Default 2 hour commute; am I crazy?

I'm srsly considering driving 2 hours to work at a club. (That's 2 hours each way, not total.) I could cut down on the driving somewhat by getting a hotel overnight if I work two consecutive nights, and I could record lectures from my classes and listen to them on the looooong drive to make a better use of that time. But I'd still be on the road 8-10 hours a week (2 trips up and back).

I'm worried about putting all that wear and tear on my car. OTOH, I'll only be doing this for a year, and I don't have to do much driving aside from this. (I think if I did start working there, I'd put aside 10% of my earnings in a 'slush fund' for my car, just in case.)

Long story short, the clubs in my home city are uber-dirty. At the far-away club where I'm thinking of working, I know for sure the owner doesn't put up with extras, drugs or anything else that could bring unwanted attention to his club.

Anyone else ever driven so far for work? Why did you do it? Any tips or words of wisdom you can give me would be appreciated!

ya that is a long drive but the hotel idea sounds really good. the recording of lectures sounds like a fabulous idea and should be easy with today's cell phones or still a pretty cheap device. i think you would be better off than most students. i also listen to books and motivational affirmations while sitting in nyc traffic. if the money is right, then its right and you should do it. people have bitch commutes all the time and at least you know this will end. well also how many nights were you planning to work? i'd say if 2-3 then def but prob not more than that.
do you have an older car or something you're worried about? find out if your insurance company offers roadside assistance in case anything happens, or get AAA.
i think you'll be fine babe, good luck!

I drove an hour away because the money was fantastic and I didn't worry I'd see someone I knew. I wasn't the farthest. I once worked at a club where this one girl commuted on weekends. She was from Kentucky I think and worked Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
and left Monday only to repeat Friday. I didn't get that and I think she only did it a few months.

You have to ask yourself is the money good enough to justify it? Also, depending on weather, it could be dangerous (we get heavy winters so I try not to drive that much when it's bad). If the answer is it's worth it, then take some music to keep you busy while driving. If possible find someone you can drive with.

For the past two months i have been living in cleveland part time to go to school and living in pittsburgh part time to go to work. I have a friend who used to go to law school where i go to school who i stay with when i am in pittsburgh. its like a 2 hr 15 min drive.

Going back and forth is hectic. Its hard to keep stuff organized, not gonna lie. And it is tiring so i am less effective at getting stuff done during the day. I have stuff i need to do back in cleveland that reuqires me to function during the day, but instead i am in pittsburgh so i will need to scramble to get it done when i go back to cleveland next. I dont think i would keep up this lifestyle for more than 2 months. Moving myself and my stuff around all of the time is really taxing. Also if you are someone who needs to be in class, it might be even worse. I am a visual learner and i learn much better out of the text book... so i would only go to the attendence mandatory classes and just keep up with the reading and homework on my own. Maybe someone who is naturally more organized than me can do it successfully... its a struggle for me.

i wouldnt make the commute nightly. You are going to fall asleep one night when driving!

Also, i would advise making sure you have a bank account with a bank that expands to both cities. This might seem like a weird thing to mention, but I dont and this caused me to miss a phone bill when autopay failed, not notice because i didnt get the mail and my roommates never passed it on, and then not be able to take care of it soon enough when i finally did because the card i was going to use needed some more money and the stupid bank was 2 hrs away! I was not happy abotu hte additional re-activation charge! So yea, i would pre plan and make sure simple things like this are set up in a way to make your life easier and prevent stupid situations like this.

also be prepared to give up a lot of time spent with your friends. Its down to my last week in cleveland, and i would love to spend a lot of it with the people who mattered to me, but instead i am working in pittsburgh and when i get back to Cleveland it will be the week. So yea, make sure hte club you are traveling to is worth it because the commute does require sacrifices.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

My best friend in Atlanta used to commute every night from Dalton, GA which is like an hour and a half. When I lived in Vero Beach, I'd commute to Sattellite Beach, which was a good hour.

Get a hotel. That drive sucks ass at 2am.

I drive an hour and fifteen each way to work - I work once, maybe twice per week. The drive home completely sucks but I have to as I have a 2 year old at home. However to me it is worth it to be at a club I like, am comfortable in and make good money in. I would rather do the drive then go 15 minutes to a local club that I couldn't stand working at - my morale would be so low it wouldn't be worth it at all!

If it is a club you want to be at go for it - the hotel idea is great too!

Yes indeed! And my best friend and I worked at Pink Pony for around two and a half to three years.

laurcon: great idea about getting AAA; why didn't I think of that? I don't think anything will happen to my car; it is 7 years old, but it's kept in good condition (and it's a Honda, and they run forever if you take care of them). But having AAA would be great just to ease my "what if?" worries.

This, exactly. I'm currently taking a break from working cos walking into work at my last club every night felt like walking into a trap. Drugs and hooking everywhere, drug dealing that wasn't even remotely discreet, thugs in fights every night...the club before that, I left after someone got stabbed. I'd rather drive 2 hours to a clean, safe club than to drive 20 min and be in that environment. You don't realise how badly it drags your spirits down until you get out.

The two hour drive and overnight hotel stay would also greatly increase your AFTER TAX income ... because this renders your mileage and hotel bill as legitimate business expense tax deductions !!

2 hours is a long drive and it does more than ware and tear on ur car its also on ur body and a year is a long time, even 6 months is long enough to regret ur decision. even if the hotel room were $50 a night that $400 a month idk where u live but u could probably find an efficiency for that much. would it be easier and cheaper to move there and take online courses? my advice is try it first for a little while then make ur final decision.

If you really think this club is better and you'll make more $ .... 4 hours of driving doesn't seem like a bad investment for two good work nights to me. For that night that you'll need a hotel, try priceline and hotwire ( bidding ) OR find a hotel close to the club and talk to the manager right away about needing a room once a week. You might get a really good deal by promising a consistent booking once a week.

Agreed! Also, some clubs will pay part or even all of your lodging expenses. Ask them about that as well.
