Default Woo hoo! I got in!

Hey hey! As some of you know, I am a huge animal lover and want to become a Veterinarian. Well I found out today I got accepted into Veterinary Science at the University I wanted. Yay! I am so excited. My whole life has been on hold waiting to hear if I would get in and I was totally prepping myself to be denied. But great success! I'm in! I start this march and it is a 5 year program. And then you can all call me Dr. Jessie..hahaha.

I'm a little nervous because it's been almost 5 years since I graduated University the first time and I have done nothing even remotely academic since. So I'm thinking I'll be a bit of a headcase.

On a no so exciting note...this means I will most likely be shaking my bootie for another 5 years.

    Congratulations!

I took a few years in between undergrad and grad work... I was concerned that I had forgotten how to be a student. It's like riding a bicyce. After a few weeks, it will be routine again.

    I adore animals!!!!!

As for getting back into study u will be fine. I only had a year off between degrees but it's like riding a bike!! Plus those of us who are academic just slide right back into it I find.

Wow, congrats! I interviewed for vet school a few years ago but wasn't accepted. How was it interviewing after so many years out of university? Have you been volunteering a lot in animal related fields?

You must be so excited to start!

HUGE congrats!! For those that dont know...its 100x more difficult to get into vet school then medical school. There are only a handful in the entire country and something like 500 applicants for every one spot available!

    So this is HUGE.

I was a tech for years and the original plan was to go on to vet school. But I got burnt out and was just so afraid of not getting accepted..I dont even know why...that I never applied.

I'd like to now, but I dont think years of more school is in me at my age.

I WILL be needing a licensed vet eventually (many actually all over the world!) once my non-profit is up and running(should be up this year actually since it looks like I have found an investor). By the time you get done with school i will for sure be in the red enough to hire you....so you may very well have a job working for my rescue when you are done!

Congratulations, Jessie! I hope that you celebrate and do so in STYLE! I love hearing things like this: That dreams really do and can come true.

I've accomplished quite a bit academically as well (but I'm no future,M.D., rock on!) ---and there are a few more goals I'd like to see realized in a few years' time.

Your post gives me the motivation to keep on keepin' on.

    Wishing you continued success,

I could only apply at one University because it is the only one in Sydney. There is one other in my state, but it's far away and since my hubby works in Sydney, if I didn't get in here I'd be SOL. There was no entrance interview. They just look at your highschool transcript (lol yes highschool even though that was 10 years ago), university transcript, experience and references (I volunteer with a wildlife rescue org, RSPCA, and a friend of mine let me observe some surgeries and consultations), and a national test that looks at your number and literacy skills. Doing that test was intense after not writing one in so long. I literally had to just guess on the last 10 questions because I ran out of time. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be. My result was the part I was most worried about. I did well on it, but it is really hard to get into so I didn't know if it would be enough.

Thanks Ya I'm in Australia, but it is the same here. Harder than med school apparently. I really didn't think I would get in either. Being 27 I was not really keen on 5 years at first either. I was thinking of doing vet nursing and my husband was like, "why don't you become a vet? You are smart." I was like, "No way. I'd never get in." He just encouraged me to go for it. What's the worst that happens? You don't get in. T

The awesome part is the degree is recognized anywhere I'd want to live too, canada, US, UK. I'd love to work for an animal rescue organization! That is awesome. Good luck with your investor. Keep us posted.

We study large and small. Yep I'll be sticking my hand in a cows bum. I have to do some of my internship on a farm. LOL. I am so not a farm girl, but not afraid of blood, guts and bodily functions. I'm more interested in companion animals since that's where my experience is, but I have an open mind for large. There is a lot of opportunity and money in equine medicine so I'm interested to learn more in that area. There is also a huge specialist vet clinic in Sydney that looks amazing. Would love to specialize later in life (getting a little ahead lol) because they do some amazing surgeries there. Exotic and Zoo would be awesome as well. I'm not a fan of the zoo here (I think the enclosures are a bit small) but they have a show called "the zoo" and you get to see what the keepers and vets do. It's mega interesting.

Oh it will be alot more than your hand!!!!!! you will wish for a longer arm! There is satisfaction in pulling a stuck calf from a heifer even if it takes a come along! On your continent you have many interesting creatures so some are going to envy you cuddling koalas and such.

    again congrats!

Oh my god that’s so exciting! I'm really happy for you. It's actually been something I've been thinking about doing myself. Did you get really good grades in high school? My grades in high school and my first few years of college were crap but the school I'm looking at only takes the prerequisites into account while determining your GPA.

Oh an in my experience school is actually better after you take a few years off. It makes you appreciate what a privilege learning is.

I will def keep ya'll updated!

One of the hospitals I worked at also worked with the local zoo(which was a pretty good one). So I got the chance to work on several very cool animals! We also worked with local wildlife people so I've done surgery on several hawks and ospreys and such.

I'd love to see that show! Is it on DVD anywhere?

I had good high school marks but not high enough to get in on them alone. You need a 98% average for highschool. I only had 93%. For your University/college marks this school looks at your average because there are no specific prerequisites. Here they do not use the same grading system as America. They use a fail, pass, credit, distinction, high distinction grading. There is a distinction minimum to get accepted with is 75% and up. I had high distinction (85%). They just say you need chemisty, bio, physics and math and if you don't have them, you are not likely to succeed. You don't need a full degree to apply, just one year, but if you have done more than one year or a full degree they will look at the GPA. Most people will just do 1st year science and apply from there again. The STAT test is good too because it has a literacy component so it basically stops people who are really strong in math and science, but who cannot speak english or with weak language skills from getting in.
