    Default bald patches from extensions

I've had extensions for 2 years which I totally regret. My hair used to be long and thick and then I went blonde and half of it fell out and I had to have heaps cut off the length so I got extensions.

I had two bald spots on my scalp now. The guy who does my extensions says they are from stress? I call bullshit on this. I've had plenty of stress in my life and I've never gone bald in spots from it. It's the extensions.

Should I remove them immediately? I have trouble wearing the clip-ins that's the only problem and I have more magazine shoots coming up and my hair has to be as long as it is now.

Will my hair grow back or will I be left with those bald patches?

it happens the stress from the extentions breaks your hair. you need to give your a hair break and either do a differnet hair exention style or a new hair style all together. or wear wig for a while til your hair grows back.

its the proccess of having hair extentions. it might not be from stress, just each time you put in extentions in your hair you put your hair under stress not you personally.

First, you need to call the modeling client and explain the situation to them. As them if they'd be okay with you changing your hair to a shorter style. It may not be that big of a deal. If it is then you need to look at the time frame and decide when to take out the extensions.

Either way though, if heard of plenty of girls with extensions going through this... so I would venture to say it's likely a combination of bleaching and extensions. Try laying off on the extensions for a bit and maybe just highlighting your hair rather than bleaching the whole thing.

They guy who did them is trying to cover his own ass. Of course it was the hair extensions that caused the tension to pull your hair out at the root, and cause a bald spot. He should have matched your hair type to the amount of hair in each bond, for example, if you have very fine, weaker hair, you shouldn't try to fuse a whole thick strand of extension hair that's 4 times in thickness to your natural hair, or the weight and tension of it will pull out your natural hair at the root.

I also have trouble wearing clip ins, I have naturally fine hair and the clips in either don't stay clipped, or just slide right out. I find that putting hair spray along the part where you clip them in and blasting with a hair dryer for a few seconds before you clip them in makes it tackier and easier for them to stay put, if that makes sense. Honestly, I get just as natural of a result using clip ins as strand by strand fusion.

Now, as for the type of extension you are using, I HOPE HOPE HOPE it's not the glue type bond. From what you are describing, it sounds like your hair may not be able to handle this type of a bond, it can be harsh on fine or damaged hair. You should switch to some sort of cold fusion method. I really liked DreamCatchers (the Paris Hilton strand by strand fusion brand). The quality of hair was phenomenal (I think it was Scandanavian hair) My girlfriend who had bald spots and previous breakage from Great Lengths just switched to the same cold fusion method but with 808 brand hair, and it is unbelievable too! Cold fusion just means they use some sort of earring backing size metal tube to thread your hair through, then also thread the extension hair through, then clamp shut with this pliers looking device. No heat, glue, or damage is involved! Now, some brands use different sized metal tubes, some are silicone lined, some are much bigger, and some are very tiny, it all depends on your particular hair. I HATED Hairlocs brand. (But that's just me!)

Let me know if I can help in any way, I've had every type of hair extension under the sun.

I'm using microlink extensions. My real hair is very straight and fine hair. I just feel so ugly now because of this. I am torn between having them removed and leaving them in because I can't stand the thought of not having long hair especially for work. When I have clip ins they were a whole hair piece type so maybe if i try the individual clip ins i work have more luck? the other one was too heavy and because my hair is fine u could see the clip in underneath my hair.

this sounds like my microlink ones. they are little metal things that they put on with pliers.

my hair went thin from micro loops from the hair dresser pulling my hair when she removed/tightened them...thats why i use wefts now, it still pulls but doesnt break anywhere near as much as the micro loops, but i think you mentioned youve had these and they were itchy or something?

hmm maybe try clip ins...i had them when i first started and they were pretty natural looking..

I Agree the weft didn't damage my hair really at all. I had a constant headache from the weight of it. I have a really small head LOL so most weft pieces are just huge on me!!
Did u get any bald spots? did they grow back?

yeh I've never bleached my whole hair. I only get foils and only either a half head or just the top. I leave all the underneath my natural colour.

Cold Fusion and Microlinks are essentially the same thing.

Jazaine, it sounds to me like you really like the strand by strand method of would prefer that over clip ins, so my advice to you would be to have all of these removed and find a new a hair stylist to install a brand new set. It sounds like either this guy is not putting them in right (how I described in my first post about matching the hair type and thickness) or using some sort of brand of the tiny metal tubes that are snagging your hair. Remember, different brands use different types of metal for the bonds. The first time I had microlinks installed, I ended up with bald patches (only a few) near my temples. The second time I had them installed, they caused absolutely no damage whatsoever, and actually helped me grow out my hair long like it is today. I think this is due to the fact that when it had been a few weeks and the bonds were loosening, they would slide right out instead of yanking my hair out at the root (because of the type of metal used for the bonds)

You see, your hair grows in cycles and sheds accordingly. You don't have one strand of hair that just grows and grows, eventually your head will "let go" of that strand, and a new baby hair will pop up next to it, I'm attaching an illustration to further explain this. So, once most of your own hairs have shed, it leaves very little hair holding on to the extension hair. Have you ever looked at one that came out on it's own after a few weeks? You'll notice a few of your own hairs that shed and are maybe wrapped around the little metal bond, even though it slid out and you don't actually feel like it pulled out any of your own hair. That's because those are hairs you would've shed naturally. Sometimes you will hear hair stylists talk about hair extensions "matting" or getting "matted", this is what they're talking about. Look at your hairbrush, ever notice all that hair that builds up in there? Well, when you have extensions, your hair is "locked in" by the bonds so you are unable to shed it. Now, once it's been a while, and you have very little of your own hair holding on to the extension hair, it is much more likely to pull out at the root due to the tension and weight.

So, in conclusion, it would help you tremendously to get them moved up more frequently.

Now, since you have fine hair I would HIGHLY recommend making your own clip ins, or buying some that come in multiple pieces. As a fellow fine haired lady, I did not prefer the clip in that were all one giant piece. Here's a video of how to make your own multiple piece weft clip ins: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXbkhsfZnYc

Not only can you customize them to fit your head, but you can also customize the thickness, placement, etc. I highly recommend making your own, you save a TON of money, and it's EASY!!!

    Hope all this helped!

Wow, that image came out tiny! Here's a link to a larger version: http://www.cybermane.com/images/strands.bmp

This will show you how your extensions look at around 8 weeks, 10 weeks, and 16 weeks, and how you are at risk for bald spots when you wait a long time.

Wow thanks JD that illustration really explains it. I knew about the shedding but didnt realise that only a small amount of hair ends up holding the weight of the extensions. Makes a lot more sense now.

I get them moved up every 5 weeks and then every second time they move them to a different spot.

I also have a bald spot near my temple (like u said u did).

Thanks very much for your reply. I think I might try to make my own clip in ones. I am getting sick of the feeling of the extensions and I hate how it looks when I tie my hair back in a pony tail u can see all the metal tubes.

I had great lengths for six weeks and had to take them out because they actually were ripping my hair out and they were stuck in the bonds. it wasnt natural shedding because half the hairs had no bulbs. I got them out immediately and I do believe she shouls have cut the bonds in threes and I would have been ok but I am not willing to risk it again. Like you jaizine I got them because I had super long hair that had broken and shorten from color overlap. So 4 months latter my hair still doesnt look the same. Its bra length but 30% thinner than it was. Also I had someone put three microlinks in and those were worse and sharp as hell. The only thing I would reccomend is get them out immediately and get yourself some foxylocks clip in extensions they are uk based and you can go on youtube and check them out. The girl who owns he company has tons of tutorials on them and they look better than most bonded extensions ive seen!

umm i didnt get bald patches from my micro loops but it took out a lot of my hair whenever i had them removed/tightened..so i guess that's similar..hmm what about if you get 2 rows of wefts instead of 3?

i went to a new hairdresser and im sooo happy with my new wefts now, theyre still tight 3 weeks later!! though i had a headache for first 2 days from the tightness, theyre soo soft too

find a new stylist. i have fine hair naturally, have bleached the bejeezus out of it, and the microlinks are not ripping my hair out.

if your stylist put them in incorrectly it will do it. some stylists dont give a fuck about what happens to your hair... ive bad bad stylists overbleach my hair, burn the top of my ear when answering a phone call and putting in fusions, and put in some extensions too tightly so it pulled out hair. the stylist i found recently is the best, and getting the microlinks in was painless compared to my other extension experiences that involved much yanking... she was gentle and attentive (on a side note, if anyone in NOLA needs extensions PM me so i can direct you to her. finding a good extension stylist can be hard).

So ya, i would find a new one. make sure you talk to them and feel comfortable with them BEFORE you order any hair or let them touch your hair. i would also try to throw out a few questions to make sure they know what they are talking about. and ask to see pictures.

and i would go to the new stylist with your current extensions in. microlinks need a special tool to take htem out anyway... chances are if your previous stylist was incompetent enough to cause some hair to get ripped out to the extent you described, he will not be very gentle when removing them and will rip more hair out. a new stylist can look at your situation and tell you what is best for you. also, if they are a good stylist htey will take them out carefully too so they dont rip out more hair than is necessary.

good luck finding a good stylist. they are hard to find. i would PM girls in your area to try to get recommendations.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

My friend had this happen to her (bald patches and hair that was shorter because of breakage) I would purchase a fall, your natural hair you put in a small bun at the nape of your neck and then the front part of your hair (bangs and the hair to your ears) is left out. Honestly this helped my friend soooo much, she dyes her hair platinum blonde and since taking out her extensions has had no breakage. I would stay away from extensions (especially having them in for years at a time) maybe next time you do them color your hair so you are not bleaching it leaving it weak and susceptible to breakage. I personal wear clip in's (which my friend tried and still had breakage) I think these are a little bit better because you can take them out at night or not put them in on your days off and you don't have that constant stress at the root of your hair. I know they can be a little tricky at first but I love them and have very healthy long hair from never getting fusion, micro, ect extensions. Also purchase hair and nail vitamins this also helps

i had to have my hair cut because of damage from extensions and it made me feel so horrible, i would suggest taking multivitimins for pregant women and also massaging your head every day to increase circulation(i use a hand held electric back massager), my hair certainly grew alot faster and is actualy at a decent length now.

About 4 yrs ago I went through the same nightmare. Someone recommended I rub this into my scalp every nigtht. It smells minty and pleasant. Nexxus (VitaTress) Biotin scalp-creme .There is the number 2 in a little purple box on the corner of the tube, and below it, it says nutrient rich treatment contains DHT inhibitors &stimulating botanicals. I found it online, (never saw it in stores) I bought tons of it at the time because I didn't want them to stop making it, they are 2.1oz size tubes. Believe me it took time, but I had like 20 little patches of nothing, and she told me the same shit-oh! its stress, or you are not eating enough totally bs. now I have a full head of hair, be patient it will grow back. I had to wear my hair up every freaking day for almost one yr, and was so tempted to get hair put in, but I know that would only make things worse.Good Luck!!
