    Default aching leg muscles

    hi ladies!!!
so i started dancing the other day, and it was great, I loved it.. however the next day i was SO stiff and sore from dancing all night.. i am terribly unfit and i didnt warm up at all. trouble is, its now a week later and the backs of my legs still hurt SO much if i even try to bend forward and touch my toes!!! im wondering if ive strained the muscles or something.. are there any stretching excercises i can do to help my muscles relax? i dont want to be in pain next time i dance!! how embarassing!

Stretch before work. Take some Tylenol/Asprin/Bayer before work until you get used to things. When you get home take some arnica tablets and use an arnica gel on your legs.

Heat! Get a "moist heat" heating pad, take a hot shower, crank up the heat in your house, anything! You could also try Bikram, or "hot" yoga - will help you get limber and keep your muscles supple and toned!

yeah yoga is the bomb for loosening hamstrings and pretty much anything else that is tight! The best stretch for the back of the legs is plain old sitting on the floor with the legs out in a V and reaching for your toes, one foot at a time. I really despise this strech but it works. When I'm tight my yoga teacher gives me a belt to loop around my foot so I can pull the toes back a little. You could probably do that in front of the TV or something. Standing with your toes and balls of feet on a step and lowering the heels past the level of the balls will help stretch it out too.
Also you could try a heat rub with capsacin or wintergreen in it, like Deep Heat, Goanna Rub, Tiger Balm etc. I read in a pain management book that these balms only help because the tingling sensation takes the attention to your skin sensors instead of your pain receptors, but I'm not convinced that's true. But, even if it is, they're worth a try anyway!

tumeric has excellent anti inflamatory properties. Try taking some in hot water with a tiny bit of cayenne pepper. Arnica gel works pretty good too, but I think bromelain(pineapple enzyme) works even better. Bromelain is awesome on bruises also.
I took a year off from dancing once, and when I went back, I thought I was going to die after my first few shifts. It does get better though, I promise.

Yoga is one of those secret weapons that every dancer should use for good health. It keeps your muscles loosened up and also tones them. More importantly, it can help to reduce damage to the back and knees, which are put under a lot of pressure from walking in the shoes.
