Default Playing the race card . . .

At the club in question, it is predominately white with some hispanic and a smattering of black customers.

    Overheard in the LD room

Dancer: oh no,put that back on [Custy (who is black) had taken off shirt]

    unintelligible mumbling . . . .

Dancer: no no no, I can't do this. [She walks away]

Manager (who is black): What's up?

Custy: You tell me, what's up?

Manager: I asked you, what's up?

Custy: What do you mean, what's up?

[This goes on for at least a minute. I am trying not to laugh my ass off]

Custy: You're my niggah, right? We're on the same page, right?

Manager: We've always been on the same page.

Custy: You've got my back, right? You're my niggah.

[This also goes on for a minute or so, finally the manager gets the custy to leave the LD room.]

So, how often and in what ways do custies play the race card (or any other "card" for that matter) to get more or special treatment?

In my area the race card is pretty irrelevant. I know a few bouncers and a few club managers from being a regular over the years. There is no advantage in this other than the occasional free drink or waived cover charge. I go to see the dancers and the smart ones don't care who you know, only how much you spend on them.

I happen to like Asian and Brazilian dancers. Are they playing the race card by exploiting my preference for their ethnic back ground? I guess it depends on how you look at it. To me, selling your ethnicity is no different than selling your blondness, or your boobage...Any dancer is going to use whatever she has at her disposal to sell dances.

From the customer's side I don't see it. None of the dancers I know give preferential treatment to black guys, hispanic guys, Asian guys or, in my case, middle aged chubby guys of Italian descent. They only love me for my money....

Ok. I am a pretty intelligent girl and for some reason my brain exploded when I read that.

Are you trying to say that the girl wasn't ok with a black dude taking off his shrt, the guy took it as racism and the black manager placated him?

Why not say that instead of posting dialogue...?

My club is the opposite. After we started having some recent issues with fights breaking out, we stopped serving Hennessy and we aren't supposed to dance to hip-hop anymore (Fuck that!). It's bullshit. The fights weren't even started by black people!

I don't think I've ever seen anyone 'place the race card' effectively. And anyway, in your example, I don't even see that the black guy played a race card: seemed he was more checking for camaraderie (in his own dialect, yes) than anything else.

Seems like your observation is stemming from the pathetic white man's claim that "the (gays/blacks/poor) actually have more rights than we do in America!!" (a la Borat) Sorry, not true.

^^ The point of the post was that the customer was appealing to the black manager to not throw him out.

I thought the whole point of the post was to see how often we observe behavior like this.

    I'd say quite a bit,

    And it sucks.

Also, if a customer can't get extras from me it's always the "Oh it's because I'm black" (Or hispanic) bullshit.

Okay, I missed that. Still, I very rarely see it happen. I see straight up racism much more often than I see reverse racism.

^^ Sorry, that is the point, what I meant was the post was highlighting the interaction between the manager and the customer and the custy's attempt to get out of being thrown out by appealing to the manager's shared race. The interaction between the custy and the dancer just set up the interaction.

^ Yes, I get it now. I missed the fact that the manager was black.

Still, to what extent could you argue that he was just playing the camaraderie card and not the race card? "Niggah" is often used as like 'friend' or similar. He was asking the manager to ease up on him, to let it go. Not necessarily because of race.

I see what you mean though. Doesn't seem like a huge deal, but I see what you mean.

^ I think you're absolutely right about the camaraderie thing, the customer took the obvious race route in an attempt to get out of his situation. I never used the term "racism," that was JayATee's invention. But the customer was appealing to the race card to establish some "special" connection with the manager.

I know some girls get this kind of thing, as well, whatever race. It usually happens when the customer and dancer are the minority within the particular club environment, and he tries to convince the dancer that since they're both "whatever" he should get maybe a little more.

So yes, the camaraderie angle was exactly what I'm talking about, claiming some superficial similarity and then pushing that for more than it's worth.

I see this a lot in one club I go to. The majority of the dancers are Brazilian and the vast majority of the customers are as well. It's a low end club where stage tipping or a few bucks passed at the bar are the only way for a dancer to make money. The South American guys constantly try to get the ladies to sit with them for no little to no money on the premise that they both speak the same language, are far from home, and need to stick together. The dancers, on the other hand, flock to the American guys who will tip them a twenty to sit at the bar or a table with them even if they can barely communicate with each other.

The last thing most South American dancers want anything to do with is a South American customer...

I actually understood what SG meant with his original post, but that's probably not a good thing for me, him, or mankind! I must be playing the customer card.

Charlie61: Thanks for trying to get this thread on track, but I prefer the offtrack places some of these threads go. I blame Charlie for my deviation, but I'm amused when a club won't play certain songs for the element they believe it attracts - Then plays other music that suggests all kinds of debauchery. I could care less about the music in clubs, but seriously wonder about what's deemed acceptable and what's not.

Actually the response was to med, hence the use of the quote function. Apparently he wasn't smart enough to realize that.

I got your point right away. Im black and I think its hilarious. Hahahaha. Fucking idiot that guy is! And I bet he gave the manger the death stare for kicking him out too ha! Priceless. But yes black guys do try and get more from me seeing that we are both black...and for some reason they think they have a better shot at actually getting my number or something lol. Funny thing is that the more "urban" younger, wanna be black,or genuinly has black roots/tendencies because he grew up in a predominetly(spell check) black area who are white guys try to pull the same shit and expect special treatment also for some reason...the white guys like that seem to be going out of their way to impress me! Ha! But most of the times im a white men's fetish. Lol but im one of those black chicks who are just pretty enough to make any man forget my race,so that works out a lot for me.

    Duh The Fame Card?

Hmm. The worst was when I was working in this one bar where occasionally celebrities/rock bands/rap groups/etc. who were playing in town would stop in and "peep the scenery." These guys are constantly sucking up the bar and stage managers attention and getting complementary this and that, yet they're NOT spending as much money as they should probably be, and want WAY more than anyone there is willing to offer, even if they are on the 'cover of the mother-effin' Rolling Stone' this month. On many occasions I've seen these guys get "ejected" from the bar for some dumb reason or another, and on their way out the door, you always hear, "I'm Kenny Effin' G, you assholes!!!" trailing out the door.
