    Default someone bit my boyfriend

My boyfriend got into a fight tonight and the other guy bit him (breaking the skin) and also scratched him. He has recently had a tetanus injection when he cut his foot on glass.

How likely is it to catch hepatitis or HIV from being bitten?

I don't think I want to risk sleeping with him until he has been tested which apparently he can't be for a few months.

The guy who bit him is apparently a heroin addict too which further concerns me..

He CAN be tested, but to know for sure if he caught something, it takes a few months for the real problem to show up on test results.

Is it very likely to catch something from a bite? At first the skin was slightly cut but then when he was washing it it opened up more and bled. He said he pulled his hand away so it was more of a graze rather than actual bite.

I took him to hospital emergency and asked if they can give him anti-viral medication but apparently not? they said he should go to doctor tomorrow (its 4am here) and get anti biotics.

Thank-you for posting that link. It says that HIV transmission would be very rare but hepatitus is def possible.

It seems the main concern is a bacterial infection.

What a filthy bastard biting. This guy started the fight and because my boyfriend is much larger than him and he was loosing he bit and scratched.

I think it's a good idea to wait. Have you gotten a hepatitis vaccine? I think it would be a good idea to ask a doctor what the risks are, if you haven't done so already.

    From:

Can I become infected from HIV through biting?

Infection with HIV in this way is unusual. There have only been a couple of documented cases of HIV transmission resulting from biting. In these particular cases, severe tissue tearing and damage were reported in addition to the presence of blood.

Lidocaine (numbs) then hydrogen peroxide (disinfects) and a bristle brush. Human bites carry a lot of bacteria. Scrub hard and if it bleeds all the better. Keep it wet with anti bacterial ointment but leave it open so It can drain. Wash daily the same way.

If this was the US I would say some of the anti virals are available at the livestock section of Tractor Supply or Big R. I don't know if they sell livestock grade medicines OTC in Ausland.

I have not been vaccinated against hepatitis. I plan to now. It's a good idea if it's preventable.

I'm going to make him go for a blood test. The wound is pretty minor and today it has completely healed over and doesn't look infected in any way.

Apparently a human bite is worse than a dog bite in terms of bacteria.

The chances of transfer of Hepatitis or HIV through saliva is extremely small unless the biter had some type of bleeding in his own mouth, and his blood was in his saliva. So unless your boyfriend pounded this guys mouth in prior to getting bitten, I think he's going to be fine.

There's no vaccine for Hep C, but Hep C is more associated with blood to blood transfer. There is a vaccine for Hep B, so it might not hurt for him to go ahead and get vaccinated for Hep B now to load him up with Hep B antibodies. Most people will develop immunity to Hep B by themselves without a vaccine if they are exposed to it. HIV would also be in the blood to blood category. Go ahead and have him checked out in a month, but don't sweat in in the meantime. Just my 2 cents.

Tell him to get tested in 3 months. After that time frame, HIV tests should be 99% accurate.
However, the chances that he got HIV are very small. HIV infection rate in Australia is a fraction of 1%. It's not like the bite occurred in Zimbabwe. Then, the mode of transmission itself is also unlikely.
