I feel ya. I don't think I want kids either. Why not try something less invasive like mirena or paragard? Tubal ligation is serious business....

I have a Paragard and love it. I'm with you though, I never want children and I really want a tubal.
I am looking into Essure myself . I'm 27 years old, and feel zero maternal instinct. If I want something to take care of, I have a damn bunny, and I'd like a new husband.
I had my tubes tied when I was 27, and it was a bit of a struggle with the Drs. I got involved in a study of a new tubal ligation procedure and was quickly accepted at a teaching hospital. You may try a teaching hospital, but try calling a feminist women's health clinic in your area to see if you can get a referral for a medical professional that will perform the procedure.
The big thing is that hormonal birth control is really bad to be on for long periods of time. I had been on it for over 10 years, basically without breaks. Since there aren't any good studies of the long term effects of hormonal birth control, there may be other negative effects of long term or life long usage.
You may wish to take the following steps to get you on your path toward sterilization:
1. Tell your OB-GYN that you wish to be sterilized. Explain your reasons in a thoughtful manner and in detail. Write down your explaination for wanting to be sterilized. With a doctor standing right in front of you, it is hard to sound rational while also knowing that you are being judged. Predict the arguments that he/she will make such as: too young, currently childless, you might change your mind change mind, you might meet a spouse in future that wants kids etc.
2. If you get nowhere with your Dr, then start looking into places like planned parenthood or other abortion providers. They may not be able to help you directly, but they may be able to give you the name of a Doctor that can. (This is how I found my Dr to perform the procedure)
3. Look into study programs that need volunteers to participate in human trials. Things like robotic surgery require a lot of training of new Drs, and a patient that is healthy and looking for a routine procedure is a difficult find. You can't be shy when going this route. I had 22 Doctors in the surgical suite learning how to use a new endoscope designed for abdominal surgery. I was introduced to all 22 doctors while in the operating table, and was under a little longer than necessary so that everyone could practice looking through the scope. I figured with 22 doctors in the room, my chances of injury or death during surgery were as close to zero as possible. Oh, and I was pretty much awake for the whole thing. I had the twilight anesthesia, and remember quite a bit about the surgery. It felt like really, really bad menstrual cramps or like a bad bout of food poisoning. Painful, but not torturous.
I had my surgery on a Tuesday and was back at work by Thursday as a cocktail waitress. For dancing I'd give it about 10 days to 2 weeks before going back. You can't have sex or use tampons (or any kind of penetration) for 6 weeks after due to risk of infection.
I had my tubal in 1997 and have never regretted it once. Not even for a second. I knew I wasn't cut out to be a parent, and am very happy with my choice.
