    Default SERIOUS back issues??

So I was in a bad accident when I was about 19 and was young and stupid and put it off and put it off until a year had passed and it was too late to claim it on my auto insurance. So years later, and 6 years dancing (on and off), I stay in HORRIBLE pain daily and its soo much worse when I work, which is only 2 days a week. Im taking classes online this semester so Id like to pick up atleast one extra shift per week.

Anyhow, I dont have health insurance and looked up options @ the charity hospital and figured out Id just have to go out of pocket w/ anything I decide to do. Tried the chiropractor and ended up in MORE pain than anything so I quit that shit.. I try to get massages ever so often but that tends to add up too. Ive gotten an MRI a few years ago and have 4 bulging discs and 2 herniated discs so decided to try the pain management. I went to a dr who charged 200 for the first visit and refused to give me any muscle relaxers, but wanted to put me on oxycotins, a whole bunch of em like 100 per month, which I totally refused bc I heard how bad that shit is. I am not trying to get addicted to anything and occasionally can find something on the "street", lortabs which help tremendously, which I may take one a week or so, when it gets REALLYbad...

Anyways, I guess my question is, anyone w/ bad back problems, a lot of pain, what do you do??? (besides hot baths which I do daily, muscle creams, ibeprofen, which of course Ive all tried and am just @ my wits end w/ it all). Please I do not want to hear "quit dancing" either bc that is not an option for another year when I quit school..

    Thanks in advance!!

Try pain management injections. I have a lot of back problems and have had lots of surgery, therapy, the whole deal - so I know what I'm talking about.

Try physical therapy, and if that doesn't work, try nerve blocking injections for your back. You can get them done up to 3 times a year. It SHOULD stop your back pain - at least it has with a lot of people. It's technically an outpatient surgical procedure. You'd be placed under a light twilight anesthesia and numbing agents + steroids are injected into the nerves of your spine. Should be instant relief and it lasts for months. It's expensive but worth it IMO.

    Hope that helps!

I'm so sorry to hear about your accident. I TOTALLY sympathise with you here and severe back pain is just unbearable and soul destroying.

I have had a chronic problem with a herniated L5/S1 disc, for years, which started in 1991. I had a micro-disectomy that same year to remove the offending bulge and everything was fine. However, 18 months later in 1994 I had a secondary prolapse - and as it was so soon after the surgery, they couldn't operate again.

Over the next 10 years I was in and out of Hospital for Epidural Injections which worked wonders on the pain - but didn't solve the problem.

Then Summer 2008 it got a whole lot worse and I was referred to another Surgeon who diagnosed yet another hernated disc in the same place. He operated in April last year and found that my sciatic nerve had been 'stuck' to my spine by the older prolapse which had gone all crusty.

So far it's been OK - and the relief from pain has been enormous. However, over the years my left calf has wasted, which makes modelling and walking in high heels a painful experience..but it's what I do for a living!

My medication had included Morphine, Codeine, Amytryptiline, Ibuprophen, Meloxicam..oh you name it I've swallowed it!

My strong suggestion would be to see an expert Orthopaedic Consultant quick, with a view to having surgery to put the most fragile discs right - but you'd be off work for at least 12 months. However you're young and should recover well if you take heed of the advice you're given.

Chiropractors can often be 'quacks' and in your situation, should be avoided like the plague.

In the meantime, hot baths are good. Try to see a Physiotherapist and get a Programme of home exercises to relax the joints and tissues, and to strengthen the muscles surrounding the discs. As far as medication is concerned - my own horrific experiences with opiate painkillers (I'm a recovering alcoholic which doesn't help!!) would lead me to say - stay off anything addictive, especially 'street shit' - and stick with anti-inflammatories' like Ibuprophen or Meloxicam (UK name).

Natural compounds like 'Glucosamine Sulphate' help keep disc joints supple too and are clean and non-addictive. I use it and it's great.

Oh - and of you're a smoker - stop. Smoking wrecks spinal discs apparently - nicotine destroys soft tissues in the joints.

If, as you say, your discs have actually ruptured or 'herniated' - surgery may be the only option for a complete resolution to this problem. You must also accept that you will have a permanent weakness in your spine.

One thing is for certain - if you do nothing - and keep on dancing the way you are now - you'll do further, if not irreperable damage to your spine and be crippled with arthritis by the time you're around 45 or 50.

Sorry to sound gloomy - but all this is true. However, unlike me, you have your age on your side to get it fixed.

^ I'm going to second staying off all the 'addictive' medications. I don't have an addictive personality, but Opiates got me hooked. The most painful experience I've gone through was coming down from Vicoden. Beats out any pain from Spinal Fusions, Eye Surgery, Labor pains....it was horrific.

Try and find a good doctor! And take care! XOXO!

Thanks for the info yall!! Im avoiding the heavy meds as much as possible but dancing is seriously KILLING me..Im only working 2 maybe a week and paying for school myself so paying for a dr out of pocket is out of the question. Ive tried to get insurance but the quotes were ridiculous bc of all of my pre existing conditions so Im screwed as far as that goes. Im hoping, when my fiance and I get married, a year and a half from now, Ill be able to be added to his insurance and get something done

There is one big thing I forgot. In the United Kingdom - we have The National Health Service, so we don't have to pay a penny for treatment.

So I apologise. Your problem is of course exacerbated by the fact that you have to find the money to pay for any consultations, examinations or procedures.

I fully understand your dilemma. My Grandmother lived in the US for 35 years - however when she became so ill that she could not afford to pay for treatment in the US anymore - she had no option but to come back home to the UK.

The obvious thing to do - if you value your health - is stop dancing and find another, less damaging way, of funding your schooling.

Couldn't the Charity Hospital that you mentioned be able to refer you to other possible sources of free treatment - or is there really no such thing in the US?

Fellow back and neck pain sufferer here!

Chiropractic care has worked WONDERS for me. Almost Jaded (my fiance) has a herniated disc at L5/S1, and our chiropractor has him bounching around like a little kid again.

We both take some serious Magnesium supplements, which weirdly enough really help with the pain. Ibuprofen is great, hot baths, etc.

What's really helped is something our chiropractor offers called Traction Therapy, or Decompression therapy. It's AMAZING. Combine that with massage, and OMG awesome. Look into it!

I have reoccurring sprained lumbar. Its easy enough to say stop dancing, but sometimes its not an option at least immediately...so I wanted to add that in the meantime you could get taken off the stage list, get a duty note if you have to from the doc, paying the doc fee is a worthy investment at least for me it made a huge difference, that and wearing much shorter heels, as well as not doing extreme back arches on dances.... best of luck!

Ps. Ive heard nothing but good things about the decompression, my customer was just telling me about a home chair thats 300, probly cheaper than appointments over time?

Go to a massage therapy school and get a cheap hour long massage. Take a pain pill before work. Stretch. Hot baths.
