Crossfingers Swine flu vaccine....has anyone got it?

I'm scheduled to get it this afternoon. I never get the seasonal flu shot but lately I've been hearing so many people my age, yound and healthy, falling prey to this flu and how bad it really is. I thought it was just like the regular flu virus and all the hooha was just people panicking. Apparently it is that bad.

Of course I don't want to be sick or end up in the hospital but whats more I have two jobs (other than dancing I bartend) and if I don't work, I don't make money and then the bills don't get paid and.... it's a snowball effect.

I am nervous about it though. I've heard of people getting a little sick, achey, from the seasonal flu shot I'm afraid to ask what side effect I may succum to.

Has anyone gotten vaccinated? Are you glad you did? Did you experiance any side effects?

I got both shots and have had no ill effects. The seasonal one gave me a sore arm and the H1N1 was the nasal spray - all it did was give me a bad taste in the back of my throat.

I always get the seasonal shot and debated on the H1N1. I work in healthcare so I decided to get it. I also have two jobs and a two year old so the flu is the absolute last thing I need! Personally I am now glad I got it!

In all reality, H1N1 is flu. People die of influenza every year. I won't debate the whole 'swine flu' epidemic because that is such an old, tired conversation.

My son also got both shots as have all of the kids/health care workers in my family - none had any side effects whatsoever.

My Dad had it last week and he got cold/flu type effects for 24 hours, but he has a compromised immune system anyway so it was likely to affect him more. Lots of under-5's i know are having it now and are having no negative effects. (I work with kids day job so i was stressed about whether to have the vaccine to as many were off with actual swine flu when the pandemic actually hit)

GO get it girls! I'm fairly certain I had swine flu this year since like half of freaking Australia had it (may or may not be an exaggeration), but anyways it was hell! I seriously couldn't get out of bed for a week! Worst aches and pains, headache, flu symptoms ever! I also thought about my dad at the time. He was at home in Canada and very very sick. Had I been anywhere near him I probably would have killed him! Think about those people you could give it to and what the consequences could be.

Have any of you ladies heard about that Cheerleader who is now disabled as a result of the flu shot? They're calling her condition "Dystonia."

Apparently this site has ongoing information about her and her condition. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for her condition. I'm aware that there's a "one in a million chance" that this could happen to someone else, but I think everyone should be aware of this tragic story.

I was vaccinated 1976 and at that time it was stopped because of Guillain-Barre syndrome and other problems.

1976: Fear of a great plague.
On the cold afternoon of February 5, 1976, an Army recruit told his drill instructor at Fort Dix that he felt tired and weak but not sick enough to see military medics or skip a big training hike. Within 24 hours, 19-year-old Pvt. David Lewis of Ashley Falls, Mass., was dead, killed by an influenza not seen since the plague of 1918-19, which took 500,000 American lives and 20 million worldwide.

The ominous name of the flu alone was enough to touch off civilian fear of an epidemic. And government doctors knew from tests hastily conducted at Dix after Lewis' death that 500 soldiers had caught swine flu without falling ill.

This time there doesn't appear to be a great problem with getting the vaccine. I do not fall into a group that qualifies for the vaccine according to my physician and she was very emphatic about that.

As happened in 1976 this particular flu can give one almost no symptoms or be fatal within days.

more people have died from the regular flu than the bird flu or the swine flu. Its only because its new that there is so much media scare. The media loves to cause mass panic. And the medical industry makes a KILLING off the mass hysteria.

Did you notice the bird flu made a big scare, then died down? and now here is the swine flu. It will make a big mass hysteria, people will panic and soon, it will too die down until another virus can be made the new media obsession.

I heard about that - that was from the seasonal shot though (I think). Such a rare side effect - it is sad....but with all injections/meds/procedures there is the potential for side effects, from mild to life-threatening. People just need to make the best decision for themselves and their families.

I'm an advocate for all flu shots. I'm not worried about dying myself. I'm worried about the little old lady or the baby I give the flu to and end up killing them. We young healthy people have nothing to worry about, but I'm sure the person sitting next to us on the bus who is undergoing cancer treatment would appreciate not catching our flu.

LOL who told you that? Um yes older people have SOME immunity to all cold and flu viruses because they are old and therefore already been exposed to most things. But older people are also more likely to have other health issues and which means if they DO catch it then they are more at risk of complications. Sorry let me clarify - I'm not talking about killing 70 year old Betty who walks 5kms a day and eats lean chicken and veggies for dinner washed down with milk and a multi-v. I'm talking about my 70 year old grandmother who has emphysema, is over weight and high blood pressure.

I'm not saying people should freak out or we are all gonna die. Seriously this whole swine flu thing was huge here in Australia months ago and is over and done now. I'm just saying if people have the option to take precautions for their health and the health of others, why wouldn't you?

My physician said there was a flu similar to swine flu that older people were exposed to that is why the vaccine is counter indicated in that group.

I ride the Number 7 Train out to Queens so I'm immune to everything.

I'd retire first. It's the most hectic, nerve-racking city. Imagine having to take the 7 Train to the ballpark looking like you're riding through Beirut next to some kid with purple hair, next to some queer with AIDS, right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time, right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It's depressing... The biggest thing I don't like about New York are the foreigners. You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country?

Yeh, its something to do with a flu that was around years and years ago so old people are more likely to be immune to this string of flu because they had already been exposed to it/similar type when they were young.

Swine flu belongs to the so called H1N1 strain. It is genetically very similar to the 'Spanish flu' that caused between 30 - 50 million deaths in 1918 - 1920. The concern is that new variants of the H1N1 strain will be similarly lethal.

However, what many studies do not take into account is that the 1918 - 1920 epidemic took place in the aftermath of the First World War when many of those that died were malnourished.

The central powers, for example Germany, were subject to a Royal Navy blockage that had cut off the fertilizers that were necessary to make German farms productive. Food yields were down between 30 - 50% and the bulk of the German population was suffering from near-starvation. In those circumstances, the mortality rate from flu was far higher that it would be in a healthy population.

Ditto, the British population had been subjected to severe rationing for several years, there was a civil war going on in Russia which impacted on food production, etc.

I suspect if swine flue (or a variant) does become more dangerous, it would be the third world countries - with their inferior nutrition levels and medical services - that would unfortunately suffer the high mortality rates.

No. I am against all vaccinations. But, to each their own.

    How about the CDC?
Adults 65 years and older are not at high risk of getting H1N1 (Swine) flu. They are not in the initial target groups for vaccination, but may get vaccinated when supplies become available.

That flu killed over 500,000 in the US of A with a normal food supply. As with the swine flu it killed mostly young healthy people.

"Another unusual feature of this pandemic was that it mostly killed young adults, with 99% of pandemic influenza deaths occurring in people under 65, and more than half in young adults 20 to 40 years old"

Not high risk is not synonymous with immune.
