Default let's talk about knee pain

    hello there fellow dancers

my knees have begun to suffer more than any body part has ever suffered, ever. example-i broke my arm once. a few minutes ago i had to climb the stairs and THAT was more painful than when my arm broke.

i'm working on stretching more before i go to work. i also use tiger balm, i apply it after i get home and when i wake up my knees feel a LOT better. however, it's only a temporary relief. i've heard of glucosamine supplements but i'm not sure how much they work.

i've heard that platforms are partly what cause the pain, but i dont know if that means cutting out platforms all together or using lower platforms. for example, instead of an 8 inch shoe with a 4 inch platform, getting a 5 inch shoe with a mini platform (like these- http://www.straponsweetie.com/ankle-...al-p-3159.html)

any one have any tips for relieving pain? any temporary and long lasting tips please

Glucosamine and chondroitin together in a liquid form has helped me more than anything else has--I stopped taking it a couple months ago because it's not in the budget anymore and I feel like my body is falling apart. It made my knees feel better, and my back, and my shoulders (polework), and my ankles.

I've used tiger balm before, too, but it didn't really seem to work for me, even though I loved the way it smelled! It did, however, help my fingers to be less stiff.

I hope yours is mostly the platforms, because that's a simple switch early on--it's difficult for your body to balance weight on your toes at all for hours on end, let alone on a platform. My pain seems to come from the heels in general, because of how much my posture changes, and because of my dancing style (great for my muscles, bad for my joints!).

    Good luck

Flexeril helps my pain, but that's prescribed to me.
If you are willing to do for one year what other's won't, you can spend a lifetime doing what other's cant.

Nature Made Triple-Flex helps me if I take it regularly. I don't know how the store brands of similar products compare, but I'm willing to spend a little extra if it'll keep my joints healthy down the road. I get mine at CVS when it's BOGO or BOGO 1/2 off. The Nature Made Web site usually has coupons, too.

First off, go to the doctor and make sure you don't have fluid in your knees... that can cause a lot of pain. Second, the best trick is to stay off of your knees. I'm not kidding. Study burlesque and when you do get down on the floor don't do a lot on your knees or even squating since both put pressure on your knees. When you go down work on posing rather than the floorwork you are used to. If you MUST be on your knees try to wear knee caps and thigh high boots or leggings that let you slide around easier.

Another thing, use arnica it's a very old trick. You can get it in pill form and as a gel, both from the pharmacy. I use both together and it works wonders.
    Don't you ever sleep?
Not at night...that's when the stars have rather better things to do. They're coming out, shining, that sort of thing.

^^I second this. If you do a lot of floor work, that will not be great for your knees so try to do some other moves.

Also, during your lap dances, are you doing a lot of grinding? When i first started dancing and didnt know any moves, it seemed like 70% of my dance was facing away, squatting, and grinding. And my knees fucking hurt. If you are doing a lot of this then i would advise 2 things:
    1. find a way to give a lap where you dont have to bend your knees a lot while using your legs to hold you up. Focus on doing more moves where your knees are only bent a little instead of 90%.
    2. Do excersises to strenthen your leg muscles. if you have strong quads/hammies/gluts/calves whatever then there will be an all around less strain on your joints. If you do not have strong legs and spend a lot of time squatting, bouncing up and down with knees bent, grinding, whatever, then you are putting a lot of stress on your knees.

    Also, maybe try
So yea, those are easy fixes if it is just from that. However, if you actually have bad knees then that is a separate issue that requires doctor attention.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

Biofreeze, it is heaven on earth. Also heat. Also a lot of it might be muscular. Getting at least a monthly message helps me with my pain immensely. If you have a massage envy around you go there it makes it REALLY affordable. I get knots that push on my cyatic nerve and it makes me want to die. Also cutting down heel size is not going to help. They throw your hips out of alignment and put more pressure on your knees they also shorten your calve muscles. You may also want to see a chiropractor you can get adjustments to your knees and s.t.e.m treatments.

It might be a good idea to wear only flat, supportive shoes when you're not at work. When I stopped wearing heels all the time my knee pain improved.

Do what Kylea said and have your knees checked for fluid. I woke up with "water on the knee" one morning and could not even bend my right knee. I through I had broken my leg because it was so swollen and painful, but it was only fluid beneath the skin.

I've found that taking NSAIDs like aspirin or ibuprofen helps. I've heard several trainers and coaches swear by glucosamine and chondroitin.

Also I read somewhere that Tai Chi is great for knee pain. Not sure why but they said over a long term period it really helps.

That actually makes sense, because Tai Chi would teach your body how to properly align itself, and strengthen the muscles so they could hold themselves the right way. And the pain caused by dancing is due to the heels throwing your whole body out of alignment.

Really? This is good to know. I used to take glucosamine chondroitin supplements but they didn't seem to help. I will definitely have to try the liquid form.
