Default Should I dance with scoliosis?

I have scoliosis and this past year, both Spring and Fall semesters I've had bad back pain related to it. Physical therapy and exercises have helped. Recently a (seemingly) good club has opened up in the area and I've been considering dancing for a while, especially since school is getting more intensive and I need the best 'bang for my buck' (bad pun). Every now and again it will flare up. How hard is dancing on the back? What would be the best low-impact heels? Should I even consider dancing with my condition? Also, I currently have state health insurance. I can keep my coverage as long as I keep under a certain amount of income. I can purchase coverage through my school, but I'd have to change all my doctors (which I already have established relationships with). I don't have a chance in hell of buying my own coverage because I have Acid Reflux, a 'pre-existing condition'. What should I do?

i wouldn't recommend dancing if you are worried about health issues. there is no sickpay, no insurance to cover if you injure yourself, and if your scoliosis is bad enough that you are seriously worried about hurting yourself, this seems like a question that you should run past your doctor.

Dancing is extremely hard on your back. I mean sure, you can wear heels that are more back-friendly, and stick to more back-friendly dance moves. But...let's just say that I only started having back problems after I started stripping.

I have scoliosis - 45 degree turn. I was in a Boston Jacket Brace for most of my pre-teen and teen years. Had a spinal fusion (for spondy) a year ago (almost to the day...29th December); so I know how serious all this back stuff can be.

I'm not a dancer, but I pole dance in 6 inch shoes for hours at a time, and belly dance, jog, etc. I do tons of things that are 'hard' on my back. The more I do, the stronger my back and the muscles around it get. Ask your Ortho doctor if pole dancing (purely for a hobby, if you're shy) is okay. If you can handle that, you'd probably be able to handle dancing. It's so much about core strength and balance - I can't see how it could be bad. My doctor encouraged it (but everyone is different).

You know the 'scoliosis mantra' - if something hurts, find a new way to do it! Listen to your body - the nice thing about people who experience reoccurring or chronic pain; they really become in tune with their bodies, and very aware of themselves.

You'll never know until you try - give it a couple nights and if it's too hard on you, don't do it. From what I've read on here, the physical pain is nothing compared to the mental anguish of pushing sales.

    Good luck!

It is EXTREMELY taxing on your body in general. I have nerve damage in my feet from eight years of heels; I can't feel my big toes or move my first three. My knees are also shot and constantly bruised from the floor. There's nothing wrong with my back and I sometimes get some pretty intense backaches from arching my back etc.

I would really bring this up with your doctor and not glamourise it at all. You're going to be in 4 to 8in heels, 6 - 8hrs per day, at least days a week. You're going to be performing functions which involve swiveling, twisting and turning. See what s/he says and take it from there.

I have mild scolosis and after a 10 hour shift (the av at my club) I have a very sore back. It depends on the extent of your condition.

Maybe give it a try and see how u go. Personally sitting for long periods on the computer flares up my back more than anything.

I also have scoliosis...I've had it since I was 18. Mines is only mild, but it does take a very hard toll on me after a long shift. I try not to do too much when I'm dancing and take it easy when I have to.

Like jaizaine said, it depends on the extent of your condition. I'd also say see how it goes. Just take it easy when need be and if things get bothersome for you, then dancing may be something that you should reconsider.

I am 3 degrees away from having severe scoliosis (I work out so you really can't tell unless I point it out before anyone thinks I'm walking around all crooked asking for lap dances). It killed my back for weeks, but has actually helped with building the muscles up. I would take some aleve before I went in for awhile and just go slow and sensual. Also be sure to stand up straight in the heels. Not only does it look better, but you'll build up your core which will help with your back too. I would make sure to do some good stretches before and after work and do outside core and resistance training too.

I have mild scoliosis. When you look at me straight on, you can see that one hip appears to be a little higher than the other. It hasn't really interfered with my dancing, but I would say to be aware of your muscle tone and how it develops. Because of my scoliosis, certain muscles in my back are stronger on one side than the other. When I started really getting into pole dancing and learning more tricks, I found that it just made it worse because when I was doing tricks, I kept using the same side of my body to hold my weight. Does that make sense? So, I would say to make sure all the muscles in your back are nice and strong so one side doesn't get overdeveloped, leaving your other side weaker and more prone to injury.

    Best of luck to you!

Also you may want to get a second opinion almost all women are told they have scoliosis. It is the way our hips turn. If they x ray your hips that is usually the problem and is not true scoliosis. If you have true scoliosis your entire upper torso will twist. Keep in mind that heels put stress on hips and cause them to turn out. This can make your symptoms worse.
I was told I had mild scoliosis, but it really was my hips. One was turned 14 mm and was raised 9 mm with regular adjustments it was fixed. But the best opinion is from your Doctor.

I share your pain. If you're gonna dance, avoid high heels if you can. I flatly refuse to work at a club that forces girls to wear those damn stilts. Heels are just bad for your back, knees and hips even for those who don't have scoliosis. They don't have arch support and eventually, you'll wind up with fallen arches. If you continue wearing heels, you'll soon wind up having lower leg pain, pain on the inside of your ankle and even swelling on the inside of your ankle. Here's a link to a site that tells you everything to expect from wearing heels and its really not something you need especially if you have scoliosis.

I have scoliosis and it's severe and the only time it really hurts is if i sit in a car for too long or wear tight jeans for too long. My only problem is stretching my sides- it hurts and my ribs jam into my hips. I have no insurance and when I was younger (i was born with it) i went to a specialist and they said there is nothing they can do to fix it because 2 plates in my spine are merged...so ive been taking Tylenol here and there to help with the pain, but not every day. My back looks crooked and the end of my spine goes to my right side. I actually think the extra curvature is sexy lol because my hips look like they have a lot more curve than normal. I can show you a picture if you want.

As for wearing heels, Ive worn heels for hours and my back hasn't really hurt, but I was walking around the whole time- not dancing.

^ No, it can definitely develop. I started developing it, but it went away naturally.

I have scholiosis as well- pretty damn bad too. I'm a trained dancer of 12 years (modern ballet and jazz) and LOVE to dance- I try not to let it stop me from anything. I also model and most of my gigs are dance related, of course I'm in pain but I love it so it's worth it- doctor said it can't get worse, but also there's nothing I can do either except strengthen the muscles which i've been trying with yoga and stretch when I can. I know there's risks for everything but I refuse to NOT do what I love because of my stupid back! I haven't started dancing in a club yet (trying though!) but that's my experience with regular dance+yoga positions- I can even do the inverts, headstands and such in yoga WITHOUT the wall Of course depends on your situation and what your doctor tells you too, for me, I deal with it, but that might not be an option for you if it'll make your back worse, good luck and be safe!

"Should I dance with scoliosis?" - NO is the answer to the OP's question.

"Is it possible to dance with scoliosis?" - is a completely different question.

You can be born with scoliosis yes - however, scoliosis can develop at any time during childhood and adolescence. It is more common in girls than boys, most commonly occurring at the start of adolescence.

Scoliosis is normally not a serious condition, but treatment is essential. Left untreated, the curve of the spine can worsen and cause damage to the spine, chest, pelvis, heart and lungs.

I have a chronic back condition - nothing near as dramatic as scoliosis - but I have crushed disc and sciatic nerve at the base of my spine. However - dancing and wearing high-heels is often agony - and so I have to manage it very carefully to avoid causing further permanent damage.

Whatever the cause of your scoliosis - dancing will most definitely not help - putting more strain on your back and your spine.

So talk this over with your Doctor.
