    Default Itchy Mole

I'm really freaked out, and I'm not sure why I chose this time to think about it.

Long story short - I used to go tanning in beds a lot, one day I noticed that right after (and only right after) tanning, a mole on the side of my foot itched. It was a small, brown mole...one that looks like all of the others on my body.

Fast forward 5 years: the mole still looks the same, and it hasn't itched (or bothered me any any other way) since that one time...

Should I be worried that it's cancerous?

No. The doc is not going to do anything about it unless it is showing signs of changing. But tanning beds do cause malenoma and you really don't want that. The mortality rate is not good and it moves extremely fast (sometimes only a few weeks to death). Tanning years ago has left u open to it (me too) so always keep an eye on any freckles and get a partner to check your skin on your back. But that little mole sounds just fine.

Why don't you go get it scanned just in case?

Color - is the color even or uneven? Uneven color, varying color pink, grey, brown, black, blue, good to get it checked

border - is it round? Or uneven around the border? If uneven, best to get it checked

size - if it's larger then a pencil eraser, best to get it checked.

Changes - has it changed at all, if so best to get it checked

Even if it needs to be checked, that does not mean it's cancerous. Even if it's cancerous, doesn't mean it's a death sentence. Lots of people have weird moles, but it's always good to make sure

    If it's a mole it's harmless.

If it's a wart (more likely) it can be removed by freezing or quarterising.

    If it's anything else.......

You won't know any of the above unless you get it looked at - so please, go see the 'Doc - better safe than sorry.

Everyone (esp those who have exposed their skin to sunbeds) should have freckles and moles checked periodically.

Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancers in the world with 2 in 3 developing the disease in their lifetime. This is a great, informative website:

    http://www.sunsmart.com.au/

Skin cancer can grow when the cells that make up our skin are damaged causing them to grow abnormally.

Each time skin is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, changes take place in the structure and function of our skin cells. Over time, the skin can become permanently damaged and the damage will worsen with each exposure.

Skin cancer is mostly related to the number of severe sunburns, particularly during childhood. But a person's lifetime or ‘cumulative' exposure can also increase their long-term risk of skin cancer.

All skin types can be damaged by exposure to UV radiation. People with skin types that are less likely to burn can still receive enough UV exposure to risk developing skin cancer.

People at higher risk of skin cancer are those who:

previously had a skin cancer and/or have a family history of skin cancer
have a large number of moles on their skin
have a skin type that is sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and burns easily
have a history of severe/blistering sunburns, especially during childhood
spend lots of time outdoors, unprotected, during their lifetime
actively tan or use solariums, sunlamps and sunbeds
    work outdoors.

    A mole or melanoma?
Almost all of us have moles. Moles are not normally present at birth, but appear in childhood and early teenage years. By the age of 15, Australian children have an average of more than 50 moles.

Normal moles usually look alike. See your doctor if a mole looks different or if a new mole appears after the age of 25. The more moles, the higher the risk of melanoma.

^ Jai living in Oz has made me mega paranoid. Everyone read this!!! Remember that poor girl on 60mins that died...

I pretty much have not gone in the sun since I moved here. I have seriously only been to Bondi once. I embrace my twilight worthy skin even though Ive never seen the movies or read the books.
