Default Justifying my occupation to me?!

Ok this is really starting to tick me off.

When I tell people I'm a dancer, I invariably get:

"It's ok, gotta pay the bills somehow right?"

    Or some variation thereof.

I find it condescending and rude, almost like they are patting me on the back and saying "it's ok you dumpster dive, gotta eat somehow, right?"

Anyone else get this response and find it really shitty? I mean WTF.

Yes, also annoying when it comes from custies in the club. I always want to say, "I actually love my job......flexible hours, I work whatever days I want, and I often make over $100 an hour." And then tell them how bad I feel for them having to get up early every morning and go to a job they probably despise. Lol.

But, these people probably just don't know what to say, and I don't think that they are usually being judgemental, just slightly oblivious and ignorant.

Yeah, customers aren't often very bright or understanding. Some are rude. Some are drunk. Some simply are having diarhea of the mouth and think they mean well.

I would rather get the, "Well you gotta pay bills somehow.". Usually I get, "Why??!!! You have so much potential. You are too smart and nice for that./You're not slutty enough for that!"

I do agree that it is rude that they are saying that. Kind of like when they ask, "What do you do besides this?" As if this is just a hobby.

Yup, all the fucking time. And I look right at them and in the same tone of voice and a deadpan expression I say "Nope, I really just love taking my clothes off." And walk away. It's not worth my time to try and explain it to them and they're usually too ignorant to get it anyway.

Lol. Actually I think I have loved this job more than any other job I've had. I should just start responding like that.

^^^ That's what I do. I remind them how crummy it is to sit in an office all day gorging myself with hostess cupcakes and coca cola because I can't stand the work or 75% of the co-workers. Yes, dancing is a lot better. Most of the time if I don't like someone I can just walk away.

Yep. I had one friend who wouldn't let it go and went online, searching for jobs I could apply for. I don't know why it's so hard for people to comprehend some strippers DID pick their job and do like it, we aren't all just doing this because we cant do anything else and we don't hate it.

I just giggle and play dumb, and take their money. As far as I'm concerned, they can say whatever they want, their money spends exactly the same. If its a friend or family member, I doubt they would say anything to me.

why a customer or anyone else for that matter asks me "why?" I just ask them a question in return...

"why do you do your job?"

that generally gets the point across. I do it for the money (ok, i also like not having a schedule), but seriously, i am only in it for money (i dont enjoy it), so pointing out them that it is a job just like theirs is and we both go for the same reason, seems to shut them up.

Often the reply I then get is "ah, good point"

You know, this is a common problem we strippers share... It bothers me too. Dancing is a legitimate job. It's not like selling drugs or robbing houses. I know people in the finance industry that do a whole lot more harm to the general public than I do as a stripper. In fact, I don't think I harm society or anyone at all. Isn't that a Buddhist principle? Above all, do no harm?

I guess they're right. Gotta pay the bills somehow, but I'd rather be a dancer than a financial leech . Or an unappreciated drone at a corporation. Or a low-life attorney defending criminals, or a used car salesman ripping people off of their hard earned money. I have no problem with what I do.

Anyway, I think when people say, "Well gotta pay the bills somehow" they are trying to show acceptance while deep down inside they feel judgemental... if you want to make a point you could politely ask them what they do, and when they tell you respond, "Well, gotta pay the bills somehow!" but I would just let it go. Chalk it up to ignorance or, "everybody's entitled to their own opinion." They're the one with the problem, not you.

Now my question is, why isn't everyone hating on Miley Cyrus for pole dancing and wearing slutty clothes while performing for her tween-aged fans? I don't care, but I might if I had an 8 year old daughter that watched her show on the Disney channel every day I might.

I just ask them if they want to be my money slave. Their alarm clock goes off every morning for the sole purpose of spending their hard earned money on my ass.

I'm telling you guys buy dances from the feisty ones.

It's two totally different mindsets at play. Entrepreneur v. wage slave. Sorry had to say it. I'm not any better than a wage slave. For the reasons mentioned by other so far - compared to soul sucking work in a cubicle I'll opt for being naked three days a weeks.

I got tired of getting fired at all my other jobs when I got naked, rubbed my tits in people's faces, played with my pussy and then asked for a tip

There are many stereotypes about the industry that I work in. Sometimes they can be true but human beings are very diverse creatures and cannot be pigeon-holed into one category.

Some of the most effortlessly beautiful, kind, intelligent, successful, motivated, driven and ridiculously hilarious women that I have ever met have been dancers. I've met the best friends that I've ever had in this industry.

I always play it off and say "I just love being naked...was going to be a nudist but it doesn't pay as well."

    Good one! Hahahaha.

To the OP: I totally understand though. My SO gives me a hard time about it. He has never said I had to quit or anything, but still feels the need to gripe. I used to not even be able to talk about work. Even if it wasn't about anything graphic that happened, he still didn't want to hear about it. So, things have gotten alittle bit better.

Anyways, like someone had said about other jobs that are more detrimental to society or other people.....

I have told him straight up, "Would you be more supportive if I was some ambulence chaser or a panhandler?"

Unfortunately his response was something like, "Well, on some level you know this is wrong if you feel the need to justify it. You won't even tell some of your friends or family."

I told him, "You know it is is kinda like why some people are afraid to come out of the closet. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with being a homosexual, but they don't want their family to disown them or people to treat them badly."

I don't mean to pigeon hole what we do or the struggles that the homosexual community goes through. I just couldn't think of a better example. I enjoy what I do. I don't believe I am hurting anyone or myself. I cannot tell my parents because they are pretty conservative. My dad told me I was being sleezy when I wanted to try out for Playboy. So, I know damn well he wouldn't be happy about this AT ALL. He also thinks that strippers and prostitutes are practically the same thing.
Yeah, I really want my father to think of me as that.
