Default Long Term Effects of Meth Abuse

So Ive been diagnosed with ADD and hypothyroidism, and both are currently being treated. I am still having pretty serious issues w/ my thyroids, its still barely producing any hormone and my meds were doubled... so waiting until I have to do 3 month blood tests to check them...

I am still feeling pretty stressed out, a lot of anxiety, very very fatigued, and very moody....I found that both meds help a little, but maybe I am experiencing some after effects of roughly 2 years of meth usage.(not recent of course) I have been doin some research online as of the long term affects of this drug, and my symtoms match up, so Im wondering if this is my problem...

It would be easier if I had insurance to deal w/ the issue, but I figured maybe someone here might have some info about herbs or something I can try to help out w/ my issues..... I also notice it HARD as hell to remember things, since I am back in school.. like studying is not nearly as easy as it used to be.

    Thanks in advance

I have not ever used meth, but kudos to you for staying clean and being a good mom!

Unfortunately, a lot of those long term effects are permanent from brain damage. If you are interested in alternative medicine, I would go see an acupuncturist, or an herbalist. I know my education isn't complete, but I really can't offer you any advice as I am going to be practicing osteopathic medicine. Being in New Orleans I am sure you will easily find an herbalist!

Most definitely!! That life is soo distant and I am so much happier now!! It was recreational for a while... to stay up for days, just working and partying.... and then I realized I was addicted when I was just at the bottom of the barrel and wanted to kill myself....

I was using back in 2004-06... I was extremely paranoid while during it, and it just got progressively worse.... I can look back @ days I just wanted to drive my car off the bridge I was so depressed, but that is also a side effect I believe.... Being completely sober years later, I know there has to be some sort of LT effects from using... I sometimes get some sort of strange paranoia.. hear things.. (not people telling me to do things, lol i must sound really crazy), mostly just very bad mood swings, aggitated easily, and i just find it VERY hard to study now..

I will def check into an herbalist in the area, I just need to figure out how to go about looking for/finding one!!!

Here's an article about the long term effects of Meth: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/meth/body/

My best friend from high school had a meth habit for years. She ended up losing her marriage and kids and eventually being homeless before she was able to quit. One of her daughters has disowned her but her youngest doesn't remember the years she used, so the youngest is in facebook contact with her.

I think a lot of the effects are long term, but manageable. I've never done anything harder than mj, so I can't really relate to what it must be like to deal with those symptoms for a long period of time.

You might ask your Dr. if you could experience relief from the use of Deprenyl. It is used in Parkinson's patients who suffer low dopamine production that causes their condition. Although it kind of sounds like apples and oranges, as meth damages the dopamine receptors, not it's production. There might be something similar out there that repairs the receptors or helps the receptors to work more efficiently.

I like this kind of science-y stuff. Maybe I should consider going into neurobiology instead of economics.

I thought I'd post this here, many of my friends and peers have been afflicted with Meth related health issues, and it seems like the worst of it comes after you STOP using. What a beast.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with or have ever heard of PAWS (Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome), but there are seem to be several ways to treat this which don't include medication. PAWS is very common in people who formerly used Meth.

Of course, if you're being treated with medication, there's nothing wrong with that, but sometimes people who have faced addiction don't want to rely on drugs to solve all their problems. And, let's face it, drugs these days come with some pretty hefty side effects.

I just thought I'd share this, and thank Paris for her informative post and the link included. This is great information to have here.

Taking thyroid hormone to counter hypothyroidism isn't "taking drugs." Your body needs this thyroid to function properly. She's simply replacing what her body can no longer produce or process naturally.

To the OP, I know that not having insurance exacerbates a difficult situation. But please don't think that "herbalists" are going to be able to provide real relief. Even in cases where an alternative treatment might be scientifically valid, the number of quacks out there, plus the number of people peddling solutions based on NO valid research, makes this a risky proposition. In addition, a given herb or whatever might have some validity as a treatment, but herbs are supplements are unregulated in the US so you never know if you are getting the real thing in a stable, effective form.

You might take a look at Dr. Andrew Weil's web site. He is a respected MD who practices alternative medicine. I did a search on the word "withdrawal" and got these articles:
. There might not be anything specifically useful there for you, but that will give you an idea of the sort of information you should be seeking out.
