    Default Call Animal Services???...

Its been freezing here in Florida...there has been ice on my car every morning and the daytime is terrible.
I know someone who leaves his dog outside 24/7. Im the only one who's been bugging him to PLEASE let his dog in, even in just the bathroom before he freezes to death. He says no, dogs stink. I guess its his girlfriends or friends dog that cant keep it in her house. I am the only one who knows the dog is back there, he doesnt have neighbors. I think now Im going to call Animal Services and deal with him later (he would know I called Im sure) bcuz I cant stand the thought of that dog (hes a Rot) bein out in this cold.
Am I wrong for just calling and not telling him it was me??

If he has absolutely no shelter out there for the dog, then yes call. I had an old neighbor here that never let the dogs inside but they had a heated pen/kennel in the garage during the winter. Doesn't matter if he knows you reported it or not, that dog may not make it. Save the poochie!

What kind of dog is it? Does he have any shelter like a dog house or a covered area where he can sleep? Depending on the breed of dog, he may be just fine. Some dogs have a double coat (such as golden retrievers and german shepherds) and can stand freezing weather just fine, and really even thrive in the cold. Other breeds need to be kept warm, especially smaller dogs.

I'm assuming since the dog stinks that he would have all his fur (not shaved or trimmed by a groomer). It sounds like this person shouldn't own a dog, if he or his girlfriend isn't going to do anything more than just feed it and leave it in the yard. Dogs need attention daily from their owners, and it sounds as if this person just doesn't have the time or desire to care for their pet.

Call. People think Rotts are ok to be outdoors, but in reality they have a short coat and get cold easily. Dogs dont stink if you bathe them...I have 3 in my house at the moment(1 of my own and 2 fosters...plus 2 cats and 4 birds!) and you cant smell them in my house.

If he has no shelter for the dog its illegal in FL to have him outside at ALL...not even just in the cold. The heat can be just as deadly.

Does the gf who owns the dog know that hes out there in the cold?

In any case..call and call NOW. The dogs life could depend on it.

Sorry Paris...but having seen plenty of frozen dogs in my life I can tell you that NO dog is ok being outside 24/7 in freezing weather. Double coat or no. Or very hot weather. This is why I will NEVER EVER believe its ok to have outside only animals. I've seen too many in BAD shape. Many who didnt survive.

If animal control won't do anything...can you go to Goodwill and get some blankets, maybe a soft plush big dog bed, and set it up in the backyard, so that the doggie can bundle up in it if he gets too cold? Dog will know what to do with it, and it would only cost you a few bucks.

I guess I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. I've got several neighbors that have outdoor dogs (one is a police dog, he likes being outside probably because he spends all day in the back of a cruiser), and the dogs seem to lounge in the cool weather. They are all long haired, double coated dogs, and their owners take good care of them.

I forget that some people are very bad and neglectful of their animals. I couldn't imagine being that cold and calloused. My doggy is so pampered that I have guilt if I don't walk her at least 2x a day, and she has a giant yard to run and play in, too.

If you aren't sure, Xiomara, definitely call animal control. It is better to be safe than sorry.

I hate to burst your bubble, but dogs (especially a rottie) can withstand freezing temps. He may not be used to it so he may be uncomfortable, but he won't die in 30 degree weather. I personally would call and make up some major abuse story just to get them out there. BUT, I wanted to set you up for as little disappointment as possible because MIA animal services probably wouldn't see that dog's situation as a fineable or removal situation. If they see that he is fed and isn't disease ridden, they won't bother- too many animals in shelters to remove fairly healthy animals from their homes.

Absolutely the right thing to do if you are concerned is to call Animal Services.

Only they have the expertise to decide if the dog is being mistreated and they will know what to do - or not.

Your identity will (or should) be kept anonymous by them.

The one thing you can't afford on your own conscience, is to NOT call...and then discover later that the animal perished from cold.

If you're in doubt - call them. You can always try and help to save a life - but you can never bring one back.

Its not a bubble honey. I've been working with animals for 20 years and was a tech for many years. Domestic animals (dogs, cats, etc..) are NOT equipped to be outdoos 24/7/365. Esp without proper shelter from the elements where they cannot get warm/cool (depending on the season). They may not die...but they will be miserable and it will affect his health in a negative way. ESPECIALLY in an area like this where he has likely never had to encounter these temps before.

My information comes from years of studying and experience..its not an opinion, its fact. I've seen PLENTY of Rotts (and all other breeds) come in with hypothermia.

So please dont speak condescendingly to me about this. Its a topic I have devoted much of my life to.

Call. It's actually illegal to do that here in most parts of Florida. Where in Florida are you located? If it's been anywhere above Tampa the last few days and they've been under that freeze watch/warning then keeping a dog out in that weather is cruel. Yeah, the dog could - technically - survive, but it wouldn't be very pleasant for the poor animal, and thusly, cruel. Keep in mind, the dog is used to WARM/HOT weather, so it's fur isn't thick and equipped do deal with the cold.

I doubt the animal will be removed if it's otherwise healthy, but SPCA or law enforcement may just scare the owners into letting the doggie inside on colds nights.

Let us know how it goes for the poor Poochie.

First of all, HONEY- I wasn't talking to you. I never spoke condescendingly to anyone- I believe that would be your work, HONEY. I was talking to the OP. Re-read my post which explained that I didn't want her to get her hopes up for the dog being removed AND told her to make up a major abuse story just to get them out there. Have you ever watched animal cops? They have to jump through hoops to prove animal cruelty. It really has to be an extreme case to legally remove the dog.

BTW, I am pet first aid certified through Red Cross AND level 2 FEMA Animals in Disaster certified. I know a bit about the subject myself, HONEY.

^good job. When in doubt it is always better to act than to do nothing. I also work with animals at the RSCPA in australia and hopefully going to be a vet one day. I don't know much about cold temps since we don't get them here, but certainly no shelter is an issue. Also the owners responds tends to show that he obviously doesn't give a shit about the dog so who knows what other mis-treatment the dog has gone through. Even if they deem that nothing needs to be done at least you can rest well knowing you tried to help.

BTW Nikita I also thought you were referring to CKXXX and it did seem a bit harsh, but it seems you did not actually mean to come across that way.. the issue with the written word I suppose.

Well I'm glad I wasnt the only one that thought that. And considering your attitude in the past...you cant blame me. Esp since you were wrong.

Glad you called Xio. Maybe you can call back and get an update? Not sure if they will tell you, but if you want to know its worth a shot.

    So glad you called!
I have called many times on my neighbor's dog that gets out and roams the area. The officers kept missing the dog until one day I was going down the street and saw the dog and an animal officer, I pointed out the house that the person lived at and she went right up to the house.
I had already spoken to the owners about their dog, but they just seemed nonchalant. I have seen this dog since February of last year. That's neglect if there needs to be a definition for it!
Please don't lick me, it tickles..

^^ No. No dog. Huskies can be inside but they also need to be outside. But it is not okay to leave any dog outside without any kind of shelter to return to, not even a dog house. It's wrong. I have a beagle, and they are outdoor dogs and trust me, mine mopes around when its raining outside cuz she loves being outside...hates rain. But even if I kept her outside all the time and didnt allow her in the house...she would have her own shelter to go to when it was cold or night or wet, with heat and food and water.

I have to agree with CKXXX, NO dog should be left out without shelter.

Yes. What pixie said. Lots of outdoor time is good for some breeds, but they MUST have shelter at least. And its very important for breeds like huskies to be indoors during hot weather as they can get heat stroke very easily

And if its an only dog...they should spend nights indoors. Outside of weather issues, dogs are pack animals. You are his pack. Being isolated from you all the time, all night, etc is really bad for their mental health

Its illegal in most places to have an outside dog without proper shelter. You can get arrested on animal cruelty charges.

I definitely agree with what you have been saying in this thread.

Northern breeds do need plenty of outdoor time. That said they need shelter and proper housing. Also they need to bond with their people.

Yes huskies were bred to run and be out in the cold. That said take a look at what goes on to prep these dogs for races. They are kept outdoors (and from what i know they are in kennel at night), however are often racing 10 or so hours a day. Such activity by it's very nature keeps the body warm.

Heck I know of people in my running group that do "cold runs" (light t-shirt and shorts) in the middle of the winter and still come back sweating.

Working dogs spend their days doing what they are bred to do. They keep warm from the activity.

Family pets kept outdoors on the other hand can become victim to the elements. Most are chained, thus giving them limited movement. And with little to do and no bond with the family their body temperature does not stay the same.

My dogs are kept inside and walked 4 times a day. I have three dogs that I compete with in the show ring and in dog sports.

Absolutely! Without a job to do to keep them moving..even northern breeds can get hypothermia. I've seen it a million times since I worked as a tech up north.

And as for the chaining...depending on where you live..that is illegal. Here in FL you can be arrested on cruelty charges for chaining your dog outside. No dog should EVER be chained. For SO many reasons. Fenced yard, leash walking, dog runs, etc... NEVER EVER chaining.
