Default Need to gain weight (could be trigger for BD issues)

Hi ladies. I have a ? for you all and a bit of background to go with it. I used to have a great body - nice ass (my best feature) - I got sick last Mar/Apr - doctors still have no idea whats wrong but I have a hard time eating. Im sick everytime I eat and the thought of food makes me sick. I have to force feed at this point and Im getting smaller and smaller. Im 5'8 and as of yesterday 110.2 lbs. Its gross. Im way way way too skinny and have lost pretty much all the fat on my body - legs, butt, stomach. You can see my bones. Im not anorexic. I do not have an issue with food per se - just that it makes me sick. Years ago I had a problem with laxatives but its been YEARS - over 5 since I stopped using them.

Wondering if anyone else has/has had issues like this and how did you get back into the groove of EATING?! I want to eat - I know I should - I just feel sick everytime I do. I dont know what to eat or how to eat or what to do but Im looking sicker and sicker. Im now having problems with acne - face, chest... Im at my wits end and need this to be fixed. Another issue is headaches at least 3 times a week, breathins problems and chest pain. Its all compounding and I just want to die sometimes I feel so horrible.

I know this is kind of a mix of issues but I know SOMETHING is wrong with my body. It is working against me not for me and its very very frustrating. You ladies are so smart that I figure you may have an idea of something I can do to try to pinpoint the issues. My doctors just keep giving me more and more drugs but wont figure out the issue (GERD, asthma, allergies, anxiety, ETC ETC ETC) I mean TONS of drugs - I HATE drugs. Im on my own on trying to fix this issue...

I need to gain about 15 lbs back so I can look normal again. Help?

That sounds awful! I'm so sorry! I'm not surprised by your doctors actions - sometimes it just feels like they would rather treat the problem with drugs than fix the issue for good. I think you're right when you say something is wrong with your body; you should def. write up a list of symptoms and shop around to every specialist who will listen - becasue you really need to get this figured out. I don't really know of anything that causes the symptoms you listed, except maybe hyperthyroidism - which I've heard from girlfriends makes keeping on weight difficult, and can make them nauseous.

Do you feel ill when you drink? Maybe you could try taking in calories/fat in drinks instead of food. My Grandmother can't eat much, and she drinks a lot of Carnation instant meals, and adds a lot of High Calorie Supplements to her drinks when she get's to thin.

Hope you get this all figured out soon!

I lost a lot of weight, mostly due to anxiety and eating gluten...it would make me sick after eating it so i didn't want to eat. as a result i lost about 15 pounds...I'm 5'9 and weighed a little less than 110, lost my ass (which like you is my best feature) and my boobs, which weren't big to begin with. It was a combination of anxiety/stress and eating foods that i couldn't tolerate, thus making me never wanting to eat. in order to gain weight back, i literally had to drink about two ensures (the kind with extra calories) a day, because even though i felt better it was hard to eat a meal without feeling full really fast and could still only eat once a day. it took a little time but i had to drink those for about two months before i put ten pounds back on. i can definitely relate cause i looked anorexic even though i wasn't purposely not eating, i just had NO appetite. now my appetite is pretty even. i also cut caffeine out of my diet because i do fill up so easily that when i drink caffeine and won't eat breakfast or lunch.

Yes I go through the same thing. It comes and goes and I can't figure out why. Smoking pot is the only thing that I've found helps at all. I think Boost Plus tastes better than Ensure. Those are a must when you cannot eat but you're about to pass out from lack of calories.

Do you girls that have this problem also find that you get the thing where you almost pass out after standing up? When I'm not eating much I find myself falling down and shaking constantly, but I'm pretty used to it at this point, so it doesn't freak me out and I'm good at hiding it.

The way I describe it is my stomach feels like its got a sunburn and it does not want food in it. And there's like no information on the internet about lack of appetite and how to stimulate it, only how to suppress it. Honestly, if you don't want to smoke pot, I would suggest talking to your doctor about Marinol. Its a synthetic THC pill, I think I'm going to get it again because I don't want to keep buying pot and smoking all the time, but I don't want to waste away again. I've been on it before and it helps massively.

I just made an appt for acupuncture for my stomach problems so I'll let you know how that goes. I figure I've tried mostly everything in Western Medicine. In my 2 endoscopies they told me I just had gastritis, but I'm like "oh my stomach lining is JUST inflamed for some unknown reason, I'm sure that's not causing any problems" like wtf.
    Good luck girl

i get the dizziness thing and if you're not eating it's due to low blood sugar which will make dizzy and can cause fainting and shakiness. Laurcon, it sounds like you have what I have (god I have a lot of health issues haha) but I have gastritis which is the inflammation of the lining of the stomach. The burning sensation would make me want to eat less too. I smoke sometimes to eat because I still lose my appetite. But smoking will irritate it more, as will alcohol and spicy foods...so the higher consumption of those will make it more irritated and thus may turn your appetite off because it hurts. At first doctors tried to say I have GERD but it was more in my stomach. I had endoscopy and turns out I have gastritis, it's completely curable with meds though, but you have to give yourself time to heal

Yes I've been told I have gastritis but none of the acid reducing/controlling meds have ever helped me. What has helped you ruby?

well none of the nexium or stuff like that. i was prescribed one gram of carafate three times a day. i haven't been diligent about taking it but it worked a lot than nexium or prilosec, that did nothing for me. you also are supposed to avoid alcohol, smoking, caffeine, spicy foods and keep stress down. i notice it's definitely a lot worse when i'm combining all of those, my stomach will hurt me for a few days but it's slowly healing...and has gotten better over time...i eat a lot of bland foods which i think has definitely helped me.

I've had issues with food in the past. I would recomend going to a good privatly owned natural food / herb place and talk to the owner. They usually can come up with a natural way to solve some problems. I would recommend eating avocadoes to start. Have the health food store recommend a good nutrionist who can set you up on a food plan that well help you. I had a major problem 5 years ago digesting food, DR's wanted me on pills went the natural way and have aloe juice every morning and no more issues.

    Can you start with smoothies?
I would use coconut milk and fruit, protein
Experiment with ingredients like peanut butter, flax, coconut oil, cottage cheese.
    Freeze bananas and other fruit.
    Almond milk

Thanks ladies. I would prefer to go the natural route. I guess I could try the ensure. Ive been trying to force feed but end up taking a couple bites and trash the rest. So frustrating. Im now having horrible pains in my mid chest which my friend said is my stomach.. also pains on my lower left abdomen... shortness of breath. Im wondering if I have some serious intestional issues that the doctors are ignoring.

Indulge yourself for awhile. Eat whatever appeals to you. You can make it healthy later- calories are what you need.

I go through periods of having to force feed myself. I go to the buffet and just eat whatever strikes me. It happens when I am stressed or excited.

Though I have to ask, have you been to a gastroenterologist and had a scope done?

I have Kaiser. They will NOT refer me to a specialist. I freaking HATE them. In April Im changing our insurance. Its been a year and they keep saying "if this doesnt work I'll give you a referral" just for me to try - it not work and them NOT give me the referral. Id have to be on my friggen death bed to get anywhere with those jerks. Ive also switched my primary twice - same crap.

kaiser is horrible. you definitely need a referral, thats what my doctor did and once i had my endoscopy i had the answer as to why i couldn't eat and why i was experiencing pain. it's a shame they aren't giving one to you.

Wow! Kaiser used to be good! (But that was almost 7 years ago).

I would lie to your GP and say you feel worse to get seen by a specialist. You may want to get your thyroid tested or get tested for lupus.

I had an issue w/ not wanted to eat last summer. Basic saltines and 7-up seemed to work until I started feeling better again. But mine condition was due to new bc's.

You need to investigate. I hope you feel better soon.

all I can suggest is protein smoothies. and move to Canada- you will be on a waiting list for 8 months, but they'll refer you to the specialist

Honestly though, medical tourism is on the rise. Bangkok, Singapore, and Hong Kong all have world-class hospitals and doctors that you can see for a 10th of the price of american doctors. So, take a holiday and stop by a specialist on the way... lol.

I hate this. The shortness of breath is KILLING me... being in a closed up room thats 90 degrees getting up and down and up and down I thought I was going to DIE today. I couldn't wait to finish the session up and I typically love doing newborn shoots. =(

Oh goodness, I hate to say this and alarm you. But something similar happened to a friend of mine recently. It got so bad he couldn't eat and was in the hospital for several days. They ran all the tests and it wasn't cancer or colitis, but some sort of blockage.

Still, your symtoms could be indicative of at least a dozen conditions. You NEED to get to a doctor who will run the tests on you, at least to rule out ulcerative colitis, or at least, gall bladder issues or ulcer.

You know what? You just reminded me - and I havent mentioned this to my doctor because it just clicked. When I had an ultrasound by my IVF doctor he said my intestine is fused to me ovary/fallopian tube on the left side which is where lately Ive been having pain... I wonder if thats causing these issues? I am just unsure because this started a year ago and my surgery was 2 years ago and the inflammation that caused this to happen was like 5-6 years ago?

Hi. Does all food make you feel sick, or only a certain kind? Keep a food diary to note down what you think it could be.

It might possibly be Celiac disease, sounds like you have some of the symptoms. Could be another food allergy too.

Try eating only fruit and veg for a week and see if the nausea goes away. It took the Doctors 25 years to diagnose my celiac disease, and that only happened when I told them I was sure it was Celiac causing my problems. They were very sceptical at first, but I proved right in the end.

You know your own body better than anyone else. Please try the fruit and veg diet for a week, if you notice you feel better then it's a food allergy of some sorts causing your problem.

OMG Audrey, I have been researching all of my symtoms online for the past month and I have all of the same symptoms you do. I have been to doctors as well and they refuse to refer me to a specialist so I completely understand. I had bloodwork which all came back normal so they just told me to eat more calories. I eat so healthy and yet I am looking so thin and sick. I am 5'4" and only 98 lbs. I do not know what to do. I have been really thin all of my life like 105 - and do not have an eating disorder and no medical history. When I eat certain foods I feel sick afterward. Nautious almost. I have a gut feeling it is my upper GI or hyperthyroid. or Celiac. I normally try to drink several smoothies ( protein powder, maca (for energy) works =) ,flax seeds, acai juice and bananna with whole milk yogurt and berries) just to get in some extra calories. I also eat chicken, steak, potatoes, fish, rice and lots of fruit. I snack on avacados, veggies, make nut butters. I'm not big into preservatives or sodium foods. I even tried to research celiacs diet and tried it for only a day because it was too hard for me not to eat grains. I am so worried and frusterated with doctors and western medicine. I am going to see a naturopath, a nutritionist and get a colon cleanse as well as supplement and read up on the internet. I am afraid to excercise and burn any more calories. My ass is gone and I am freaking out and depressed. I am getting headaches and never have gotten them in the past. I am scared. Please msg me if you find out anything that works for you. Take Care amd Good Luck .

What about food intolerances Laurcon? I started having horrible stomach pain 2 years ago. They did every test on me and couldn't figure out what it was. I really didn't think it was food intolerance because I didn't get upset stomach or bowels it was literally pain. Exactly what you just described...like my stomach was burnt on the inside but not the same as heartburn. So painful that I was afraid to eat and often couldn't work. The worst part was eventually the pain got so bad that I couldn't sleep. It would start suddenly (usually when I was in bed) and hurt for anywhere from 3 hours - 2 days. I was still going to the toilet normal and didn't have any intestinal pain or cramping. It would just gradually go away and then randomly flare up again.

My mom actually figured out when I was home for a visit that it happened every time I ate potato. After googling it I found out about Nightshades - potato, tomato, capsicum (peppers) and eggplant. I then tested each food and bingo! That was what was causing the pain. I stopped eating them and have not had a stomach ache like that since.

Oh my, sorry to hear that! I always had stomach problems, I would do these weird burps and my stomach would do all these crazy nosies. Ones a month I get really bad pain in my stomach, it seems to get bloated and it would hurt to walk, move or turn. I would just have just lay there for an hour or two till I feel better. It felt as if my stomach was going to explode and I was going to puke. I started taking acid controlling pills and noticed drinking warm liquids helped, I had trouble eating for a while, I would loose 5lbs in a week easily which is just insane. People always thought I puked my food that was neverr the case or even close.

Anyway with the eating problem. I always feel down in stress and such emotionaly manner. Is there is something wrong in your life? Do you think that is affecting your eating habits? Even if you may not think of it, that could still be a problem. Start with a milkshake or smoothie. Those always helped whenever I cannot eat. I also add protein powder to my shakes. If you ever work out, after working out have a drink with the powder. Start off slowly and built your way up.

Eat things such as oatmeal, rice pudding, something mushy and soft. Oatmeal and rice is great for anytime since it gives you energy and burns slowly as well as its fulling and healthy. Stick to salads, if your that sort of a person, fruits and veggies. Even if you cannot eat a meal, eat every 3 hours! Even if its just crackers, or a fruit, even a shake! Make it every 3 hours. Your hungry should build up within a few days. Then make yourself eat more each time - even if its just oatmeal double that intake. See if your hunger builts up. Stick to the healther and organic things. As it builds up start eating proper meals. While you cannot eat as much as you could take vit's that are needed to keep the body up there. I hope you get better soon
