Angry Is your club this strict??

I started dancing a few weeks ago and I have been working my ass off. I was supposed to work tonight but I have been throwing up and feeling like crap all day. There was asolutlely no way I could dance and work at my club for 8 hours tonight. I called my work to tell them I was very sick and couldn't come in and they were so PISSED. They said I needed a doctor's note TONIGHT and if I didn't get one, it would be a $100 fine. Really? I see no need to go to a fricken doctor. Just some simple over-the-counter meds, some soup, and a good nights rest is all I really need. Anyone else think this is ridiculous or have a club like this?

**UPDATE** Ok I went to the doctor Monday morning and turns out I have the flu. It is now Tuesday and I have to work but, having horrible diarrhea and feeling like crap, ain't going to work out. I have a note from the doctor that says I shouldn't return to work without having a fever for 24 hours, so what should I tell my club? Cause I know they won't be happy, and I don't want to be fired. Thanks to all who are answering!

well, i avoid clubs that want to fine me for things. motherfuckers will not get an extra dollar out of me. i recently got hired at a club that had a $250 no-show/late/sick day policy. i laughed out loud when the manager told me this, packed my shit and left.

like hell i'm going to give you 250 for not showing up when i'm a freelancer. no sir. i don't have time for that bullshit.

Ok, don't smite me for this, but I used to keep a reserve of doctor's notes. Just take an existing prescription that dr. has written to you on their stationary pad, white out the existing date and instructions on it, copy it, and cut it to size. The club won't know the doctor's handwriting. This does constitute as fraud though, so be careful.

I've never worked at a club that required doctor's note, nor should they if you are a contractor. But, it works.

I have danced at a few clubs with similar policies. It is just to cut down on flakiness of dancers - and yes, the ones like you who are really sick ending up, literally, having to pay for it.

I can see why they do it, however it is annoying. As a matter of fact I had to call in tonight (a legit reason too) and also got slapped with a fine. I'll pay it because I love my club, but it's annoying.

ETA: Some clubs won't accept doctors notes anymore because of the reason above - girls faking them. Not blaming it on anyone of course, however my club for instance refuses them. If you cannot make it to work, you pay your fine (unless it is a severe emergency/life threatening of course).

250???!!!??!! thats fuckin ridiculous! what club was this? if you dont mind my asking.

ive worked at clubs where if you miss work and dont make up a day or bring a note, you still have to pay the house fee. not too unreasonable. but they dont immediately demand notes... they have all been reasonable to me since i was a reliable dancer.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

That's ridiculous. You are an independent contractor. There are fees like "no call/no show" to be sure they have enough staff on hand each night. But $250 and you called ahead of time to let them know? That's ridiculous.
Unless you make craaaaazy money I'd find a club more flexible. The reason we are our OWN boss is b/c of shit like that!

BULLSHIT. My club will fine you for no call/no shows if you are scheduled and you don't show up. If you constantly have a story and are calling in to say you cannot work, they won't take you as credible at my club and tell you to fuck off when you do need to call off, but they only do that to girls who call off a lot or don't show up a lot. But if a girl is reliable they will not make her pay a fine or require a Dr. note if she only calls off, say, a couple times a year. I will not work for a club that gives you absolutely zero breaks for calling off. Nobody is going to go the Dr. for every bad cold, flu, and upset belly. Thats ridiculous, everyone is entitled to a few sick days without some sort of 'proof' you were sick.

I don't know, I'm in Ohio and I've never dealt with that kind of bullshit. I've been to the Vanity before, but I've never worked there.

Big clubs with tons of girls don't generally have this type of strict policy but small clubs do. They have to have a certain amount of of girls in order to run the club, you know keep the customers coming back and actually getting customers in the door. If no girls show up they have no club so thus the fines. In general, dancers really are flaky believe it or not and they will show up if they know they will be fined for not.

Alot of regular jobs dont have sick days anymore, here's how i handled the situation with those kinds of jobs:as long as u can drive without wrecking the car, go in. generally any manager who sees an employee throwing up/visibly ill, is going to send that person home because they dont want to catch whatever u have (esp with the swine flue going around these days).

plus if the house fee is less than the fine, at least you won't be out as much money and they see u are reliable even when under the weather.

I still think its bullshit. Right now, most employers, and even universities, are giving anyone a pass who might be sick, due to the Swine Flu. Its just another way for the clubs to make money off of girls.

I've never worked at a club that fined its girls for calling in sick, and I don't think I ever would.

i have worked at small clubs where you were responsible for finding another dancer to cover your shift if you couldn't work, i would have rather paid a fine than some of the phone calls i had to make...

Not to thread jack at all, but I second that I have had real jobs and never ever had a sick day.

Not to say I always had to have an excuse but I get fired after about three legitimate calls. People are desperate to work for shit. People i've worked with come in puking in their garbage can.

Even the time I had one I got fired and I don't even know how I could have proven it to the great labor gods.

I still think that's BS for a first time call.

I wouldn't be going for this. I'm assuming you are an independent contractor? Call the labour board. There's no reason that you should need to go to a doctor and have to pay a co-pay or full amount PLUS have to worry about the house fee for a day that you didn't work.
