Default Just a reminder re: allergic reactions!

Ladies, always remember that an allergic reaction is NEVER THE SAME TWICE. Just because you got hives the first time, or mild swelling, doesn't mean it will be the same the next time around.

I had an accidental exposure yesterday to a substance that has caused moderate reactions in the past and nearly died yesterday morning. Within fifteen minutes my face and lips swelled up, my body turned deep red and burned like I was on fire, and I blacked out several times. I was barely lucid enough to call 911 and spent six hours in the hospital emergency department. My blood pressure dropped to 70/35 and they had a hard time getting it back up. My hands swelled up to the point my fingertips turned deep purple and my nail beds were dusky. I was given adrenaline, IV steroids and god knows what else. (P.S. IV steroids hurt like a BITCH.) J was so worried he left a business meeting and forced them to transfer his call to me.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE be VIGILANT and KNOWLEDGEABLE about your allergies and reactions. DO NOT for example, eat something you think will just give you a few hives and medicate it with Benedryl. I know from now on I will not be allowing this substance in my household AT ALL, and will be getting a medic alert bracelet. Allergies can change at the drop of a hat as we age!

Be well everyone, and learn from my mistake!

I have a good friend with a severe seafood allergy and she nearly died in 2008 due to a strong reaction. Mediocrity, do carry an Epi-pen now? You know, just in case you have an accidental exposure?

It was coconut. I am deathly allergic to coconut.

Oh my goodness, how scary! Glad you are ok though.

This makes me think twice about eating avocado. I have a very mild allergy (my lips swell and burn a bit) but I love them so much I just keep eating them.

Was your previous reactions to coconut severe or mild up until this incident?

^^ I haven't had an exposure in about seven years but it's always been pretty bad. This was a MINUTE exposure, believe me- and I almost bought the farm.

Wow, so you didn't even eat it?

Allergies that bad are so scary. I had a friend who stepped on a bee while we where golfing drunk and didn't realize. All the sudden his tongue swelled up and he started to drool and got really incoherent. We had no idea what was happening and had to rush him to ER. I want to cry now just thinking about it.

Did they give you an epi-pen just in case it ever happens again? What if a girl at work is wearing coconut body lotion or spray?

No, I didn't get an epi pen. And it has to be real coconut. Most of those don't contain real coconut. I didn't eat it, it was merely a very slight amount on my face. VERY slight.

At least you don't have to worry about the lotion thing. But anyone with an allergy that bad to anything should carry an epi-pen, just in case.

I've never heard of a coconut allergy! I didn't know there was such a thing, but I suppose a person could be allergic to anything. That must have been terrifying.

I don't have a food allergy, I have an allergy to bug bites/stings, and carry an epi-pen for it. You should probably consider getting one - I got mine in a drug store in Canada without a prescription - I'm not sure what it's like to get one down here though....Just to keep in your car/purse just in case....

this just reminds me to be grateful that while I can no longer eat my favorite foods, I'm intolerant and not allergic and there's a big difference. I'm intolerant to gluten and if I eat it, it wreaks havoc on my system but it's certainly not life or death. Glad to hear you're okay, that sounds scary.

Coconut is one of my favorite scents, so I decided to go look through the ingredients of some of my lotions, body spays and hair products.

At least four of them do contain coconut, so be careful! Not sure if it would be enough to cause a reaction, but there are always those girls that put lotion and body spray on in the dressing room, so I just wanted to give you a heads up.
