Default Tanning Lotions in The US - Recommendations Please?

I'm coming over to work in the United States in April and I'll be there for about 4 or 5 months. I'm going to be doing a lot of photoshoots and so I need to keep a good even tan. I won't have time for Tanning Studios or actually getting out in the Sun.

Here in the UK, I use either Johnson's 'Holiday Skin' and 'Summer Sun' - or Garnier 'Summer Body', both of which are ideal for my fair skin - and contain moisturisers as well. They come in 400ml bottles.

Looking at your stores on the Internet - like Walmart, K-Mart etc I can't find stocks of either of them. I have found Hawaiian Tropic, which seems to be popular and reasonably priced - and L'Oreal, which I have used in the past, but Garnier gives me a nicer colour.

I'm looking for a lotion - not a spray - which gives an even, light-ish gold tan and won't give me 'elephant skin' on my ankles or wrists! I have fair, sensitive skin so I need a moisturiser too.

I'm going to be based in North Carolina - but travelling to the Virginia's, Maryland, Florida, Alabama and Texas too. Can anyone recommend a Store/s that stocks good brands - and how much should I expect to pay for a 400ml bottle?

Some of the most common drug stores are CVS, Rite-Aid, and Walgreen's. The CVS has some 24 hour locations here and there, as well as the Walgreens too. This might be helpful since you're traveling and on the go. You'll have to check their websites to see which ones are though on their store locators.

I might not be too much help with lotions since I tend to like more of the darker formulas. I can speak highly of the L'oreal sublime bronze as far as moisture goes. It's always given me an even tan and has vitamin E. (I should probably also mention that some of the formulas for this line have an instant bronzer on them. I'm not sure if that part is an issue for you if you're worried about it coming off on clothes or not).

Oh yeah, for price, I would guesstimate between 7.99 to 9.99 + tax depending on the area.

THANK YOU! That's really useful. I've looked at all those stores and between them they have branches in Edenton and Elizabeth City which is where I'll be staying in NC.

Most do L'Oreal...which is fine for me. They also do Hawaiian Tropic, Banana Boat - and Neutrogena, which I have also used before. One (CVS) actually stocks 'Boots No.7' which I used for years before Garnier!

    I'm very grateful to you.

I always rub down with Palmer's Cocoa Butter before I put on any kind of tanning lotion - I find that it helps prevent streaking and the lotion absorbs more evenly.

As far as tanning lotions go, I prefer Kiehl's Sunless Self-Tanner lotion. The bottle's small but the lotion is very thin and a little will go a long way. I'm naturally pasty pale and one application of this will give me a healthy glow within 3 hours. I would make sure you exfoliate though, because I forgot to and my ankles turned pretty dark.

When it comes to drugstore brands, I use Jergen's Firming Self-Tanner. You can find them in increments of fair, medium and dark, with accompanying facial lotions. It can take about half a week to start to see results, though.

I also have to say Loreal Sublime Bronze. I have naturally olive ish skin tones and I use this one: http://www.drugstore.com/qxp90322_33...atural_tan.htm

They offer different formulas, like a lotion or gel application, and also for fair, medium, and dark skin tones, so you have many options. I really love this one, you can find it anywhere and it gives a nice natural color.

Also, for fairer skin, I recommend Neutrogena Sun Fresh: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html...t_adv_XSG10001

This gave me a much lighter, natural color, so you may like this better. The Loreal one is much more dramatic.

Both of these can be found at Walmart, Target, CVS, Walgreens, or basically any commercial store around you, so very convenient and easy to find!

I use Jergens Natural Glow; it's a gradual tanner so I apply it before bed. I didn't like the Vaseline gradual tanner.

^^^ If I tan with lotion the Jergens Natural Glow is what I use. I mix it with regular lotion too. I have yet to find a tanner (even gradual) that doesn't streak - so for me mixing it with regular lotion is key.

im pale as fuck naturally (look thru the picture post with me with blue hair if you dont believe me)... but i can get a nice color (look at my avatar).

if you feel like getting a super fabulous tan and are willing to order off teh interwebz, my number one recommendation is sunlabs... that stuff is awesome. there are many old posts on it if you do a search. this gives me the nicest color by far.

if you are only willing to work with drugstore products... i also vote sublime bronze. however, if you can find the sublime bronze without hte tint you will be better off. the one with the tint is sticky and glittery! I find that the one without tint is really not difficult to apply, i use rubber gloves to do it and just rub it in like lotion and it is fine. just make sure you exfoliate/shave first. i use this stuff when i dont feel like dealing with the tint; sunlabs has a brown tint, and it will sometimes rub off on things/ clothes (Dont wear white until you rinse it off!)
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

^ +1 on the sunlabs, like Athena said! That stuff is amazing, best sunless tanner I've ever used.

My second favorite is the St. Tropez sunless tanning mousse. Gives very natural results.
