    Default Cheat Days/Weeks whatever

Its that time of the month again and I have cravings soooooo bad! I just ate a 1/3 of a family sized bags of Lay's chips and passed out sleep for 2 hours. I don't feel like moving no less working out. And if I find somebody holding chocolate they have the option to give it to me or get their arm ripped off! Is it okay to have a weekend or so off from being healthy? Do you do it?

Personally I'm of the belief that as long as you eat healthy and balanced, it doesn't matter if you have an off day, and it's totally cool to treat yourself or give yourself a break. If you keep ignoring any cravings you have because you don't want to break your diet, you're gonna end up binging and that'll hurt you worse than a day or two of slacking off.

    Indulge, don't binge!

Most of the diet/workout books that I've read recommend having at least a "cheat" meal (a day is fine too) so that your body doesn't think its starving and slow your metabolism down. Also, a day off from working out once a week lets all your muscles and joints recover a little.

Actually having a cheat day is a good thing, not only for venting some of your dietary urges, but it also serves the purpose of spiking your calorie intake so your metabolism doesn't get lazy. One key to weight loss is to not have the same calorie intake every day. Your body will get used to the caloric intake and basically adjust itself to it. If you change up your calories every day (obviously keeping the average weekly intake at a level conducive to your goals), you will keep your metabolism on its toes.

That being said, caloric intake is only one factor to consider in your daily nutrient ratios, but a pro like Will is in a much better situation to educate on this issue than myself.

I'm a firm believer in cheat days and mine are Wednesdays and Sundays. I'm a long distance runner and every other day really watch closely what I eat with the majority of my food consisting on lean meats and vegetables. Like someone else mentioned however, sometimes cheat days can turn into binge sessions if you aren't careful.

If a person is trying to lose weight, I'm not sure cheat days are a good idea. If you are happy where you are and simply want to allow for some indulgence in an otherwise clean diet, a cheat day here and there probably is okay. I do Body For Life by Bill Phillips and he recommends a cheat day, although just one a week.
