    Default Cold Sore Remedy?

Well, along with being dreadfully ill for the past half week, I've now developed a coldsore.

I get them about twice a year, and carmex just doesn't cut it for me. I take L-Lysine pills to make them go away faster, but does anyone have any hints to lower pain or size??

    This sucks, man

green tea & peppermint tea really help. You can also do a peppermint tea compress. It really works. I had the biggest one ever just three weeks ago, & was amazed at how fast it went away. For the for drinking, I'd recommend tazo zen tea. It's a green tea with mint in it. You could do a compress with it too, but I found straight mint tea worked better for the compress.

I'm sure you know this, but I have to say it: they are extremely contagious. Please be careful. I wouldn't wish cold sores on my worst enemy; they're horrible.

I only get them maybe once a year...
The last two times I used peroxide to clean them and then alcohol to dry them out... and they never even got big enough to be seen from closer than three feet or so.

Cold sores usually develop if you're tired and run down. Cold sores are caused by a virus - so helping build up your body's natural defences is the best prevention.

Try to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables...and drink lots of water to hydrate your skin.

To treat the infected sore - 'TCP' antiseptic cream - made by ICI and available from any Pharmacist - works absolute wonders. Dab it on with cotton wool - you'll smell like a Hospital for 24 hours but it will kill the bacteria and help shrink and dry out the blister.

It beats all the other Brands hands down!

I've used Abreva, but it is very expensive. It works super fast, like the cold sore is gone in less than 24 hours.

Acyclovir helps it heal fast. They are prescription pills in the US, but you can get them for like $10 at Walmart after being prescribed. Start taking them when you feel one coming on, and they can help future breakouts.

For current..tea tree oil can dry it out and disinfect it, but it smells really strong. Also , I got some tube of something called NexCare last time I had one, and I think it helped.

Once its dried out and scabbed over, make sure you moisturize it to help the scab break down, and to heal. Or you'll get a scar.

me either. In fact, abreva makes it take longer for mine to heal. Try the tea, & hydrogen peroxide. It freaking works.

yes! Lemon balm rules, but I agree, it can be hard to find. It is part of the mint family. I'm planning on growing my own this year to make ointments & tictures as it is quite useful for many things.

vitamin d works for me (20,000 IU daily). cold sores that used to go for ten days, and maybe seven with abreva now are much rarer (used to get them 3-4 times each fall/winter) and last 2 days max.

would something like valtrex maybe help suppress them in the future or no?
seems like it would work but the one thing i've been very lucky about in my life is never having a cold sore. although i used to have enormous painful acne right next to my mouth all the time, so it might as well have been. its so horrific. i could not/did not work like that.

i just love to on top of how horrible it looks, its also fantastically painful as well!
(the acne was, you said the cold sore was too, i can only imagine... there's so many nerve endings around the lips!) hope you find something that helps autumn, because honestly, i found the cure for my acne, that was literally destroying my life for 10yrs, on this site!!

Agree with the Valtrex but have you tried Herpecin? Never had one but I hear it works wonders. That and cold chamomile teabags.

I have a friend on valtrex. It is not only extremely expensive, it makes you sick. If you take valtrex you have to take another drug with it that supposedly is supposed to make you less sick that she says doesn't work, and both are linked to liver dammage.
don't know about herpecin. I gave up on commercial creams for herpes simplex, when none of them worked.

Denavir ! You need to go to a derm to get it ( or have a friend with insurance go request it while they are at the derm if you don't have insurance ) . It's expensive, but it works. If you put it on at the first signs ( tingle phase ) it won't even turn into a sore. It will actually suppress it if you put it on fast enough. Even if you don't get it on fast enough, it will heal much faster with it. I HATE cold sores.

Valtrex has never, ever made me feel sick. It is expensive, but it works really well. I've never tried any other drugs, but valtrex will kill the cold sore before it starts.

I've been getting into homeopathy lately. Not really hardcore, but if it's stuff that I can super easily obtain for cheap or stuff that's likely already around my house, I'll definitely give it a shot. Heck, homeopathy taught me what to do with that old bottle of aspirin I have in my medicine cabinet. Grind it up and rub it in my face!

I do like the simplicity of it. Sometimes you don't need something as strong as a prescription, or sometimes they can be just as effective but much gentler on your body.

Nah they didn't. The moment I felt the tingly phase I used a q-tip and just rubbed a very thin layer of my own earwax on it.

Now before you go "EW" lemme explain: If done super early enough, this can actually prevent the coldsore from forming altogether. I've managed to catch it early enough only twice, but it works! If you're too late but it's still tingly, still do it and the blister won't get nearly as big. Your earwax has natural antibodies that your body produces that it uses to protect your eardrum and inner ear against infection. And you don't need a lot. You won't even see or feel it on there.

But anyway, they're very small, and they don't even really hurt. I also take L-Lysine pills to speed the healing.

I've lived in the deep south for four years, but that's pretty country fried. I don't know if I could do it, but more power to you if it works for you.
let me know if you would like me to do a write up for you. I've used & made my own herbal medicines for just over 20 years now.

The only thing that really works for me is Campho-Phenique, avail. at the drugstore. I find that many things out there have some type of grease in it, which actually keeps the blisters soft, they need drying out, unless you're in the scab stage, when the blisters has broken. What I like is they make one for the blisters, & one for the scab. I used it a few days ago, I felt the tingling on my lips when it comes on, I slathered it on, & it did not come on!
