Default Reasons to like/dislike a DJ

...in another thread, Djoser made a comment about DJ's needing to be firm to survive the industry. So i'd like to ask dancers, customers (and DJ's) what "qualities" they like/dislike in a DJ. Such as....

    Like:

    • Skips you on stage (random times) when asked.
    • Will leave the booth to help throw out some out of line customer
    • Plays your type music.
    • Rarely is part of the club drama.
    • Generally pleasant to talk with.

    Dislike:

    • Tries to blackmail you for tips
    • Turns on those damn red stage lights magnifying all the cellulite
    • Will put you up on stage twice as much as most other girls.
    • Calls you to stage when your cash cow arrives.

    This will be fun...

Things I can't stand about (some) DJs:

    1) Those horrible, nasal, whiny voices that were so big in the late 90's, and some people still think sounds good. Only some managers and the guys doing the whining, but that can be enough to perpetuate it.

2} Cheesy, tacky sexual innuendos. Such as that tired old cliche about giving the girls 'something 6" long with a head on it'. Or calling the tiprail 'The Erection Section'. Or announcing how much he would like to be the pole right now, or is available after work for partying with the girl(s) onstage. Shut the fuck up...

    3) Calling every single girl there 'The very beautiful' Binky, or whatever. Come on, pal, they aren't all beautiful, especially in some clubs--all you are doing is showing what a bullshit artist you are. Get a thesaurus. Use it.

BTW, when I say it is vitally necessary to be firm--which it is--I don't mean you have to be a dick (though some DJs are). I mean you have to have mutual respect. I wouldn't make so much more than the minimum tipout wherever I work, if I was a dick all the time. Diplomacy and charm, with an iron will backing it, is the way to go.

    1) I am not allowed to do that. Not even allowed to ask for one, period, at the last club.
    2) I tried to tell the owner in my present club to replace the red plastic caps on the lights with yellow, blue, green, whatthehellever color but red. Over a year ago. It would cost maybe 10-15$ No go. But he asks me to turn up the lights every time he comes in. He's the owner, so I do. They always pick red lights, why I don't know.
    3) I am totally not allowed to do that.
    4) I have no choice but to call them when they are up. They have the option to pay the house--NOT me I can get fired for it--to get skipped. That's the only way unless they are in Champagne Room.

That's the way it's been in my last two clubs, the last 4 years.

    Make a respectful introduction.

Doesn't screw the songs up causing an awkward silence.

Doesn't try to be the show. If I don't notice you, you're doing it right.

    Dislike:

    Ponytails. Ugh.

Forgetting who pays you. The customer brings the money in the door and spreads it around. The owner pays your base rate out of this, and the dancers tip you out of it. Sneering at customers is foolish. Minimum tipouts prevent you from realizing you are working for the girl who is tipping you. But yeah, you are.

Thinking every dude wants to be a DJ/work in a SC. Yeah right.

Arrogant Braggarts. Though I guess you can find these in every line of work.

    Likes:
Those who treat the dancers as doing their job.
    Plays what I want.
Only plays my music for me unless I give him specific info to play for another girl (I've had this happen).

    Dislikes:
When he thinks he's better than dancers.
When he tries to date, or worse yet pimp out dancers. I've worked with DJs who were only there so they could date girls. I worked with a DJ who I later found out was pimping girls (and tried to pimp me).

I will never forget this one owner who suddenly changed a long-standing rule at the club without notice.

The rule was this--if there were at least six guys tipping at the rail, we went to 2 girls onstage at a time.

We had just moved into a huge, million dollar expansion which was a large improvement on the original club in every way but one--the beautiful new stage was NOT conducive to tipping at all. Instead of being a comfortable place to sit like the old club, it was right in the middle of the huge area, so that anyone sitting at the stage felt like his back was to the entire club. Consequently no one ever sat there until the place got really crowded--and they still don't to this day.

So it's almost 9:30, the place is still empty, and there are maybe 2-3 guys at the rail. The manager comes over and tells me the owner wants two girls onstage. I had just put up a new girl, so the best way to do this was to bring a new one up to join her next song, so that's what I announced. Not good enough, apparently, because the owner came over and said this to me:

"Listen, let me make something perfectly clear to you. You work for ME, NOT the fucking girls. I don't give a shit if none of them tip you at all, if I say I want something done, I want you to do it." And so forth for a bit longer. Pretty fucking insulting, actually, considering I had no intention of doing otherwise.

I was very reasonable and said "Look, that's fine, you're the owner, what you say goes--but the rule has always been that we went to 2 girls when 6 guys were tipping. If that's not the rule in the new club, that's fine with me, I can see we have a problem with the stage as it is. But you have to let me know when you change a rule, so I can keep you happy."

Oh he came back later and tried to be nice about it, but it was to gloat over his little victory partly, I could tell. That was the beginning of the end for me at that club. Now, of course, I am glad it happened, as I went right down the street and we have been kicking their asses for the last two years straight.

The point of this little story is to illustrate a simple truth. I know who makes it possible for me to make money in a stripclub. It's not the fucking customers. It's not the fucking girls. It's the owner who says 'Ok you are the DJ tonight'. If a customer is an idiot, he won't get anywhere with me. Likewise a dancer. If I did everything the customers and dancers asked me to do, I'd be out the fucking door so fast, and looking for another job the next day.

It's a balancing act. You have to keep them all happy. But usually that's impossible. So every night, all night, you have to make lots of little compromises, and convince everyone that it's in their best interest to go along.

The ignorant customers like to think I am working for their money. Wrong. If the customer doesn't like something, tough shit, the dancers take precedence. The ignorant dancers think I am working for their money. Wrong again. If the dancers don't like something, tough shit, the owner/manager takes precedence, or I don't have a job.

But the way to do it is to balance it all out, play diplomat so that everyone is happy even if they don't get exactly every little thing they want immediately. And they always want everything immediately, especially if they are used to hordes of customers kissing their asses all night long every night. They don't care about the rules, they will tell you it doesn't matter for any of a thousand different reasons.

The worst mistake you can ever make in a club is to let the girls get the impression you are a kissass. Then you are doomed.

Fortunately, at my present club, I have the full confidence of the owner, who actually, literally thanks me for working for him. He knows I will do as well as anyone at keeping the girls and the customers happy, but making sure the club is run the way he wants it to be, without him having to tell me what to do.

So no, the DJ is not the fucking low man on the totem pole. He (or she) runs the show, which of course is a show of dancers working with him (or her). if he's good, the girls are happy following the rules, and the show is good. Everyone makes money. If he sucks, the show sucks and no one makes money--except the serious hustlers who could make money in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust. But they are rare.

As a customer it's simple. If I can spend three or four hours in a club and not notice the DJ he is doing a great job.

My needs from a DJ are obviously not the same as a dancer's.

Well that's all very interesting, but here's how I see it:

    No owner = no stripclub
    No dancers = no stripclub
    No customers = no stripclub
    No DJ = jukebox

Lack of respect for the owner, the dancers, or the customers, eventually = unemployed.

Oh I can totally understand what you are saying. I ignore my best friend entirely. He is the DJ at another club here which is my favorite hangout.

But trust me, if the DJ is fucking up, you will notice alright.

The girls will hate the music. They will be confused as to who is onstage, or not show up at all. Or show up late as hell, hating the music. Yelling at the DJ from the stage. Sitting there sulking and not dancing. Etc., etc. Or maybe just going through the motions, dancing like a robot, not having fun and showing it clearly. You won't like that at all.

Some guys do listen, strange as that may sound (as I said I never do). You announce 'Hey, is there a gentleman in the house? Natasha is way to sexy to dance for free!' And like last night, somebody gets off their ass and goes to tip her. Then a few more guys get up there. Pretty soon you have a full tiprail. It can work, sometimes. But you don't say that if Natasha weighs 200 lbs, because 95% of the guys know damned well she isn't too sexy at all.

Timing is everything, and saying the right thing about the right girl.

Maybe Natasha is a sweetheart even if she weighs 200 lbs. You say 'Hey guys Natasha is a real sweetheart. Don't take my word for it, find out for yourself when she gets offstage.'

I told the owner of my present club that if I could get ten percent of the guys to listen to me it would be a good thing. He's a smart man and knew what I meant. If one out of ten guys take my advice and take Binky or whoever into the CR, it's going to be a busy CR that night. It usually is.

I just have to watch that Binky, she will try to say she already tipped me once in a while, when she didn't.

That's fine, but since 99% of stripclubs don't use a jukebox, your post is meaningless. this is a thread about DJs, not jukeboxes.

Lack of respect for the DJ=you get none in return. My owner respects me, and I keep him happy.

While it is impossible to keep 70 girls all happy at the same time, all night long, I keep enough of them happy that over half tip me well over the minimum.

So thanks for that bit of advice, but I don't need it.

I really hate inarticulate DJs. The people who you can't really tell if they're saying Alex or Alice or Alicia.

And I don't like the music to go silent between songs so that I'm standing up on stage with no music for 10 seconds. It's really awkward. Awkward while giving a lap dance too.

Other than that, don't try to get anywhere with me, don't touch me, and we'll get along fine.

Wow...just wow! Do you realize what a douche you come across as in this part of your post? Really...just DAMN. Although gotta admit, this attitude was the prevailing one of all the DJ's I've ever met save one. We are ignorant and they run the show. But guess what? No girls=no customers=no job. Plain and simple. I'm not saying you are low man on the totem pole or whatever, but you also aren't more important than the girls..hell back in the 90's my fav club (and it was a nice place) had a jukebox M-W for a while and it was pretty awesome. The girls ran the jukebox when it was slow and took turns DJ'ing & running lights when it was crowded. I made the same money...but maybe I'm just one of those serious hustlers.

I don't recall you coming across as so arrogant and insulting before so I'm trying not to rip into you too badly here, and I realize you have to do what the owner wants. So do the dancers, but some level of respect would be very nice. Calling us ignorant and implying we are spoiled to the point of having to have everything immediately is rude and uncalled for. The whole god complex thing is tiring, because EVERY DJ has it, even tho most tend to have a very short shelf-life.

I also have no clue what you mean about wanting everything immediately...There is no point in playing our songs if it isn't while we are actually on stage...so I'm confused. If we give you an idea of what we want when we start and ask for specific songs 10 min or so before hitting the stage, that's about as much as we can do to make your life easier.
"I hear you calling and it's needles and pins. I wanna hurt you just to hear you screaming my name...You're poision. but I don't wanna break these chains.... I wanna love you but I'd better not touch."

I did not say you were ignorant. Nor did I say that the women of SW were ignorant, spoiled, etc. But a lot of dancers are, just like a lot of DJs are ignorant and spoiled. But not EVERY DJ has a god complex.

If they were all like you, it wouldn't be a problem.

I was responding to the clear implication from someone who has never worked in the industry that the DJ was in fact the low man on the totem pole. Which they are not.

But the fact remains, they are not all like you. If I did everything every girl wanted me to, when she wanted me to, I'd be outta there very fast.

To be a good DJ, you have to be very firm with dancers who want you to break the rules for them. And there are dancers who ask me to break the rules every single night.

Of course I have respect for the dancers, or they wouldn't be mostly tipping me more than the minimum. But the number one rule has to be mutual respect.

Of course there is no show without the girls, no show without the owner, no show without the customers. But the way 99% of the clubs are run, there is no show without the DJ.

Here you go, Princessjas, there is no way I can beat this for a description of what we have to go through sometimes. Through no fault of yours, but no fault of ours, either. In the immortal words of phillydj, we miss him:

Mind you, this has all happened to me in ONE WEEK, so let's start there. Now, business at my club ahs been slow for whatever reason baseball playoffs, election, boring girls with no clue, take your pick) so FINALY last Friday I have a half decent crowd of guys who are OBVIOUSLY into rock. How do I know??? Because there STANDING ON THERE BAR STOOLS AND THROWING WADS OF MONEY ON STAGE to every girl (all two of them) dancing to rock and IGNORING the others. So I go up to one of the girls who I DID like (until this point) who usually dances to hip-hop, she should do one rock song. What do I get for looking out???

'No, I want RAP.' Even after SHOW her the guys hooting and hollering she says 'fuck them, I want rap!'. WTF?????? So I call her one away and she YELLS 'and none of that rock shit!'. So guess what???? THEY LEAVE, ALL TEN OF THEM. But hell, she got rap, tipped me under the minimum and hasn't been back since, just great. Is the owner mad, you bet. But you know why I can't do anything???? Because the girls will LITTERALY tell me (yes, this is a quote) 'fuck you asshole, play my fuckin music or no tip!'.

And THEN the owner wonders why I don't explain things to them. Say WHAT??? I don't like being talked to that way, so why bother. Is anything said to them when I complain about being cursed at, no, I get 'Why do you let them get to you?'. WHY????? Because I think I deserve a LITTLE respect when I'm trying to help these selfish girls make a living. Here's a friggin hint, play music guys like, guys stay longer, spend more money, drink more, EVERYONE MAKES OUT. I would THINK it was an easy concept to grasp. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I get girls looking at me with the whole 'What-the-fuck-is-this-your-not-getting-tipped' look on there face as a customer is telling me how cool the music is and 'Who is this, where can I get it?'.

NOW, lets flash forward to tonight and YES, this all happened in one evening believe it or not. Oh, where should I start????? Lets start with 'Hey, are we here to make money or be cool and hang out with our friends and cool guys who will nurse there Corona back from the FUCKIN' GRAVE, but wont tip a canoe?' So I got my young thugs in, chillin' just because a titty bar is the new cool place to be (I blame Lil' Kim but hey) and not spending NOTHING. Meanwhile I have a 40 something guy in a suit with 10's and 20's and ones fanned out in front of him like he was on the world series of poker. Does anyone go and talk to him????? HELL NO. He wasn't COOL enough I get. THIS GUY WAS LIKE QUINT DROPPING CHUM IN THE WATER AND NO ONE WOULD BITE. I just sat in the booth and laughed. Oh get this--two girls SAW the money, HE WAS OBVIOUS HE WANTED TO SPEND...but NO...THEY HAD TO GO TO THE DRESSING ROOM TO CALL THERE FRIGGIN BOYFRIENDS. I swore if any girl told me there was no money tonight I was gonna slug them.

Of course he left and I ACTUALY apologized to him; me, THE FUCKIN DJ. And before someone jumps on me asking why I didn't point him out to the girls, I DIDN'T HAVE TO. As he LEFT he made a BIG production of folding up his money as he looked around. He was BEGGING for some attention, but hey, I guess because he was older and in a suit and not a wearing baggy jeans and a gold chain out of a bubble gum machine with a hoodie on his time wasn't worth it.

OH OH OH get me started on HOODIES now. So, tonights bartender is one of our dancers with an 'I'm the best thing since cheese even thou I've been dancing a month' attitude. Fine, I've dealt with that before. But three people come in and one is so OBVIOUSLY under 21 (drinking age in NJ) it's PAINFUL. So I WATCHER her ask them for I.D. And I WATCH no one give it to her, and she SERVES THEM ANYWAY. Sometimes I have to put on the manager hat (as all d.js may do) so I call her to the end of the bar and ask her just THIS nicely 'Hun, did you card those three?' (knowing damn well the answer) and what do I get, JUST for asking???? 'Yeah I fucking carded them, why don't you just do your job, last time I checked I was the fuckin bartender and you're just the fuckin dj so leave me alone or go card them yourself asshole'. Once again, WTF??????? I'm sorry if you want to be the 'cool' bartender but I know the signs of someone under age after 11 years in this biz. And frankly we could loose our liquor license if they were even caught INSIDE the bar, let alone drinking. So I call the owner over (after telling him what a bitch said bartender was) and guess what???? You got it, NO I.D.! I tried my best to not look surprised but was too busy laughing. So after putting EVERYONES job in jeopardy, LYING about carding them, and catching an attitude with me for just ASKING her, she gets REWARDED by the other owner letting her do a couch dance. Not to sound redundant but...WTF??????? So, you put the entire welfare of everyone in jeopardy and you get REWARDED?????

And then.THEN, someone shows up two and a half hours LATE to there shift and then gets to stiff me on there tip...oh trust me the house got THERE end, but not I. Now this is being walked out on earlier in the night by a girl so, let's just say I won't even post what I made cause IM ASHAMED OF HOW LOW IT IS. And its funny, I have all of 2 girls right now who listen to me, let me do my job, and they make money. I throw them a curve on stage and they know I'm doing it to make them money. Example: Thursday night, hip-hop galore. A customer comes up to me and says 'What, you don't know anything about rock (to look at me you would know how dumb a question that is, ask Worthington, Tori, or MrChristopher)? SO I pull one of my 'I trust you' girls who likes the reggae over and I say 'trust me'. She nods, winks, I rock her and guess what?...VIP room baby. I just want to make the girls, the club, and myself money!...why won't anyone let me??...end rant.for now.

I love a DJ that would know what music I like and would play it without me having to ask for it. And one that knows what music would make me money, that could read a crowd. For example, you've got a bar full of bikers and good old boys, you don't want to dance to rap.

I have to admit I did like some of the cheesy DJ lines that we've all heard a million times. I had on DJ who would always joke about my age, I was one of if not the oldest dancers at the club, this always worked to my advantage since I looked about 10 years younger than I was.

I worked with one guy that played the music so loud you couldn't talk. I spoke with management about it and they said he'd just turn it up louder if they said anything to him. How am I supposed to talk to custies and get dances if they can't even hear me! I just let him know that when I tipped him out.

I dont' like DJ's that hound me for a tip, or say that what I gave them is not enough. I was lucky enough to work with some that knew that if I had a slow shift I couldn't give thme much and they were OK with that because they knew when I banked, they'd bank too.

I know it's hard being a DJ because you have to walk that line between pleasing the dancers and the owner, and it's not a good place to be some times.

My post was not meaningless, you simply missed the meaning. You posted a multi page thesis on why you are indispensible in a stripclub, while simultaneously running down dancers and customers. I simply presented the fact that clubs can and do operate without djs, but cannot exist without the other key participants.

    And, regarding the owner:

My owner respects me, and I keep him happy.

If you are such a key member of his team, do you think your owner would appreciate you patronizing a competitor's club on a regular basis? You've mentioned it before...is this normal for the industry? I just find it curious.

Only ever once in a while does a Dj get my attention. I can see where they can help and hinder a dancer though. It seems to me that both would want to stay on each others good side and it should be monetarily beneficial to both.

I guess the key is both of them being smart about it.

One thing for absolutely sure and i have done it before and will always do it......

You can have the hottest girls all day long but if i walk in and a jukebox is playing i walk my ass right out.

Same way with bad waitress and bartenders. Although it takes me a bit before i figure that out.

Like i tell my employees a strong cohesive unit working together will make everyone money. Anything else is eventually doomed to fail.

The post was meaningless, I repeat meaningless. This is a thread about disliking or not disliking DJ's, not fucking jukeboxes.

You want to post about jukeboxes, start a fucking thread about jukebox clubs, and we can discuss the reasons why so very few of all stripclubs entrust their show to them. Not here.

We all know this thread started as the result of a dispute between you and I, so let's try to keep it civil. So let's can the snotty remarks about multipage theses, and stop trying to say I was running down dancers and customers, when I was running down the pain-in-the-ass dancers and customers that we all know are out there, that--just as we know there are pain in the ass DJs.

The worst thing you can ever do is party in your own club. I have answered this question before. I am making the owner a lot of fucking money, he doesn't care if I spend some of my own in a club that isn't doing nearly as much business as we are, instead of getting intoxicated and maybe fooling around with the dancers in my own club. It's called being professional in your own club, and partying elsewhere, and is as much a 'team spirit' move as anything.

Oh, I know I will. Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt. Not only will I notice it but I will bitch about it to anyone that will listen.

Fortunately I don't have to live on tips but I do work on the production side of the entertainment business. If, at the end of the show, no one knows my name it means I did a good job that night.

Honestly HB it is very normal in the industry-both the night club industry in general and strip clubs in particular. I patronize about ten clubs within about a fifty mile radius of where I live and I see owners and managers in each other's clubs all the time. It's bad form to party in your own club unless you are the owner...in fact, it's against the rules in many strip clubs to show up when you are off duty at all.

I've never been to a juke box club that wasn't a lame pain in the ass situation with the same songs being played over and over, empty stages while the girls try to trade sets so they can sell private dances, and broke strippers begging me for ones so they can feed the jukebox...

I'll take a DJ any day over a Juke box.

LOL ! ! ! So true. I used to work with the guy who went by the name 'Preacher.' He had the nasally voice Djoser alludes too (blech) and a teeny, tiny, curly rat tail pony. And his personality...yuck. He was a bad stereotype all around.

I've started a thread on this topic in Industry Insight for anyone who cares to comment.

Our "dispute" arose in what I considered to be your immoderate use of the terms kissass and suckup in reference to customers in general, and me in particular. However, that thread is closed, and with it, that discussion. This is an entertaining thread, and I don't wish to see it closed unnecesarily. Peace.
