    Default The God/Goddess complex

I also have no clue what you mean about wanting everything immediately...There is no point in playing our songs if it isn't while we are actually on stage...so I'm confused. If we give you an idea of what we want when we start and ask for specific songs 10 min or so before hitting the stage, that's about as much as we can do to make your life easier.
What you might not realize, though I was trying to point it out in my previous reply, is that there is a parallel complex amongst the more short-sighted dancers. You could call it the Goddess Complex, I suppose, and it comes about for many of the same reasons that a lot of DJs get sucked in.

Look, I have never tried to say that all DJs are perfect, Christ no. I used to be way worse than HockeyBobby (no offense HB just sayin lol) or anyone else here, when I first joined SW and for maybe a couple years afterwards. I bashed DJs left and right, and posted that I thought there were very few exceptions to the rule (that they sucked).

But not all dancers are perfect--just as customers, bouncers, managers, and owners are often flawed. Probably the toughest part of my job has been dealing with a certain percentage of dancers who think the rules don't apply to them for any of a number of reasons--all boiling down to the goddess complex thing, basically.

The percentage varies, but it is probably about the same as with DJs, I bet. Only we DJs have to deal with anywhere from 12-70 or more dancers a night. So where a dancer might have to deal with a God-complex DJ several nights a week, we have to deal with 2-8 goddess complex dancers every night we work, and that's a low estimate. And all it takes is one goddess complex dancer on a rampage to ruin your night--especially if she is drunk, on drugs, and/or is blowing the manager or owner, or all four.

I am not saying that all dancers are like this, and certainly not that all SW dancers are like this. But they are sure out there, and they sure make things difficult, unless you have full and complete backing from management--and even then they will try to get you to break the rules for them every night! And will get all bent out of shape if you refuse. I could post about specific examples, but it would literally fill several volumes.

There are other things that make the DJs position a tough one, of course, but this is the one thing nobody realizes goes on. I tried to warn a new DJ about 8 months ago about it. He was hired for sundays and mondays, and had many years experience DJing in other kinds of clubs, shouldn't have been too bad. But his first sunday was Memorial Day. I told him he might want to wait until the next sunday as it would be very busy and a very, very tough night to start in a busy club like ours. I told the manager I thought it was a bad idea, and the manager said 'Well let's see what happens, if he hangs himself we'll deal with it, and he will learn.'

He was all 'OH I've got it down, Djoser! I am ready to go!! I can handle this!"

They ripped him to bloody shreds...

...go for it Djoser. No other DJ's are here explaining it so lets hear some examples.
"Peter, did you take Stewie to a strip-club? He smells like sweat and fear." - Lois and Stewie (Family Guy) ... "Through early morning fog I see, Visions of the things to be, The pains that are withheld for me, I realize and I can see..."

I usually try to come in and hang out the first night a new DJ starts, just to make sure he/she is OK. It's better not to hang in the booth with them, though. That just makes them nervous and inclined to lean on you.

This guy I left to the mercy of the dancers. I was tired and he was a little too insistent he had it down. I did stop in briefly and saw him freaking the hell out, and listened to some of the dancers bitch about him. He's doing OK though now.

The other guy was a lot different during the night I was training him. I was trying to explain to him about how the hardest part of the job was dealing with the various women. He had done weddings before, so I said 'Listen, you'll do fine, you've dealt with the brides so you will know how to handle it. He said 'OK, I think I get it, it's like having 40 brides all at once.'

I about fell on the floor laughing. Sure enough he is taking to it amazingly well.
