    Default Why call yourselves "strippers"?

When did it become OK to refer to entertainers as "strippers"? Women in the profession used to bristle at the term "stripper." They found it demeaning to the craft and full of ugly connotations. Now it seems to be the accepted term. I would never address an entertainer using that word. To me you are "exotic dancers" because that designation befits your beauty and mystery. No matter what you are called, I am ever thankful for what you do and feel deeply privileged that such enticing and beautiful women see fit to perform for me.

Most of us are fine with the term stripper. I don't find it to be an offensive term. I do, in fact, strip. I guess you could say we've taken it back.

I'm with Elvia... we've taken the term back. I used to hate being called a stripper... but then when I got more into burlesque I noticed dancers who were much older than I used the term and really owned it... so now I have no problem using it.

The bigger question is, why does the word stripper have a negative connotation?

It's just a word. It's not what you call them but how you treat them that matters.

To me, entertainer and exotic dancer just sound so pretentious. Sort of like calling the kid that pumps your gas "petroleum distribution specialist". When I call myself a stripper I don't have to hide behind some prettied-up term because I don't see it as something to be ashamed of or feel the need to preserve the feelings of others.

Just be thankful they don't call us "Sex simulators" or "crotch humpers" or something, because quite frankly, when people are really grinding away back there, it's hard to refer to it as "dancing" without cracking a smile.

I like entertainer, because it's pretty darn entertaining, but yeah- Exotic Dancer does sound pretentious. One foreign girl I knew who wasn't a stripper, referred to it as "Strip Dancing" which I really like. Because Stripping implies just taking off clothes, and Dancing implies moving around to a beat. We strip AND dance: Strip Dancing.

Depends on who and how the term is being used.

In New Jersey they are called dancers as they don't strip; show a titty go to jail.

Actually stripper is not a good term for what they do; strippers used to work on a stage with no PL contact and received a salary from the theater.

Lol this reminds me of back in high school, we had a librarian who demanded to be called a "media center specialist" since she found the term librarian to be derogatory. She even would give kids detention if they slipped up!

A lot of people seem to put so much concern into the job titles. For intance now we need to say "flight attendent" instead of "stewardess". Its ridiculous. Regardless of whether you say i am a "stripper", "exotic dancer", "entertainer", or "topless therapist", its all the same at the end of the night when i am naked and counting my money .

Now titles that i dont like: whore, prostitute, slutbag. My job doesnt fall into any of those categories, so that will piss me off!
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

i think its similar to many terms that have been taken back by the people historically called that in a demeaning way. i personally do not like when anyone that is not a stripper calls me a stripper. i don't think they have any clue about what i do and where i work and are lumping it in with what they saw at a frat house one time. or what they've heard. i think there is such a wide variety of strippers.
i've never even gotten naked for money. i used to work in a bikini bar and i didn't strip off any clothes there, so i guess that made me a go-go dancer, although lap dances happened at some clubs i was at, i didn't do them. but now i work topless and do private dances so did i just start stripping? i think many times we entertain the men at my club with a lot more than just being in a thong, so i absolutely call myself an entertainer. my co-workers can call me a stripper, but my hair does stand up when i see guys on this board type that.
    thanks for asking.

Hehe I did this the other day! I was buying some underwear and asked the girl in the shop about sizing (i didnt want to buy a small one that would dig in and cause hip-muffin top) She said ''its ok coz you'd have ur clothes over it anyway!'' I said, ''well, no, im a dancer, it will definetly show and not look nice'' to which she replied ''ooh, u could jut wear baggy dance pants?'' i had to explain that i was a stripper and it was all i was going to be wearing! Her face was a picture, she looked at me like id just kicked a kitten! Bless her! haha!

I dont mind the term stripper, although i probably would use 'dancer' if i was talking about it generally though, it doesnt offend me, i strip, i dance, its all just words!

    LOL!!!!

I think we should make it official. The preferred term is now "topless therapist."

The only time I find it offensive is sometimes when my friends refer to me as "The Stripper". It annoys me because yes, that's one thing I do but I'm also a writer, artist, and many other things. I am not summed up by the word "Stripper". I work webcam so if anything I consider myself more of a cyber escort or adult web entertainer but whatever. People always end up calling it stripping anyway.

If one does not remove clothing stripper really doesn't apply it is called go-go dancing; that is 95% of New Jersey clubs.

When I think of a stripper I think of stage shows with feathers, fans and balls.
