Default Any runners who can give me advice?

So a few months ago i bought some running shoes and tried to run around my block. It was painfully embarassing with me wheezing away like an unfit beast!
Well i found a plan that sounds do-able and would like to make 2010 the year i get into running.
    Here is my plan http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/racing...hedule/67.html
So i figure i will try it out, after all 6 weeks isnt long at all.
One thing that concerns me though, it is very icy here right now, how do you runners keep up with it in this harsher weather?

Also any tips and advice would be glady appreciated!
    Oh and success stories too!

PS i cant afford a gym(trying to pay back student debts) so this and pole dancing will be my only exercise.

I have been a runner for a decade now but fresh in my mind are the days when I could run a block and no further. I thought "How do people do this, I'll never be a runner!" My approach at that time was do run a block, walk a block, until I had completed the distance I wanted to complete, which was 2 or 3 miles at the time.

Here is the greatest secret I have ever been told though to avoid side cramps, which are caused by a build up of carbon dioxide in your system. Follow this and you will never get a cramp: For each breath in, breath two out. Make it rhythmic and that way you can never build up too much CO2. In, out, out. In, out, out. Workds like a charm.

Aside from that, you WILL improve. Learn to love running and you will live a life of average weight, pride, and of course, improvement. Here's another secret. Always stop when you want to run more, when you are still excited about it and not burned out. That way it will always be exciting to strap your shoes on and go out again.

Personally, I change up between street running and treadmill running, but street is my favorite, especially in the fall and winter when it is cool and beautiful out. Good luck to you.

^^^ this is exactly how I trained, run a bit, walk a bit until I had the fitness level. I also skipped rope at home on horrible weather days, its an intense workout!
Theres no sense crying over every mistake,

I started doing the Couch to 5K program in August, and I really need to get back into it:

I went with that one because this guy made podcasts to run to (which are linked to from the site above), which I love because I don't have to time myself doing the intervals.

Do you have a park nearby with trails or paved walkways? I have a lake near my house with a paved sidewalk around it that is kept pretty clear. For me the hardest part is getting out the door - Once I'm outside, and moving and running, it keeps me plenty warm.

Also, going out and running in shitty weather makes you feel like a badass when you're done. It gets addictive.

Tips from another beginner - It really does get better! If you're following a program, don't be afraid to repeat weeks if you're struggling, and don't be tempted to skip ahead if you couldn't run one week. I think I did weeks 1-4 of C25K in about two months, and while it was discouraging sometimes, the first time I ran for five minutes straight without keeling over felt so incredible!

Another site that might help with motivation: You sign up and then enter your info every time you go running, and it keeps track and gives you charts of all your statistics. It syncs with the Nike+ system, if you have that, and there's also forums and challenges and people add Google maps of places they run.

Wow, that was a lot. Good luck, and Happy New Year!

The wheezing, burning chest thing goes away. I used to always think I just had asthma so I couldn't do it. No... I was just unfit LOL. Just keep pushing and eventually it gets easier.

I still do cadences in my head. this sets my pace.

Breathe in through your nose, out through your mouth. really suck that breathe in deep.

Swing your arms, this makes sure that your rib cage is flexing and your not cutting off your own breath. Think like you have cross country ski poles in your hands. plant them and push off.

Long strides. You should be landing on your heel and rolling up onto your toe with each step. Small steps with alot of bouncing look like a lot of action but your knees and ankles take a pounding. Long strides.

Shoes are important. A sales man should be able to help you get the right pair. Some people turn their feet out, some turn them in. The cushion is related to weight. The laces should cinch up the shoe so you foot is not slipping around inside, but shouldn't compress the foot and cut off circulation.

    Stretching. Absolutely. Positively. Important.

My friend said you should land on your ball --not the heel to protect the knees. What's the right landing placement?

So how good is it for your body? All my weight is around my middle, i have major love handles and a bigger pooch then id like!
Obviously ill be back in the healthy eating part too, ive done well today, special k for breakfast, granola bar mid morning and a salad with beetroot and balsamic for lunch with coconut chunks for afters, bowl of roasted chestnuts for dinner. I have had about 6 dark choc buttons though but i figure its not THAT bad as before id have had the whole bag!

^honestly, that sounds really great and healthy to me!

I carry my weight in the same place, and I"m fairly sure that running will get rid of that stubborn belly fat....I'm doing it too, so I'll let you know how it goes for me as well!

Forgot a heart rate monitor watch is good. You can really get it up there speed walking too.

You may find at first you gain weight. This is muscle and is denser than fat. Then the fat will melt off. Activity. So dog walking is great. I have heard of one couple that only watches TV when on the treadmill. The couch is for guests!

I just started running a few months ago, now I can run 1K without stopping for breath.

Like many others suggested, run a bit and walk abit. Also pace your breathing. Can't run a block yet? Start with timing instead. Run for 30 seconds, walk for 30 seconds. Up the timing in 30 second intervals over the course of a few weeks. Work up slowly.

I run at the indoor track at my gym. It is very icey up here right now and living in the suburbs not every pavement gets to see salt on it . Or sometimes I will run on the road in subdivisions in my area. My local YMCA has a running club I joined, they meet twice a week for a 6 k run.
