    Default Flexibility & Pole Tricks

okay so i tried doing a search, but that didn't turn out so well.

anyway, i've been working at this club for about 2 weeks now and i still feel like a damn fool and am always nervous because i don't know what the hell i'm doing on the pole in stage and some of the other girls look so damn GOOD and i just get up there and dance. i know pole tricks aren't a big deal i guess, but they are to me and i wanna learn. i would feel SO much more confident if i had some moves and i've been on youtube lookin at stuff so i'm excited about it

with that being said, what do you do if you're not super flexible? i for DAMN sure can't do a split or ANYTHING close to it. for those of you who were not naturally flexible, how did you do it? how long did it take? what are some exercises i can do to increase my overall flexibility as quickly as possible?

    thanks guys!

oh i'm thinkin about buyin a carmen electra pole, since its like $100 right now.

NO CARMEN ELECTRA POLE!! That shit will break so fast on you, they are DANGEROUS and if you spin the wrong way they will unscrew!

That being said, to increase flexibiliy, stretch every day. And practice lifting your legs out to the side and holding them there in different positions.

One of the most important things to do with pole tricks is upper-body strength, otherwise you just end up swinging your own weight around the pole looking silly. Simple stretches include practicing russian splits: just let your legs stretch out to the left and right while you reach down and try to touch the floor. Butterfly stretch will also help: Sit down, put your legs in front, draw them to you with bottoms of feet touching, lean forward and try to get your chest down to the floor. Yoga Pigeon pose will also help. This one you can google to help-it's too hard to describe.

    Good luck!

at least 30 seconds for a "starting to feel it but not ow yet" feeling. Then pop up, back down even further than before for 15 seconds, up to the first "starting to feel it but not ow yet", then down even further for another 15 seconds.

Lil Mynx is ok if you don't mind a hole in the ceiling.

x-pole or platinum stage are the only 2 poles that are completely safe and ceiling friendly.
I recall someone mentioning that someone showed them floor work moves that stretched their legs and with doing those they were able to do the splits in a couple months without having to dedicate any extra time for it. can anyone think of any moves like this that would look good on stage AND help you with splits progress/flexibility?

Do you do floor work? There's not been many people at my club that don't do either floor or pole work, but I find the floor work has been bruising my knees something awful, so I can't really do it 3 times/night and I'm not very good on the pole yet.

I have a Carmen Electra Pole - they DO NOT unscrew if you spin the wrong way - just make sure you put it up properly. I love mine, have had it for about 4 months.

Screw spending $300+ on a pole if you just want something to practice on. I'm sure having one from Lil Minx or X-pole is nice, but that's a lot a money! Get the Carmen Electra one, they really are great.

I am not flexible at all and I can do a few pole tricks. Not tons but I'd say intermediate. None of the moves I do require much flexibility. Honestly I think arm and ab strength is more important in pole. Do you have a local pole studio? I did 20 classes to get to what I can do now and started as a total beginner. I couldn't even do a basic spin. Now I can go upside down, handstands, jamilla, climbs, and a few different turns. Not tons but enough. I'm kinda stuck at the moment cause my skin is not tough enough so I really need more classes to take it to the next level since it's not like you can practice at the club (I rarely work when its really quiet). They can be a little expensive, but if it gives you confidence, it is worth it. It's also tax deductible.

I would like to be more flexible too, but I'm lazy when it comes to stretching.

The tension poles like the Carmen Electra pole are simply not appropriate for doing inverts on, which is why it's recommended to avoid them. If they pop out from the ceiling and lose tension while you are upside down you will land on your head. Just get an appropriate pole, it's worth the investment to not have to upgrade later.

Personally, I wouldn't say that most pole moves require a ton of flexibility so don't worry a lot about that right now. However, if you really want to get more flexible the key to it is really warming up your muscles. I literally got my splits overnight. I couldn't do them for anything and one night I spent HOURS just warming up my muscles with exercises and stretching. At the end of the night I could do the splits. It's not impossible, it just takes time.

thanks guys ! omg i can't imagine being able to do a split overnight LOL. i wouldn't even know what to do for hours at a time. i get bored stretching in like 5 minutes. yeah, my schedule is crazy. i work a day job, then 4 days a week at the club, so the only time i'm really able to do any type of classes is like one or two days out of the week. and depending on the class it's $10 or $15. or $45 for a monthly membership. i kinda wanna do the membership because it will pay for itself in 2 weeks. but anyway, i REALLY wanna learn stuff. i'm actually going to a class on saturday morning with one of my friends, but that's no gonna help me tomorrow, thursday and friday LOL.

i'll definiely be doing some booty crawls tonight to strengthen my abs tho. but i'll keep working on the stretching as much as possible. i REALLY wanna gain more flexibility

Kylea I tested your theory today. I'm a lazy ass when it comes to stretching. I stretched after a 5km run (3mi) and I did the splits! I've never done them before. LOL. I hope I can still walk tomorrow. It wasn't that hard. I was very warm at the time and did quite a few stretches before.

Two years ago I couldn't even touch my toes. I can now but it is still hard. Apparently I have really short hamstring muscles? I don't think I am flexible at all. More flexible than a guy but pretty shit for a girl. There is a chick at my club who is like a contorsionist. I would love to have her skills for one day... oh the sexual positions she must get herself into...

I have a carmen pole, my boyfriend bought it for a joke when I told him I want to dance.. I live in a apartment so I can't even add screws. Its pretty good but if you climb too high or spin it will fall down.. I hope adding a more textured pad on top will help abit but I'm not holding my breath. I might upgrade when I have the money.

I want to increase my flexibility too so I'm going to try out some of these tips. I will admit that I'm lazy.. So I will try stretching more.

No one is going to stretch everyday. We all say we're gonna do it, then we don't.
The best way to get in that good stretch is to do it at work on stage. If you can't do a split, go down as far as you can, and then turn that into another move till you can do a split.
Believe me I didn't just start out putting my legs behind my head and all the other crazy shit I do (see video).

Sometimes when no one is tipping I strecth, but I move more arms and make it look like I dancing. I know that sounds crazy, but there are ways to do it.

I train for gymnastics 3 days a week and I can tell you a thing or two about stretching, not so much the pole work.. But as some of the other girls said, it's very important to warm up your muscles before you stretch, one of the most important things actually! If I go to gymnastics training right after I woke up from a nap, it's torture. It's much more painful and dangerous, too. You should go for a little jog and jump around before you try to get your splits or whatever else. Your muscles will stretch easier and it will hurt a lot less, I guarantee you. I had to get to a certain flexibility so I worked on it a couple nights nights a week in front of the tv... It makes time go by faster and it's something productive. Alternate, alternate, alternate- Sit in a straddle position. Reach to the right.. to the left.. To the middle... Then try right leg splits, left leg, middle, then start over again and keep doing each stretch for 30-45 seconds and every round you will get farther and farther til you reach your goal. It's much easier that way than the torture in gymnastics where a coach sits on your back and pushes you to the ground until you cry for mercy. I was NOT flexible at all before I started gymnastics. I couldn't dream of even touching my toes. If you want to have someone push you down, let them know to be gentle and that can be helpful too. I ask my little brother to sit on me while we watch tv.. (Wow that sounded incredibly inapropriate). And regular upkeep helps a ton. It's better to maintain your splits than to start from scratch again later down the road.
    No pressure, no diamonds.

Also, Ill add though, that Alethea Austin recomends to stretch for a minimum of 3mins per stretch. And that woman is BENDY, so Im guessing she would know.

She said it at the end of my workshop.

1/2 hour if she's been teaching pole.
    2 hours on other days.
