anymore than a white woman in America. I refuse to buy into that idea or that any other minorities are mistreated. Millions of illegal immigrants come to this country and receive free health care that they never repay AND now our public schools are incorporating Spanish class into their graduation requirements. I fully understand the value of learning a second language, but I do not think that the second language should be chosen for the student, they should be given several options.

To answer your question, I haven't ever been discriminated against because of my 'white skin', but I have been discriminated against plenty of other times. Why? Because I'm a woman and up until recently I wasn't a legal adult. That barred me from the basic right to safety, food, and shelter because I was unable to seek certain employment or even so much as take myself to the doctors without my parent's permission. Since my mother is a raging alcoholic quite often my basic needs got pushed to the back burner so she could drink and waste my father's child support on her alcohol. The state failed me and the multiple times that I called 911 begging for help for numerous alcohol-related mishaps I was blatantly ignored by law enforcement. Why? I was not 'of age'. The system failed me and is continuing to fail me, and I do not trust our government. Do I think that makes me better or stronger or 'entitled' to a month to celebrate my struggles? Not at all. I think that's just part of life and that I'll be alright in the end.

I have even been told that I will not be a 'fit' mother because of my age and because I have chosen to dance. My child's paternal grandfather had the balls to ask me why I felt that I could do a better job raising my child than someone "with a $200,000 salary and a college degree". If that's not being discriminated against then I don't know what is. I've even been discriminated against while pregnant! I lost a job as a result of my pregnancy, but they tried to make it look like there was another reason. My firing conveniently took place the day after I informed my boss of my pregnancy.

I am not claiming that prejudice and discrimination do not exist, but too often people focus on the racial instances. Children are forced to rely on their parents that are too often self-serving, neglectful, ignorant, or just plain stupid. Their options are extremely limited other than reaching out to social services for assistance and possibly being placed in a strange foster caregiver's home. I've dealt with social services enough times to know that they are a joke.

Children, particularly older teens, are still humans with basic rights that are too often ignored by the government. They believe if a child is fed, warm, and sheltered then they should be satisfied with that until they turn 18. Too often the hands of time cannot be undone after years of mental abuse, religious prejudices, pitiful discipline techniques, an embarrassing public school system, and improper nutrition. Who is going to save them after nearly two decades of being forced to conform to the ideals of people that know nothing about raising children? You don't need a license to be a parent, and you really don't even need a brain. Any idiot can get knocked up and try to be a parent, but that concept has failed time and time again.

I believe that there are so many forms of discrimination; ageism, sexism, homophobia, religious intolerance, racism, reverse racism, and classism, that it is unfair to try to say that blacks (receiving the most publicity for racial discrimination) have had a notable amount of struggles in comparison to someone that is of another ethnicity. Each person has a different story and I do not believe that you can classify an entire group as disadvantaged as some people have done towards blacks. There are even some black people that do not want special treatment or attention given to their skin color, who get irritated and enraged at anti-race movements.

It's all a matter of perspective, and that's mine.
If you are willing to do for one year what other's won't, you can spend a lifetime doing what other's cant.

i don't know if you need to google what white privilege is, or phone a friend, or simply ask somebody, but your post is ripe with it.

This is an "in general" concept. There are 50 million stories that could be told where an african american had a better start and an overall better life than in Laurisa's case. While it may apply to some, it can't be used for all.

I had borderline personality disorder, and had a father who was an alcoholic who had bpd. But I'm not running around screaming "normal" privelege at people (although in my case, I could have a point), or even looking for it. I work with the hand I was dealt. Why some of you don't, I can't understand.

In regard to your the first point in bold, you completely missed the point of my post. That's most likely due to white privilege.

To your second point in bold, what's wrong with having Spanish as a graduation requirement? As of right now, nothing is being done that will completely stop illegal immigration. They're coming here, and they're a large consumer base. The Hispanic population in America will triple by the 2050's. Why wouldn't you want to learn at least basic Spanish? In America, it's an asset. I learn Spanish at university now so that it will help me get a great job in the future. Employers love bilingual employees, and they're often paid more. Instead of complaining about it, why don't you turn it into an advantage for yourself?

I'm sorry about your alcoholic parent and your bad upbringing. Also, it's terrible that you've been a victim of sexism and of discrimination due to your pregnancy. However, the topic I was discussing was racism and racial discrimination.

I'm not saying you need to go march for the end of racial discrimination. However, if you can not at least acknowledge that black people and other racial minorities in America are sometimes discriminated against because of their skin color, then there's nothing I can say to you to make you understand that it does. I'm not saying every white person discriminates against minorities. That's not true! And I'm not saying every minority is discriminated against, or discriminated against often. That's not true.

However, it is 100% true that racism does exist.

Why can you acknowledge that discrimination due to gender, pregnancy, and age exists, but not that a black woman might have a hard time because of her skin color?

To me, this signals that you can't look past your own situation (as someone who is a woman, pregnant, and was recently a minor) to recognize that others have been discriminated against as well.
