Default "Designer" clothing, do you buy it?

I'm just curious. The other day I saw this jacket in the mirror of the Betsey Johnson store in the mall:

and I had a "omg. want!" moment. I figured it was probably like 150 bucks or something "ridiculous". I didn't go into the store, but I did look it up online later on a whim. 398.00 ..................W..T..F?

Maybe it's that I grew up poor, but even if I HAD that kind of cash to blow on a jacket, I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I think you're a horrible person if you do. To each his/her own. It's just that lately I've been seeing girls with purses that cost a grand, shoes that cost 500 dollars, sunglasses that cost 300 ... etc etc etc. Of course I really like some of these things (aside from the brand-name/logo-everywhere-crap...which I find tacky). Every once in awhile I'll see something like that jacket in the store or a pair of shoes and think

    A. I wish I could actually afford that
    and
    B. I think I'd personally be upset with myself if I ever bought it, even if I could

but I mean... the most expensive pair of jeans I own was 98.00 and the most expensive purse was 80.00. With both those items I had "talk myself into" buying them.

I DO believe that, to a POINT, you get what you pay for. I mean, my 80.00 dollar purse has held up a fuck of a lot better than all the 10.00 purses I ever bought. Which, is why I bought it. I was tired of replacing purses.

I just always feel like I could have done so many other more responsible things with the money. Maybe the point is that when you're wealthy enough that's not a factor, I don't know. Somehow I wonder if it would ever change for me though.

Any of you feel the same as me? Or, do you often buy "pricey" items (I realize my idea of pricey may differ from yours)? Are you a self proclaimed "label whore"? If so, did you go through a guilt phase?

Just curious. You'll have to excuse me. All this girlie stuff is usually foreign to me. I mean, I'm 30... and I'm pretty sure I just RECENTLY had my first "omg shoes!" moment.

Im guilty of this indulgence. I don't care what it costs when it comes to my clothes. I've spent thousands upon thousands upon thousands of dollars. Im proud of the way I look, both when I dress up and when Im just in jeans and a t-shirt. It just makes me feel good.

I will admit, I recently got a pair of shoes for 80.00 (on sale from 140.00!) to wear for a formal event... and the entire time I kept thinking/feeling like my feet looked great and that gave me a good feeling.

but, it was mixed with that guilt for feeling vanity.

I can understand what you're saying though. I see how it could make you feel confident.

I've seen people go both ways. They grow up with nothing so if they can, they get everything they ever wanted, and I've seen others have the same issue you're having. They can't justify the cost because they could spend the money in so many other useful ways.

I'm lucky. I've never wanted for anything in my life. My father grew up under horrendous circumstances and swore he'd take better care of his kids.

I take it to a different level altogether. LoL. Not really totally healthy, but my closet is well stocked.

I've got to admit that I will indulge in expensive things. It doesn't have to be designer labels, but I do not buy really cheap ass things anymore, especially when it comes to clothes/purses/shoes. They just don't seem to hold up as well or look as good as the designer things do. I do understand where you are coming from, because there is a limit on what I will spend, and what I think I would spend even if I was filthy rich. Right now there is just no way I would pay $500 and up for a pair of shoes, but I would pay 2-3 hundred as long as I loved them. It doesn't have to be super upscale, like I really like Guess, Bebe, and the such but I tend to steer clear of what I think is an 'unreasonably' priced stores. $100 for a pair of jeans is pretty standard for me, but I do own jeans from American Eagle and stuff from Abercrombie. Yeah, I'm one of those people haha. I typically only buy my kids clothes at gapkids and now hot topic (my 10 year old daughter likes their stuff and I like the hello kitty and band t-shirts), and I really don't buy them anything that isn't name brand, now that I think about it. I do buy most of my 9 month twins clothes from the second hand store although.

I didn't grow up rich, and we never had really expensive stuff but we always had name brand stuff and were weren't poor, just middle class. I don't think I've felt guilty about a purchase.

I'm the same way. I have very expensive taste in stuff, but refuse to buy it. Been that way since i was a little kid.

Even when my parents had money (like a lot of money...i had a personal shopper at neiman marcus at age 3, lol), I used to argue with my mom about price. I'd tell her i didnt want her buying something because i thought it was too much. Or, if she insisted, I'd work it so I could get two things for the sam eprice as the one, so I felt a little better (i.e. was getting more for the money). I still do it to this day if she takes me shopping. We get into so many arguments because she wants tbuy em something (say, $50 shoes for example) and I'll argue with her how I don't really "need" them, etc. etc.

I just can't make myself spend the money. Hell, I am still wearing a lot of clothes from high school, lol.

the most expensive stuff i own is all gifts.

Now, as far as buying stuff for other people, well, as long as I can remotely afford it, then the sky is the limit. I love getting people I care about expensive/nice stuff

    So, I totally understand

I don't have a lot of stuff, but what I do own is fairly nice. The absolute cheapest clothes I will wear are from Express, and I used to think Express was ridiculously overpriced. I'm also a bit of a Coach whore and a designer jeans whore. I think I maybe have two pairs of jeans that aren't designer, and those are my home-improvement-project-and-lawn-mowing jeans.

I sprung for a wonderful pair of designer pumps when I was in London last fall, and I spent the equivalent of maybe $350 on them, and I've worn them I think three times, and I LOVE THEM and have never once regretted buying them.

I also tend to spend waaaay too much on kitchen stuff. I go a little crazy in Williams-Sonoma.

I know I'm super picky because when my Mom used to dress me (till I was maybe 16, and got a job) I looked ridiculously frumpy and unattractive. I remember Mom had bought me this weird red Christmas sweater with shoulder pads and big snowmen with embroidery and had me wear it in 9th grade, and my math teacher was wearing the same sweater at school. Ugh. And she thought that if my clothes were tight, then they were too small. So my jeans were always ultra-high-waisted and super baggy in the ass, and straight leg that didn't quite reach the tops of my feet. I don't understand it, cause she went to school in the late 70's, and you know they were wearing tight clothes. She bought a lot of ugly sweaters and brown corduroy pants (omfg, no wonder all the kids hated me) for me, and I looked like shit. Then I moved to NY and after maybe six months got into the Goth crowd and started buying my own clothes. And they were all black, and you'd better believe they were flattering.

So, anyways. The reason I'm so super picky about quality of clothing is because of that.

It depends for me... I own a few $400+ dollar coats... but in my mind... those are sort of investment pieces that are going to last for a few years.
I'd say I generally set my limit for normal clothing items around $100.
unless it's Gouk or Hangry & Angry... where I set my limit at $250 per piece.

It honestly depends on what it is and how nice it looks on me.

One time, my mother in law took me out shopping. She told me that money was of no concern and that I should pick anything I want.

I couldn't move from the sale rack. I think the entire outfit I got ended up costing $40. I can't really think 'wow, that tank top is totally worth $20!' when I can typically get tank tops for $5, for example.

I do have some splurge items (my winter coat was $200, but I saved for it and budgeted for it for months because I knew I'd need it.)

I didn't grow up poor, but I did grow up with no clothes and no personal spending money. And when I first moved out on my own, for about 6 years, I had the 'oh, I can't pay that bill again' thing going on. I don't want to go back like that, so I can't help but want to keep upping my savings and feel guilty when I spend it on stupid stuff.

Just a mental hump I can't get over.

Aquascrutum have a 'factory shop' about 20 miles from me where they sell their stuff at a heavy discount when its coming to the end of a specific season. I can pick up (for example) very good quality mens' shirts at about 1/4 of the shop price.

And there are a few other places I know where I can get other designer stuff at a heavy discount.

But I wouldn't pay full price in a shop, because then you're just paying for the cachet of the name.

I feel exactly the same on all levels (cept the parents having money part). Talk about expensive taste... I swear, if I go into a store and randomly pick my favorite thing in it, it's almost always one of the highest priced items. Or, in magazines when they have those pages with items that are steals VS splurges ..... without looking at the prices I'm almost always more attracted to the "splurges". Even though they're supposed to look similar.

and 90% of my favorite cars are Rolls-Royce or Bentley.

I don't buy designer stuff just to 'have designer stuff'. A lot of times I find fairly nice replicas of designer things I like in stores like Express or Charlotte Russe. I would never spend 300 bucks on a pair of jeans, or 150 on a purse - becasue I'm clumsy and break/spill stuff anyway. And in the case of that Betsey Johnson jacket - I'm guilty of sewing my own Betsey knockoffs for my own personal use....I'm fairly handy with a sewing machine, so I've made myself many versions of her little cocktail dresses and skirts that actually fit me better than her labels do (I'm super busty). I've done this with other desigers on occasion too, becasue as much as I love their pattern/style, no friggen way I'm paying a grand for it when it's under $50 to make!!!

The only thing I can justify spending a lot of dough on: sneakers/footwear for exercising. You get what you pay for in that respect, and I take no chances with my health.

I also grew up pretty poor and I suck at shopping because I don't buy a lot, but I always buy expensive stuff when I do buy. It is so worth it. It makes you feel amazing. 90% of the dresses in my closet cost a minimum $500. My biggest indulgence ever was a $3k prada limited edition handbag. Mind you my husband technically bought it for me. But I will never ever buy a cheap handbag again... this thing is the shit! I constantly get complimented on it. I say go for it!

I don't even look at price tags. If I want it I'll buy it. I regularly spend up to $2k on shoes, I paid $600 for a pair of jeans. The list goes on. I appreciate quality items and european designer shoes are made well and beautiful to wear.

I am glad that these items are unaffordable to many coz I don't want to wear what the majority has/can afford. Yeh I am a snob undeniably.

I figure I do a job that pays very well and I love being able to afford nice things that I want.

I've made alot of my own clothes. I'm not going to push my beliefs on anyone, so I'll just say that I rarely buy anything new because I don't support the way most (90%) apparel is made. If I own any brand names it's because I paid 5 bux for them at a thrift store. I'm a well versed seamstress, and don't see the point in paying alot for clothing when I could invest that $ elsewhere........ Just my .02, for whatever it's worth.

I've never purchased designer clothes/ accessories new or at full price. I just don't see the value in it. It isn't like I'm being followed by the paparazzi or something. Besides, fashion trends change so quickly, I can buy a lower quality item and by the time it is getting worn out, the styles have changed anyway.

Here is a similar style jacket on ebay for $150: Link

There is no reason to pay full retail for items you really adore. Just shop around a bit and you'll find something you love and that is a lot cheaper, too.

I'm guilty of indulging in some expensive shopping habits. As far as that habit goes, I consider myself kind of middle of the road. I'd spend up to $200 on a coat, upwards of $400? No way. At that price, I feel like I'd just go mad if it ripped or I spilled coffee on it or something. Clothes shouldn't be allowed to become precious, and at that price I just couldn't comfortably live in it.

When I do spend a lot of cash on something, I try to make sure it's something I'm going to use for a long time. I won't drop a lot of money on something trendy that I know I'll be tired of in a year. It can be worth it to spend more on a few quality things that will last you a long time. I went ahead and bought some hunter rain boots on sale, because I was tired of buying cheap rainboots at target that fall apart and need to be replaced once or twice a year.

I also spend $500-$1200 on shoes, $300 jeans. besides $40 tank tops i probably don't own any articles of clothing under $100. However, I don't usually pay for these things myself. I definitely cannot stomach to drop $1000 that could be spent on good botox and hair appts on one pair of shoes, when I don't go out that much anymore anyway. I do have men buy me these things though, mostly my ex. I've been buying some of my own clothes lately and looking at the price tags has been killing me!
Its hard not to get sucked into that lifestyle in manhattan though. I fully plan on being less materialistic one day and moving to Oregon or someplace where I can hopefully just relax.

My mother also kind of raised me to be a snob. We've discussed how we can't walk into an Express store without nearly breaking out in hives. Really the idea of shopping at many discount stores makes my skin crawl at the moment because its all crowded and hot and clothes are everywhere and you can't get any service. and you have to look through tons of crap to find something decent, and then you have to try it on because it could look like crap.
with my brands i never have to try them one because i know they're gonna fit like a glove.

so i think part of buying "designer" clothes is the simple shopping experience. but i will fully admit that i'm spoiled and i really don't like it, but i guess not enough to actually do something about it yet

and to me its also totally worth it to buy like 3-4 purses @ ~2k each and rotate. they last a long time and just feel great carrying around all the time. wow i'm shallow. thanks for this thread.

that's very true. i'm a very messy person, and i've ruined/lost thousands of dollars of goods. especially expensive winter wear, like countless scarves, gloves and earmuffs. oh also jewelery! my ex won't even give me any anymore because i've literally lost everything except 1 tiff's bracelet and my diamond belly button ring. oh i've had my movado for 1yr now too. i'm probably on digital camera #7 and laptop #3 (in 3yrs). so indcredibly ridiculous and yet i do nothing to change.
i'm going to write out an actual list for myself and put it on my fridge or something so i can remember to take better care of my things. losing things is not cute.

That's ok. Express is nothing more than Wal Mart fashions with over-inflated price tags. I bought a pair of jeans at Express several years ago. I couldn't believe how poorly made they were, and I paid $97 for them. I never spend that much on clothes, especially when I know I can get a nearly identical item at JC Penney for $15.

The funny thing is that in Eugene Oregon, the highest end clothing you can find is at Macy's. Designer items just aren't available here. However, you can buy just about any article of clothing you can possibly think of in tie-dye and made of Hemp fabric. Right now I'm dressed entirely in Old Navy and Target clothes. Practical, comfortable and definitely cheap. Even better, there are no dress codes for places like restaurants and night clubs. I could comfortably walk into any establishment in the region in exactly what I'm wearing right now.

I do have a tendency to spend too much on gourmet foods. I'm not even that good of a cook.

I buy 2-3 expensive staple items (I'll spend upward of $1000 on a single item because I can justify being totally selfish and throwing away my money) every season and am a little thriftier with the rest of my wardrobe by shopping at places like Forever 21, TopShop, Urban Outfitters, etc.

    Something to keep in mind:
-if it's a trendy piece that will be "so last season" in a few months time, skip it.
-if it's a piece that can hold it's own over several years, invest in good quality (usually coats, shoes, and purses).

I love Betsey Johnson; every formal dress for high school was BJ, but some of her things are way too cooky to every be worn outside of an editorial.
I can't wait to see what Eric Sartori does with the brand though.

i have snobbish tendencies when it comes to shopping. if i can afford it, i will buy it sans guilt. what the fuck do i look like, taking off my clothes for a living if i can't buy myself nice things? perhaps it's also because my parents never bought me nice things, so i make sure i don't perpetuate that. i do deserve nice things, and if i can afford them, i will have them.

but i do understand that it's hard to make the first expensive purchase. but for me, it's more aggravating when i am cleaning out my closet and i see all this cheap shit that i shouldn't have bought in the first place and thinking of how the money could've went to something nicer.

and frankly, once you start buying designer denim, it's hard to stop.

Part of it for me is that honestly I see plenty of people with "designer" stuff that look like crap and plenty of people in "cheap" stuff that look amazing.

I think too often people assume that just because they paid more, they must look good in it. Not true.

I'm really big on quality products so I do have a tendency to lean towards designer brands, but I think you can still do it smart and not pay too large of an amount!

When it comes to items that you'll be using frequently I think it's okay to splurge because these items, like purses and sunglasses, have the potential to last you at least a full year or more depending on how much you like to update! So I will usually get one new purse a year that costs $80+ and I've kept my $80 Gucci sunglasses for over 2 years now. I think jeans fit into this category too considering most people wear them on a weekly/daily basis. I haven't found the need to spend more than $100 for a nice pair of everyday designer jeans. (Seven's, True Religion, Rock & Republic etc.)

You can usually find really great designer shirts for cheap/fair prices if you're willing to browse around. I won't spend more than $40 on a shirt and I hate even spending that much, but will if it's absolutely worth it and I've got to have it. In fact the winter jacket I got this year was only about $40 and can be worn casually or for dressy occasions. It's also very warm but not puffy or huge so her in Cali it worked out perfect.

Regarding shoes I am kind of a sucker for them but once again won't go over $100 and have lots of luck around the $40 price range. Mostly designer names such as Steve Madden.

My ultimate secret with all of these items and all of these brands is Nordstrom Rack. It's an outlet that sells brand new merchandise from Nordstrom, but the reason it's discounted so heavily is that most of the items are out of season! Silly huh? lol

Another great thing about the Rack is that most everything in that store whether you recognize the label or not, is quality and for the most part affordable for "normal" peeps like us that don't have huuuge bank accounts. I can't rave more about that place because they have EVERYTHING!!! The only problem is that it's hit or miss at times since you don't know what they're going to get. However they do get new shipments every week.

So yeah, that's how I keep name brand gear in my closet without spending buku bucks and feeling guilty. If you have a Nordstrom Rack in your area I highly suggest taking a peek!!!
