    Default For those with pets

How do you clean up after them? I mean how do you deal with their waste? If you have cats do you use clay litter or do you use something more environmentally friendly (and healthier for the cat)?

For dog owners, do you use plastic bags to pick up after them? Do they have a special place to potty in your house, like a litter box for dogs?

I was just wondering how everyone else handles this messy business. I've been using a litter box for my kitty. I've always used clay litter, but have recently learned that it is bad for the environment as well as bad for the cat's health. I also use biodegradable baggies to pick up after my dog.

I try to use disposable latex gloves when I clean my rats' cages. The feces and urine isn't safe for me to handle when I'm pregnant. I use Aspen bedding because it is safest for rats' sensitive respiratory systems (when compared to cedar or pine).

My cats use normal clay cat litter, but right now I have others clean the cat box because of the risk of toxoplasmosis.
If you are willing to do for one year what other's won't, you can spend a lifetime doing what other's cant.

I use a recycled litter called Yesterday's News for my rats. It's made out of (you guessed it) recycled newspaper. I'm slightly allergic to their urine and this type of litter helps soak it up. My boyfriend cleans their cage and living area for me because cleaning it can trigger asthmatic responses for me.

My kitty is an indoor cat so she has her litter tray inside.
I use a litter that is sort of little wood pellets, it disintegrates into sawdust when its wet and is a bit more messy(as in sawdust gets on the floor more than the clumping clay litter) but yes, it is meant to be better for the cat.

I have cats and I use clay littler mixed with shredded newspaper in the big pan (it's like, 3 feet long and 2 feet wide).

In the smaller pans (regular Van Ness Jumbo Size) I use scoopable litter. I scoop the poop off the top every day and scoop the urine out every other day. I find that if I do the urine every day, the clumps don't form and they crumble.

I change the huge one every three days. I just put it in the dumpster outside.

I have 5 cats so I have 6 litter pans.

I have noticed that my cats like to poop in 2 of the pans and pee mainly in the big pan. The other pans get used I guess whenever they feel like using them cuz I only gotta scoop those mabye once or twice a week but it's always best to have one pan for each cat PLUS one extra. So I do.

I usually do it myself but also have paid my nieces and nephews and neighborhood kids to do it every single day when I just don't feel like it or when I am sick.

I want to know about that Tidy Cats Breeze system and also about another option for the biggest pan. Cuz the clay dust concerns me. I usually open the window in their litter room for a few hours after I change the biggest pan.

I have a dog. She goes in the courtyard on a little patch of astro turf. We pick up her poopies everyday and through them in the outdoor rubbish bin. We use small doggie poop bags (although I don't think they are bio-degradable, so I will look for some now). We clean the turf with the hose and mild detergent weekly and replace it when it's necessary.

We're blessed with a pooch that will only poop in his own backyard. I'll bet my neighbors are happy about it too (he's a big boy!)

My GF (god bless her), who is a clean freak, picks up his poop almost immediately after he does it. She's so anal about it that one day I expect to find her standing behind him with a pooper scooper poised under his ass to collect it right from the factory.

I'm lame...I just use normal litter for my cat, but would be open to new ideas. What's the theory behind it being unhealthy for them? Chemicals on their paws that they ingest?

Apparently the dust that comes off the clay when the cat is rooting around in the tray is breathed in and can cause respiratory problems(I have noticed my cat dry heaving/coughing in the past and now I've changed to the sawdust litter it seems to have gone).

Also read something about little bits of the clay being ingested when the kitty cleans itself and the clay expanding inside the intestines, and as it is so absorbent it can suck up moisture and cause blockages.

To be honest, it's like anything, you can worry too much I think, I mean how many cats go through life using the clay stuff and are fine, my last cat was an outdoor cat though so I can't say I have any experience of that and want to be on the safe side with my Chloe.

I vary the litter in my cat boxes since my cats are little PIA's and get tired of the same thing after awhile and wont use it.

I walk the dog and pick up his poo in plastic sandwich bags

I clean the bird cages with natural orange cleaner (their respiratory systems are delicate) and use either newspaper or a fluffy cage litter for bird cages on the bottom.

Pooperscoop with cheap scoop bags, either put them in a bin on a walk or usualy in my outdoor bin at home. As there are loads of sign on our walks telling me of the fines I will get for not pooperscooping, yet no bloody bins!!

All of that natural kitty litter smells so awful right away. I use the Fresh Step...and baking soda around the bottom, so the pee litter doesn't stick as easily. I change it when my boyfriend yells at me to change it. For some reason, I can't smell the litter at all. Its in my utility room, and doesn't bother me. So, I scoop it about 3x per week, and completely change it out once or twice a month.

    I have dogs and lizards

The dogs are let out in the back yard. They're trained to only go in one certain area (the rest is for playing only!). Every other day I go out and use trash bags to pick it up. I do have friends who occasionally steal it to use in their compost heaps.

For the lizards, I use natural wood aspen bedding, and use a kitty-litter type scoop to clean the waste out. I love aspen bedding because it smells nice, and clumps easily, which makes cleaning much simpler.

i use corn litter. it clumps easily, it won't make the cats sick eating it (cats that nibble it won't eat enough to really hurt their tummies), and, well, it's just corn.

I tried to buy one. It's not a real product, when I attempt to order from the site, I keep getting error messages. I kind of thought it was a joke, but I figured what the heck?

I use clay litter. My cats, weirdly enough, both had allergic responses to sawdust/paper litters. I've tried EVERYTHING - some of it they just patently refuse to use and they piss on my couch or something.

    Clay litter it is.

Crystal litter for the cats...its easier to find the pieces they track through the house. We used plasic grocery bags when we scoop it.

Backyard for the 10 lb dog who never poops enough for it to matter so I don't pick it up. He always poops on the same side because I trained him that way. We never walk through that part so we let him claim it. When I walk him, I used either poop bags found in dispensers at the park or plastic grocery bags!

I know, none of those are great for the environment. But, at least my grocery bags are recycled!

For my cat I use Pine pellets. It's great scent is what makes it easier for me to clean up his litter box with out the nasty chemical smells. Also he loves it much more.

For Harley Quinn our beagle, she just goes outside and it picked up later in the week. ^_^ Easy Pezzy Lemon Squeezy.

I use Fresh Step crystals for my panther. But he doesn't use it that often, since he is and indoor/outdoor kind of guy. He really prefers the outdoors to the box. But he uses it from time to time. I scoop the poop every time I notice one. It really doesn't smell at all. But he notices, so I make sure he's got a clean box. Even if he doesn't prefer it.

    It makes him feel respected

This is the main reason I got married. My husband takes care of the litter boxes. We use clay litter, unfortunately, I've been looking into litter alternatives, but out here in the sticks where we live, there aren't many options. The closest we can get is allowing the cats to relieve themselves outside in the spring and summer - as long as there are no birds of prey circling above...
