    Default low carb/south beach

I am sure this topic has been talked about alot. I am just curious how many of you eat just protein and vegtables and the occasional fruit. Bascially, I have been struggling with bulimia for a while, and I really need to get serious about my health. I went to a nutrionist, and she gave me a meal plan to follow. My sister said it sounds like the old school Mayo Clinic diet. Plain Black coffee, half a grapefruit, and 2 eggs for breakfast. Pretty much the same goes for lunch and dinner, protein, veg- they want you to eat half a gf, or small gf juice just before the meal. No bread, rice pasta-carbs etc. for 2 weeks. At this point I will give anything a shot. I was doing vegan, and basically starved myself, I have a tendency to go to extremes even though I know it isn't healthy. I workout 1 1/2 hours 3 to 4 days, (eliptical for 45 min and then do weights alternating upper and lower body), and try to do pilates 2 times a week. I dance just 2 nights a week right now because of babysitting issues. Basically I am exhausted all the time. Any advice would be appreciated.

The coffee is basically in there because of the caffeine.

You don't need some crazy diet developed to help people lose massive weight before surgery to get healthy. Moderation is key. Research how much protein your body needs and go from there.

Portion control is important. Remember, a serving of meat is the size of a deck of cards, not a 12oz steak. I'm vegetarian, but am a huge fish advocate. Eat on smaller plates so it gives the illusion of more food. There is nothing wrong with carbs as long as you're not eating pasta every single night.

I've done the south beach before, and was doing up until the new year when I fell off the wagon. I am fixing to get back on it this weekend. It's ok as diets go. Not too hard but gets boring quickly. It is a healthy way to lose weight, especially once you're past phase one.

you may be working out more than your body can recover from given your current diet.

i don't know what to tell you about eating, i eat a paleo diet that happens to be low-carb simply because i eat mostly meat from healthy, hormone-free, antibiotic-free animals. but 'paleo' just means eating mostly sustainable, organic, preferably local whole foods, and avoiding grains/legumes unless you've researched their preparation in pastoral societies.

it works for me because i feel more full on less food and don't have to count calories. so you could say i eat a moderate protein, high fat, low carb diet and, well, i have no energy problems.

also i supplement with vitamin d and omega-3. most american women are deficient to some degree and don't know it, so supplementing with fish oil capsules can often really help with exhaustion issues.

i would focus on simply getting the best quality food you can afford and then working on portion control if it is a problem. many people find they eat somewhat less when the food is of good quality. plus you'll get better absorption of nutrients, which will also help you get healthier.

if you don't put good fuel in, it is much harder to keep from getting worn out with exercise.

in the meantime, you could also try shorter, full-body lifting sessions of 15 minutes 2-3 times a week (deadlifting, pullups, stuff like that) and maybe drop one of the long sessions.

Are u vegetarian? is that the reason for no meat?
I eat a high protein, low carb diet constantly and follow a strict gym regime.

If you are not vegetarian you should be eating lean meats with the vegetables. You can also have one cup of steamed rice with your meals.

The eggs in the morning I wouldnt have every morning, maybe once or twice a week and only the whites of the eggs to be eaten.
YOu could make an omlette using just the egg whites too.

Don't eat too much fruit as it contains sugar and while natural sugars they are still full of energy and not good when u r trying to loose weight.

Another good breakfast is one cup of oats with a tiny amount of skim milk and cinnamon.

Snacks can be a piece of fruit, a handful of nuts or a protein shake (make sure it's low in sugar and carbs).

You should aim to eat every 2-3 hours to keep your metabolism high.

The amount of exercise you are doing, if you do not eat like this your muscles will starve and waste away which in turn leads to a higher percentage of body fat. I have also battled bulimia so I understand your concerns about eating frequent meals and it might seem like a lot of food but it turns the body into a lean, fat burning machine.

    Any more questions just ask!!

Some of the most effortlessly beautiful, kind, intelligent, successful, motivated, driven and ridiculously hilarious women that I have ever met have been dancers. I've met the best friends that I've ever had in this industry.

ok, this is one former bulimic talking to a recovering bulimic.
I was bulimic my teen age years. I would throw up 1 to 4 times a day. this is classified as "borderline" since I was just a light case. some girls throw up 17 times. I had one friend that would eat a strawberry and feel guilty and throw it up.

Eventually my family discovered my eating disorder. But that did not stop me. a year later, my friend told me that if he was strong enough to come out and tell his very traditional family that he was gay, I should call a doctor and ask for help. Since I had a very good support/ buddy system I agreed and I called up the doctor.

During the treatment I had to see three ppl, and by the way, this was under my parents' insurance.
I saw a nutritionist, whom I hated, a psychologist and the family doctor for a ten week session. My frumpy nutritionist also worked for Cornell University. She prescribed me a diet plan (like yours) and I gained weight. As soon as I saw this weight gain, I stopped going and stopped the treatment sessions. and my bulimia continued, even though I wanted it to stop. I hated myself, and was angry with myself.
Not until later did I realize my metabolism was so bad, a normal/healthy diet at that point would still make me gain weight.

I started to analyze exactly what I thought about when I was throwing up. Was I really throwing up food or was I throwing up something else. My psychologist recommended I look into it, because bulimia is more mental/emotional than anything. I focused on the thoughts that were going through my head when I was throwing up. Every time, my throat would hurt and scar up and my eyes would get puffy and blood shot. Instead of focusing on not making a mess, not getting discovered, nor hurting too bad while throwing up, I focused on the angry negative thoughts in my head at that time.

all the advice above is awesome, but when you yo-yo to extremes, you need to take many steps back and analyze your self-hatred/self-love, ideal body image vs current state, and this is what helped me get over my bulimia in the long term.

Anger management - write down your negative stuff in your life, with yourself, your peers, your environment. list the things that are out of your control. is this perhaps what fuels your purge/ your aggression when vomiting?

list your strength, weaknesses, opportunities, and thread in life, with work, with family, with yourself. try to avoid all the threads and try to turn all the weaknesses into strengths. I love turning my weaknesses into strengths. This is called a SWOT analysis and used in business mgmt. I am a business major, so instead of doing this assessment for a company/product/service, I assess myself, or my meal, or my next date, or getting a pet, or anything.

Stop being so hard on yourself - when the guilt kicks in, ask yourself if you can stop the negative self-talk. remind yourself of how wonderful you are and how far you have come. guilt is for nuns.

forgive yourself - again, forgive yourself for hurting your body and tell your body that you will put good things in it, no toxins

(It took me a little over a year of eating or attempting to as normal and healthy as I could to finally regain my metabolism).

    - make is a fun and happy event of eating a diet that will give you the best natural energy and that you like AND fits into your schedule. You know what's healthy and what isn't so I don't need to tell you that you should do the raw diet, or a diet high in lean protein, h2o, fiber and healthy fats such as avocado, nuts, and olive oil. try to cut out all simple carbs and sugars. you know all this.

    - Because I know that I am prone to the bulimic mindset, I allow myself to eat anything that I feel like as long as I only have ONE TO THREE bites, then I push it away and put salt on the dish/desert or my dirty napkin. If I am really craving that brownie or guacamole, I will order it. if I do not say ok to my immediate cravings they will build up and lead to massive crazy binges, followed by a few days of anorexia. that is the trick for me. stopping myself on overeating to the point where I feel self-hatred and disgust. where is that line for you? after a bagel, or two or six? You have to draw that line and imagine the consequences before they happen. not allowing the binge/purge to happen is therefor crucial. I think this was the hardest part for me, because I was soo fixated on the moment, my own private moment.

if you have a relapse, either bulimia, anorexia, or binging, RELAX!!! this happens and is expected to happen. It is easy to go back to old habits. You already made a giant step by reaching out for advice.

looking over your message again, and trying to put myself into your shoes, I would say you are being way to hard on yourself. If you feel burnt out and depleted at the end of the day you need to make yourself a nice cup of tea or something and just sit back and relax. you need more down town time and you time. Are you able to take a break from life without feeling lazy (which makes some feel very, very guilty)?
