    Default super dry lips

God, I cannot fix this for the life of me.

Nothing seems to work. They are always peeling with like gross looking big chunks of skin.

I keep relatively hydrated, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

    Please help me. Please.

I won't have any lips left soon.

try using cocoa butter or coconut oil. They work for me. Chapsticks & carmex just make it worse if its a real problem. The wax in them dries you out more.

When you are using your facial care products (toner, moisturizer, etc.), make sure to use them on your lips. THEN put a lip balm on a few times a day.

That seems to work for me.

    Thanks for the replies.

I was wondering about the chapstick. Actually I use a Burt's Bees and I have for about five years.

I swear it does make it worse, but I look like a leper so I always whip it out in public.

So the wax dries out your lips? Hmmm. That might explain why my boyfriend from couple years ago had the same thing - I thought it was contagious for a while.

I just switched to a new face lotion, so I'll try that too.

I used to use Burt's Bees too, but it just didn't work as well as some of the others. I use CO Bigelow (Bath and Body Works brand) now, My Favorite Lip Balm, and it works well. It contains shea butter, sweet almond oil, and wheatgerm oil, in a petroleum base. Best thing I've found thus far.

I put face moisturizer on my lips too right after I exfoliate them with a wash cloth. As much as I love burts bees stuff, if you have a serious problem, the bees wax is going to make it worse. My favorite is cocoa butter sticks from queen helene; its like 1.50 at cvs. Its 100% cocoa butter, it takes a second, but it really works. Plus, they are small enough to put in a purse. Another plus, is that it smells absolutely divine.

I am on accutane, which dries out lips horribly. My derm gave me some small sample tubes of Aquaphor. It is a little gooey like lip gloss, but works extremely well. Now my lips only peel if I fail to use it regularly.

For me, Burt's Bees or any other waxy chapstick doesn't help at all!

Vaseline. Buy a little tub and keep it next to the bed. My lips used to crack like crazy back in the cold canadian winters. I've been using it since I was about 10. Still do now even though I never get dry lips now. Super cheap too

Vaseline doesnt help to heal dry lips it just acts as a sort of barrier.

^ sorry you are right. It won't heal them but it will seal them, locking in moisture and preventing future cracking. As I said, I never get dry lips now but I use it everyday. If I use chapstick or a lip gloss... they will start to crack.

Be careful about what you put on your lips! It really needs to be a product for lips since you will wind up ingesting some of it. 100% cocoa butter or coconut oil or other "food" oil should be fine as long as it really is 100% and doesn't have fragrance or anything else. I agree, Chapstick and the like is really AWFUL for lips. Anything that has menthol or any other ingredient that makes your lips/skin tingle is a sign that it's causing irritation. Even if it does say "medicated" on it ... that stuff is badbadbad.

I get dry lips in the winter and I use . I've been using it for years and it's great. It has a consistency similar to Vaseline, but less thick/gloopy/sticky. It DOES have peppermint in it, and I wish it didn't, but it's proven mild enough on my lips. I typically put it on when I go to bed, but you can wear it during the day, too.

There's also a Mary Kay lip product that some people swear by, but I've never used it.

My esthetician had me put Aquaphor (and ONLY Aquaphor) on my face and lips during the downtime days after my chemical peels. It protects and feels like Vaseline, but is a little lighter and water based. I tried to use it later on my lips and feet at night, but didn't really notice a difference. I've always heard crazy good things about Aquaphor too.... I wish it would've worked for me.

I love CO Bigelow rose salve:

It does have petrolatum (vaseline) in it, but it's also got lanolin oil and rose extract. I feel like it helps my lips heal faster when I've let them go for too long, and they get cracked. I put it on my nose once, when had a cold and my nose got all chapped and dry from all the tissues I was going through, and overnight the bits of dry skin came off and the irritation went away.

Another solution with lanolin, and this might sound odd, but you could try a nipple balm (for nursing mothers, when their nipples get chapped) like Medela PureLan. It's pure lanolin, and the directions say you don't have to remove it before nursing, so I figure if it's safe for babies to have in their mouths it's safe to put on your lips. I used it on my lips when I was nursing my kids, and I remember it being kind of thick and gooey but it made my lips so soft!

I want to mention that it is possible to be allergic to lanolin, so apply some to a smaller patch of skin first to see if you have a reaction before slathering it all over your mouth.

I agree with Jessie_tinydancer, nothing works better for your lips than Vaseline.

I've always had superdry lips. I've got a big natural pout so when I was younger it always looked really gross when I'd pick the dry skin off, they were cracking and bleeding constantly. I never found any solution in any lip balms, they only made it worse, vaseline is the only thing that helps the natural healing process but doesn't prevent dryness. I figured, since skin on lips is sort of delicate and sensitive, like around your eyes, I started using any moisturiser that I use around my eyes. Some of them feel really odd on the lips but always when I find one that works on both the eyes and lips I stick to it. I prefer ones with sunblock in them and it's tricky to find one of those that work on both areas in daily use. I noticed that product price or brand name doesn't even count. Currently I'm using Kanebo and Nivea. Which both work.

i use kiehls lip balm #1 and wont use anything else. everytime i use regular chapstick or lip balm they feel dry afterward but with kiehls they feel moisturized, without a glossy look and really smooth. i put a lot on before i go to bed and the next day theyre not dry or cracked. i also use la roche posay (sp) as a moisturizer and put that on my lips...you can get it a cvs now but it used to be exclusive to dermatologists now and its a hugely popular line in france. kiehls products are expensive but the lip balm is only 5 dollars and it lasts a surprisingly long time.
