    Default Resume cover letter tips

OK, so I saw an ad for the perfect job for me - Legal Writer for a law firm.

I have research/writing experience and the education they want and they're offering a salary that wouldn't be paycheck to paycheck.

Here's the problem. I feel like my cover letter and resume skills suck butt.

I revamped my resume and letter for a couple of hours tonight, but still feel they aren't totally up to snuff.

Any surefire tips that you use for this kind of stuff or a website you really like that gives advice.

I've looked at a bunch but hope you guys might have one thing that you feel makes a big difference.

Anything is appreciated. I want this bad enough to put in the work, and hey anything you can offer will help in the future if this doesn't work out.

Some tips that come to mind ...

Use a good qaulity paper, professional looking paper. If you don't use bright white, than perhaps a slightly different shade of paper. (Something that will make your resume stand out from the others)

Use a spash of color. Don't just print in black and white. If you have a line across the top of your resume to seperate the header from the body, than make it a color. (Look up the firm's website, and see if they have a corporate color scheme. For example, if it appears their logo is royal blue, try to match it.)

Use "action" words when describing your experiences.

Sounds like you've done some research on the firm. In your cover letter try to relay how you feel you can be an asset to their team and help them reach their goals.

Do you know anyone who works there, or someone else who knows someone there? Networking is one of the best ways to get a leg up on the competition.

    Best of luck!
If you can't win. Make the fellow in front of you break the record.

    No info on firm.

I hope it's not some way to scoop a resume. Could be.

I took a chance and sent it off.

I put a lot of work into everything and hope it works out.

But, knowing my luck with getting any response when applying to jobs lately I'm not exactly holding my breath.

But I'm still having a fantasy of making that much money. 30K. Thought I'd be making way more by now, but it's better than the 18K I'm used to.

I might actually be able to get an apartment, save a little, and pay off some of my 60K in student loan debt. Oh, the fantasy...

Post a link to them and I (along with others I'm sure) will review them.

Cover letter - you're trying to show interest and convince them briefly that they should read your resume - no super-duper marketty crap - and no more than 2 paragraphs

Resume - one page - stick to facts and provide real examples if you can - "saved 20% in costs by...." blah blah blah

Do you have a place you can upload them? Maybe Google Docs?
