    Default Card Theft

Someone used my bank card to order $400 in clothes from some website in Germany. I called the bank and the lady was not too helpful. She said they are cancelling my card and issuing a new one. The things is, this happened a couple of months ago with another unauthorized charge for $50. They just issued me another card. Someone told me that they start with small charges and then move to bigger ones until they clean you out. Is this true? I really just want to close my acct. all together. I don't feel safe anymore. I checked my credit report and it seems nothing else has gone wrong...yet. What do I do? What can I do? Anyone have any advice or knowledge what I can do to stop this and protect myself?

If the bank is not being helpful I would just find another bank. I rather have to goto another location than have my account cleaned out.

You need to report these transactions as fraud on your account. Under Regulation E you have the right to dispute any electronic transaction for any reason. Under Regulation E when you dispute an electronic transaction they have to investigate it. The process can take up to 90 days. Some banks will issue a credit for the disputed amount until the investigation is over. They are not required to do so.

I would call back or go to a branch and demand to speak to a manager about this situation. Not only are they not following federal laws but they are not properly monitoring your card for unusal activity.

Each time they reissue the card in these cases the card number should be different from the previous number. If they are changing the number each time and you are still getting fraudulent transactions something else is going on. Either where you use your card regularly is stealing the number or someone you know.

    I hope this helped.

^^^^This is what creeps me out. I cannot say for sure the two incidences are related, but it doesn't matter. It's creepy enough and seems the incidences are too closely related. My account has been stolen from twice in 2 months. How they are getting the information is beyond me. I am certain this is internet theft, because my card has never been out of my posession. And now I am thinking it is someone in Europe, since they bought clothes in Germany. Most likely a female. I checked the website they ordered from and it says they had to sign for delivery. So who signed for it? I have never been in Germany.

I want to close my acct. and go back to dealing with prepaid credit cards only.

Did you enter both card numbers on the internet? If so my guess is your computer has been hacked and someone has remote access to it.

What anti virus do you use and is it up to date? Do you have a firewall for both incoming and out going access?

Yes I have used both cards on the net. I'm going to sound stupid, but I don't really know what a firewall is, and I have Norton, but no, it's not up to date.

I would recommend ZoneAlarm Extreme Security. You will have to uninstall Norton. They offer a free 30 day trial so you can scan your computer.

They also offer a free firewall, a firewall keeps things from comming into or out of your computer unless you want it to.

My guess is someone has gained remote access to your computer.

I am installing the software now. But come to think of it, I am not so sure it would be remote access. I have another credit card that has never been messed with that has been used online, so I am thinking it must be a website I use, maybe where I pay a bill with that bank card every month. Hmmm...

More importantly, a firewall that identifies the programs trying to reach outside your computer.

Let us know what you find after doing a deep scan of your computer.

Hmmm...well according to the scan, there is nothing wrong. It said 0 infections.

So going back to what I was thinking. I have another credit card that I have used online that has never had problems. In fact I have had that card for many years. Sooo, I am not sure about the theory of remote access to my computer. I am thinking it has more to do with access to my banking information or maybe where I pay a bill with my bank card every month.

    Or that guy...Any thoughts?

Anyway, I took the money out of my acct today and only left enough for my car payment.

Well unless it is a root kit virus you computer is good. I do find it odd that you had zero infections as almost everyone has a funny cookie or two unless you clear all cookies when you close the browser. Did you do the ultra deep scan?

Does that guy have friends in Germany? That company will have a record of the IP address the goods were ordered from but getting them to cooperate may be a problem.

Do you have Limewire on your computer? Im asking because I was watching a show yesterday about people who share files on limewire can be robbed silly from hackers getting into your computer and finding valuable information to steal your identity. Here are a few links on some cases:

Hope this helps. Also if you wanna keep Limewire on your pc, just change your settings so you can receive files but not share them

    No I don't have limewire.

I did some research and apparently the bank doesn't have to do jack shit about this because it is a debit card, not a credit card. This is why they just keep issuing me a new one and not giving a rat's ass. I advise everyone to stop using debit cards.

For those who don't have the option, have a separate bank account with just the right balance.

More and more I am going cash myself, as the banks, who at one time were to protect your money, seem hell bent on doing nothing for the customer these days.

It is entirely possible that the info was stolen from a live person you gave the card to make a purchase. It they have a webcam attached to their computer, photographing the card on the fly is a cinch. I've noticed that my Dr.s office, salon, veterinarian, and auto repair shop all have computers with web cams and are all places that I use my credit cards. (they all happen to have my personal info on file like phone number and address, too)

Your best bet is to check you balances online daily. You should have protection on your credit cards of at least $1500 against fraud. Debit cards are a little less regulated, so if you must use a debit card, try to get it insured against theft through your bank or credit union.

When you see something fishy, call your bank right away. I once spoiled my own b-day present one time doing this, but I thought someone had stolen my card and shopped online. Turns out my husband ordered flowers for my birthday as a surprise. He was disappointed that I was so nosy, but glad I was watching our account for fraud, too.
