America is becoming more and more anti-intellectual.

I went to graduate school and graduated 2004. Since then I have had a job that didn't require a Masters (only a college degree) and many rejections due to being "overqualified". If I could do it over, I probably wouldn't have gone to college or graduate school. The main reasons I decided to pursue an advanced degree was because I thought it would be an advantage over others, and that I would eventually get a Ph.D and become a full professor. The problem with that is there aren't enough full professor jobs anymore (many schools are going to adjunct and many schools are hiring cheap foreigners).

Honestly, the only thing it does for me is make me look "smart". I am already smart and didn't need the paper to prove it.

from a non US-centric viewpoint, the problem isn't that foreign 'labor' is too cheap. The problem is that US 'labor' is too expensive !!! And this point holds true across the entire spectrum, from unskilled workers at $8 versus $2 an hour, to PhD's at $150k versus $60k per year. Yet while there are laws preventing US employers from paying less than $8 for unskilled labor, no such laws apply to PhD's !!!

But there are many problems with that. My graduate school was known for being cheap and hired many adjuncts, TA's, and foreign professors. With regards to the foreign professors, they are tending to get anti American ones. One of my professors (he was Nigerian) would spend the whole class talking about how stupid Americans are. Whether he was right or wrong, that's not something he should be saying. The entire class would complain about him (he did so many bad things such as change assignments AFTER everyone turned them in) but the school did nothing. I often wonder what Americans the school bypassed to hire him.

^^^ probably true re stepping over American professors ... but then again the College probably saved $90k per year by hiring the Nigerian professor under an H1B visa for $60k a year versus paying an American professor the $150k a year needed to cover their student loans and other debt load !

I'm going to change the direction of this a little bit, so get ready!

A lot of the focus has been using post-graduate education in the educational industry. I think that one has been pretty well hashed out. Waste of time and money.

Also, some discussion has been an unwillingness of employers to pay for post-graduate education. However, there are employers who are willing to pay more to get someone with post-gradute education. (Usually in the sciences but some foundations and such will want the MBAs and MFA type stuff.)

I know for sure that post-graduate education is better paying in government work. Whether being a direct employee or as a contractor. (Contractors can charge more for having post-graduate educated people on a project.)

Also, it matters what one does with it. This is the free market use of a post grad education. I know a biologist with a Ph.D. who runs his own lab. While some employers may not be impressed with a MS/Ph.D. usually most customers are.

And when one is acting as a consultant to a company - not as an employee - the company management (who are now customers like above) really likes the post-graduate education.

So I don't think we want the thread to persuade post-graduate education is a complete waste of time and money. One simply needs to position one's self differently in the mix of things compared to being an employee (and what company has those these days anyhow right?)
