Default This really works for getting rid of back/knee pain!

So I've been dancing for about 8 months now and, like many of you, have been suffering from chronic pain in my knees and lower back. I've been doing yoga for several months now and it helps mitigate the pain but doesn't reverse the damage. I was distressed about this, as I'm sure most of you are, and was beginning to fear that my body would be permanently damaged.

Recently I learned about a more intense form of yoga-Bikram yoga. It takes place in a studio heated to 100+ degrees, and the postures are all designed to heal and repair the body from the inside out. The guy it is named after, Bikram, was a yoga champion who designed the discipline after his knee was crippled in an accident.

Normally I'm not one to buy into "miracle cures" which lack backing by the medical community, but this stuff REALLY WORKS! I've been to three classes so far and my knees feel about 95% better. About 1/3 of the postures involve standing on one leg with the knees locked and it really strengthens the knee and improves alignment. A number of the postures also compress and decompress the spine. It's even helping me heal a few other athletic injuries that I've picked up on the job and haven't been able to heal naturally due to repetitive motion.

I would highly recommend this for anyone on here who has chronic pain from dancing, or old injuries that haven't healed properly. You can check out the website and see if there is a licensed studio in your area, as well as learn more about it. Try it!!!!

Is it hard if youve never done yoga before? My bf tried to get me to go but I chickened out cause I thought it sounded too intense.

It's hard, but basically you just go as far into the position as you can reach without hurting yourself or ruining your alignment. The heat is scary the first couple times but it feels soooo good afterwards!

I used to do this regularly until the teachers got a job elsewhere and moved away. I loved it, I loved the heat and the intensity of the yoga. I made sure I went to the quieter classes though, went to a full class once and I was almost shoulder to shoulder with two sweaty old people

    I miss it.

I spent most of my life being one of those macho idiot who made fun of yoga. After a recent traumatic knee injury I was told to start doing ashtanga yoga at the end of my physio cycle, and I realized what I had foolishly missed my entire life. It's a complete physical realignment, from your skeletal structure to your internal organs. Absolutely unreal!

I am a Bikram Yoga Instructor and have practiced the yoga for about 7 years, taught it for 1 year now . I have been dancing for about 6 yrs now. I will tell you as long as I practice my yoga regularly my shoulder and back and knee all stay pretty balanced and pain free for the most part. If I let life or work get int the way of my practice I deal with some pretty sharp pain especially if I am over zealous on the pole! My decrease in pain and discomfort is directly related to my yoga practice level. In addition the all over complete results to your body, muscle tone flexibility and strength could not in my exp. be acheived any other way in such a compleate package. It is all inclusive. Then, by default, it helps me balance and ground decreasing my anxiety, and stress enourmously. Helps me mentally at work as well. Feel free to ask me questions about the series!

I have been meaning to try this out! After saying how much it helps with knee problems, I'm totally sold. The only thing I'm worried about is the heat... I overheat and get sick really easily so that might be a problem. I'm gonna check it out anyway since there's a studio near my house.

It is an amaaazing workout. Talk about a thorough workout!!! Only problem is, I dislike the heat and it makes my rosacea worse. I am not willing to go about my daily life with a purple/red face. I would do Bikrams and have a red face for three days. Also, I usually left feeling like I had been hit by a truck and had no energy for the rest of the day. Me and heat don't mix.

Now I just do regular yoga

But, I highly recommend people give it a try. Because when it's good, it's REALLY good.

I have tried Bikram yoga and agree it's great for working out any imbalances in your body due to dancing. Like several have said, the heat is usually too much for me to handle. I've found that other types of yoga are effective for my aches and pains too. Now that I'm back in the lucite platforms, I've made a commitment to myself to get back into a consistent yoga practice. I went to a Baron Baptiste-style Power Yoga class this morning and my body is MUCH happier already, especially since this was my first week back to dancing after a 3-year hiatus.

I think yoga's great, if not essential, for anyone who wants longevity in their stripper career!

Ok so I wanted to update this thread because some incredible things happened to my knee today in class.

Most of my knee problems have worked themselves out by now, my right knee feels pretty much fine-but my left knee has had this nagging painful/weak spot at the top of the kneecap. I don't know too much about anatomy but my guess is that I had strained one of the ligaments to the point where it was unable to snap back into place. My knee has been weak here for months, and my left kneecap has been "loose"-the right one doesn't wobble too much even if you push on it hard, but the left one has been easy to push out of place with a finger.

Today in class I lay down in savasana after the standing series was over, and I just immediately felt this tingling in my knee. It was extreme discomfort-but the good kind. The kind where you can teal that the pain is from your body healing. All throughout the rest of the class I could feel it tingle, and I was able to move it through the poses just as well as my right knee/leg. Now that I'm home it feels SO FUCKING GOOD! Just like a normal, healthy knee again. There's still a little twinge of discomfort but I can tell something really important and positive happened to it. I've been feeling giddy all night because of the sensation of relief.

Ladies, you need to try this! It is a freaking wonderful solution to stripper-body-damage!

I've been dancing for five years and doing Bikram for three now.

Since Bikram, I lost 20 pounds (146 to the mid 120's). I toned my core. I improved my cardiovascular health and quit smoking my favorite american spirits smokes. I also got my insomnia under control, since after the work out, you sleep like a baby. I find my inner center and meditate while doing yoga. I feel peaceful. Whereas at work I feel restless. It keeps me nice and toned, but I do dance nearly full time, so it's hard to say which effects what.

Aside from the long term benefits, Bikram massages my muscles and gets rid of any knots, pulled muscles, scared muscle tissue. I am more flexible so I can do a better stage performance. At one point I over-extended my forearm doing a pole trick (like the tennis arm thing) and one of the 26 poses during the Bikram yoga series took care of that as well.

I hope that this helped inspire someone to try it.

and oh, did I say you burn 700 to 900 calories?
