Angry They think I stole something!

This is going to be a little long...so I apologize.

Here's how it starts. I went into work a few weeks ago and I noticed another dancer wearing my gown (we can leave our gowns at the club on a rack provided in the dressing room). I didn't say anything at first, but after noticing the strap was coming off in the same spot, I realized it was mine.

At the end of the night, I asked her (let's call her Kay) for my dress back. She was confused because another girl (let's call her Belle) gave her that dress. But I got it back after convincing her it was mine.

Belle only dances once every few months because she moved out of state permanently. She came back last week when I wasn't working and probably asked Kay for "her" dress, because the manager approached me and said that I had Belle's dress. I assured him that it was mine, but he didn't seem to believe me.

I'm not sure how to handle this. The lame part is that Kay is dating the DJ and seems to be a shit-starter. I don't want to be harassed about something I never took, and I don't want to lose my temper.
No one believes me that I didn't steal ANYTHING! I still have the receipt from when I bought the dess! And it IS possible that Belle misplaced her dress while she was moving out of state.

Has anyone else dealt with something like this?

Bring in your receipt and show it to the manager. Explain that your dress was wearing on the strap, and that's how you know this dress is yours and not an identical one that belonged to Belle. Tell him that you are not doubting Belle's sincerity, and you believe that she has the same dress, but that you are confident that this one belongs to you.

Beyond that, there is nothing you can do.

They probably already believe you, as much as they can when two girls claim the same item. If they honestly believe you stole another dancer's dress, you would have already lost your job. This confirms their belief that you were telling the truth and own that dress.

Aww something similar happened to me when I was very new. One of the more experienced girls had taken me under her wing for a few weeks and one night we had done a 2-girl dance just before closing. She left the couch dance room to walk the custie to the ATM, and asked me to watch her purse. For whatever lame reason I was tired and it didn't really register with me to grab it. (She had hidden it behind the couch) 5 minutes later she comes back and the purse is GONE. To this day I have no idea how it happened, I was standing right next to the couch the whole time and there wasn't much traffic in the room. We even reviewed the camera footage and didn't see anyone walk by the couch. The poor girl lost $600! And the worst part is that she brought him back with extra cash to spend one-on-one time with me.

The dancer this happened to did not blame me and neither did the bouncer in the room since I was standing next to him the whole time, but it definitely made me look shady to the rest of the senior girls. I was practically in tears when it happened because I felt so bad, and made a point of giving her a $100 bill in front of everyone and telling her how sorry I was, but I still got some dirty looks in the DR for a while. I even got bitched out in front of everyone several weeks later by her MOM (who comes in to do massage every couple weeks), who refused to believe me and called me greedy and a thief. The strange thing is that the girl in question consistently believed I was innocent and said she had no hard feelings. I guess Mommy was having a bad night and needed to take it out on someone.

ANYWAY, I feel your pain, it sucks to have an undeserved reputation for stealing. I would agree that your best bet is to bring in the receipt and explain that yours has a loose strap. You mentioned that people can leave their gowns on a rack, is there any possibility that Belle's is there too?

I think it's most important to clear your name with management. Girls will think what they want and eventually it should blow over.

ETA: What exactly are the rules at your club about dancers wearing each other's gowns without permission? It kind of rubs me the wrong way that Kay took the gown without asking anyone first, regardless of who she thought it belonged to. I know I would be pretty peeved if that happened to me.

^^ it seems like "Belle", who thought it was her dress..lent it to "Kay"

Honestly...I wouldnt leave your stuff there anymore. Just to avoid this kind of drama.

Something like this happened to me too. I was working at a VERY tiny club with a dressing room the size of a public bathroom. I had the exact same car keys as one of the girls (she drove a Beetle I drive a Jetta). Her car key was on the ground by my bag even though hers was on the other side of the room. My friend pointed it out to me because she thought it was mine and so I grabbed it.

At the end of the night someone stole another girls purse and someone found it in the bathroom but all the money was taken out... the manage went on a rampage trying to find out who stole the money (not sure why...) The girl who's keys I had mistakenly taken was freaking out when I got in the room because she couldnt find it, and I went through my bag and found the key and asked if it was hers. She started screaming at me about stealing her keys and I told her it was on the floor by my bag, and my friend backed me up but she didn't believe me. Then she told the girl and my manager that I had stolen her keys and so I had probably stolen the money too.

My manager went through my wallet and was accusing me of stealing and I told him I hadn't stolen the money or her keys and what had happened... he refused to listen to me and told me I was lying.

I just ignored it and came back to work, and after a couple days everything was fine. My name got cleared because all the money I had had on me wasn't the same bills as she'd had (I had a fifty and some tens and ones, hers were all 20s) and my manager ended up apologizing to me.... the girls never really got over it but honestly I don't know what the fuck she thought I was going to do exactly, leave my more expenisive car there and drive off with hers?

But my advice is just ignore it and it'll blow over. If you know you're telling the truth it will come out.
