    Default Weak ankles maybe..

I have a random question. Ive been dancing for a few years now. I noticed I can only dance in boots. Thigh high 6 inch platforms.
I tried regular stripper shoes, same 6inch, same style, but tipped and fell over a few times on stage. Embarassing.

Even with the boots, I have trouble with balance sometimes.

    Am I the only one.

    No - you're not.

Whilst I'm not a dancer - I do model Extreme and Fetish High-Heels for a living - including a lot of dancer's heels too. I've toppled off platforms on numerous occasions and it hurts!

The difficulty with stripper platforms is that the actual sole in contact with the ground is a) very shiny - and - b) tiny, compared to the area on the inner sole that carries your foot.

If you look at a dancer's platform from the front or behind - you can clearly see that the platform tapers inwards and down in a 'V' shape, from the inner sole to the contact area with the ground - and unless you have very narrow feet, your foot can overhang the front and sides of the shoe too.

    Attachment 23138 Attachment 23139

In addition - unlike a normal shoe (even a 6" heel with no platform) - your foot is not in direct contact with the floor, so you've got much less 'feel' with your toes - and much less flexibilty in the sole of the shoe. You also have a 2" height to fall from if your foot or ankle gives way.

Wheras with a normal shoe - if you say...tread on a small stone - or your heel tip lands on one - you'll feel it right away through the sole - and - the flexibility of the sole on the floor gives you the chance to compensate your balance. Also if your foot does happen to slip and your ankle twists - you have the entire area of the sole on the ground to help you regain your balance. You also have no height to fall off.

With a platform - you have a rigid block of plastic under your toes, which doesn't flex and doesn't give you as much feel as a normal sole. So, the result of treading on a stone, or slipping and overbalancing in a platform, means that when your foot automatically tries to compensate- you have a 2" drop to the ground - and your foot tends to simply 'tuck' under and you end up twisting your ankle.

Does this make sense so far??

The mules are the worst as they offer absolutely no ankle support whatsoever. You can try styles that have an ankle strap which will at least give you a little more support as the shoe is wholly attached to your foot AND your ankle.

Boots of course are the best as they encase your ankles completely - but even they aren't accident proof.

The best thing to do - is to practice walking on flat floor in these heels as much as you can to gain more confidence and balance. That is, of course, if you don't already!

Try to get used to walking in them as you would a normal shoe. Golden rules are - head up, back straight, tummy in. Walk by putting your HEELS down first - then toes. If you go toe first - you are already over-balanced and putting too much strain on the tiniest part of the sole.

You can also do some exercises to help strengthen your ankles. However none of this is gonna help if the floor's wet or you tread on something slippery.....we're all in trouble then, aren't we?

I hope this is of some help.

No, the first year and a half I danced I wore little 3 inch gogo boots.

    Take smaller steps.

Some rubber grips on the soles may help if the bottom of the shoe is too slick.

I've been dancing for... idk. 4+ years... and I STILL trip/stumble/randomly fall all the time.
It's because I tend to stand with my weight towards the outside of my foot... and since the soles taper inwards... there's nothing under the part of my foot I put pressure.
So I just random tip over sometimes. Haha.
