Default Can I have permission to gloat?

Ok, so I started the post on how strippers are shown in a 'bad light' via the media. And in reality it's rather like that as well. A lot of us hide our jobs from friends and family. Some of us hide our jobs because we don't want random people to pass judgement.

I have been in and out of pole classes for around 8 months. (But I've been pole dancing on my own for over 10 years). I've made one really great friend and a lot of acquaintances, mostly other students.

I was out to dinner w/ some of the women I've met through class or photo shoots. None of them are dancers/strippers/paid pole performers. We're all between the ages of 25-40 something. Here it comes, my gloat: I WAS THE ONLY COLLEGE GRADUATE

I know it's not nice to gloat, but it just felt good w/ some of the negative judgments that have been made towards me over the years because of my job, to be the most academically accomplished person at that table

(One girl, is back in school to finish her degree because she was laid off of her banking job. One of the other girls told her that an education just isn't worth it)

I think you should gloat over that beautiful black kitty in your avatar. It looks just like my stepdad's cat that I can't take even though he just died and I want a cat very badly. No go, though, my lease strictly forbids it.

As far as the education thing goes, I have noticed that the literacy levels are pretty low in the clubs, among the men and women both. I mean what level of literacy--though I have run into managers, DJs, bouncers, and dancers who literally could not read or write numerous times. But here on SW they are pretty high from what I've seen.

You should be rightly proud of what you are, and what you've done Corey. Happiness isn't getting what you want...it's wanting what you've got.

Oh, I LOVE my Pantera! He loves car rides! He even auditioned for a purina commercial! (It's hard to light black cats). He travels w/ me from LA to Vegas to see my parents. They have a huge yard and three animals that he loves to terrorize.

Oh, the people I was with, were not dancers or club employees, but 'civies'. One of the women, totally chastised me at first because I gave lap dances. But at least I finished college. (She didn't. She had a modeling career that was cut short because of physical stuff. But rich parents help her out).

I honestly love the feeling of being one of the most educated people in a crowd. It makes me happy to know I have put in that much effort and know things haha.

In the crowd I run with now, though, I am one of the least educated. boo...but that's what being a teacher will do to you.

LOL! I love it! The only stripper and also the most educated of the group.

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!

It's interesting because all of these women had 'professional ' careers. One is an ER nurse. I guess I wasn't fair, because obviously, she had to go to school for training.

I meant that neither of them had graduated from state colleges or universities. But they all assumed that I hadn't gone to school since I'm dancing.

I am so used to being the smartest person in the club, but believe me I don't publicize it, then people would hate me. But I do have an unfair advantage. Well, not really 'unfair' strictly speaking, but you know what I mean.

Many years toning down the intellectual level of my conversation in Daytona has come in handy, I suppose.

I know for a fact that my intelligence has been detrimental in certain clubs, whether I tried to hide it or not. Some of these managers are morons, quite literally, but just smart enough to know when they are relatively stupid--and they do not like it.

OK slight threadjack, you were describing a non-club situation. But the dynamics can be interesting in either case.

I know plenty of dancers with degrees and I almost have one myself. In fact I know 3 that I work with currently who have 2 degrees.

That being said, like djoser mentioned, I've also met a good deal who were -seriously- dumb. I don't mean handicapped either because I wouldnt count that. I mean just never took it upon themselves to learn anything higher than middle school.

It's sad how prevalent the stereotype is though. A couple months ago a guy literally dropped his jaw because I used the word "ambivalent" to describe how I felt about something. Then he said "wow, ambivalent??? that's impressive"

and the saddest thing is he was being totally serious and when I mentioned being offended that he thought that was a "big word" he got all apologetic and said he meant it as a compliment.

How the fuck is telling me that it's really impressive that I know the word "ambivalent" a compliment???? That's like telling a 30 year old woman "Oh my god, you balanced your checkbook! I'm so proud of you!"

Like you just ASSUMED I was dumb as shit, so me using a word most people learn in High School.. hell probably middle school, was "shocking".

I assume the ones who don't read or write wouldn't be interested in internet forums!

After my first few weeks working at the club, I was telling my friend about how stupid/trashy some of the girls are, and the kind of lame things they fight about in the dressing room. Having browsed through Stripperweb before, she was surprised and said, "Really? Those girls who post online seem so smart and well-spoken and helpful- Are there any of those around?"

And I basically told her, most dancers aren't the type of girl who subscribes to online forums. The ones who do, tend to be the kind to keep to themselves in the dressing room.
