Default To the club or private?

Hi all! I've been thinking about dancing for a while but recently starting giving it some SERIOUS consideration. So while doing some "research" I found this forum and I'm hoping I can get some help from all the ladies on here.

So, I have basically no experience and I'm sort of intimidated by going to one of the clubs here. I was thinking about maybe doing some private shows or bachelor parties to start with so that I wasn't completely "green" when I go to the club.

I know a friend of a friend of a friend who does private work and she said she can get me jobs.

Basically, I guess my question is should I "practice" before going to the club? Is it even worth it to try private shows, or will I earn more at the club anyway, even if I have no idea what I'm doing? I'm a full-time student, so my hours are sort of limited.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any help and thank god for a site like this!!

Doing private parties is very different than working in a club. Doing a few of those first will probably help boost your confidence, which is important, but it won't really teach you what to expect in the clubs. Go visit some clubs you are thinking of working at as a customer. This will give you the best idea of what to expect in terms of dancing, clothing, attitude, type of hustle, pretty much anything you are wondering about. It's understandable to be intimidated, bringing a friend or two helps a lot. Try to remember some of the simpler moves & floorwork you see and start practicing them at home.

I see that you are in Philly-go to South Street and buy a cheap pair of shoes from one of the stripper stores, you can get a pair on sale for $30-$40. They don't have to be amazing or flashy, you should keep your wardrobe simple and practical at first. Wear these heels whenever you're at home to get the hang of moving around in them. It'll hurt at first, but stick with it! It will go a long way towards helping you feel more comfortable during an audition and the first few shifts you work.

Do you have an idea yet of which clubs you're interested in? I can probably give you some info about various local clubs as well as general information about working in Philly.

Hi Lola, thanks so much for the feedback!

I actually have a pair of heels I bought at one of the south street stores for a halloween costume last year. They're not crazy - about 5" - but I think they should be ok for when I finally start working (although, you would know better than me).

As for clubs, I'm not really sure. I've been trying to do some research and from what it seems Cheerleaders and Risque seem the best. But them again, I have no clue what the reality is.

I guess in terms of safety and whatnot I'm thinking of just avoiding the private show thing. I've taken a look on craigslist to see if people are hiring and it seems like most people are looking for things I'm not really interested in doing.

But thanks for the tips. I'm going to try to wear the heels whenever possible to make sure they're "broken in."

Personally Id just go straight into the club, the nerves will wear off and in my experience i learned from watching other girls hustle and dance. If a club is where you want to be then just go for it! Clubs get loads of new girls starting all the time so they wont expect you to be an expert straight off.

This website was completely invaluable to me and still is! Ive not been dancing long and was worried about not having any experience but everyone has to start somewhere Good luck!

I think club work is wayyyyy easier than private parties. Club first for sure!

Well, I actually have a private party (bachelor party) lined up this weekend so I guess I'll have a better idea of things once I've done that. But after reading what most people are writing on here, I think the club is the way to go.

I'm actually going to probably audition at 1 or 2 places in the city in the next few weeks I think.
