Default question for girls w/ tats

So Saturday I got a cover-up on my neck, it's a bow that takes up most of my neck with a lot of color and shading. It's still sore to the touch and over the bone when i move my head forward. I want to work tonight but I'm worried with all the germs and what-not that it could become infected, however it's already getting the flaking over it. I don't want to wear my hair up either because I don't want people just randomly touching it. Is it too soon to go in? It's not like i'm going to be putting my neck on the floor or all over guys, but still the potential of the germs and possible sweating concerns me. Advice? Comments?

I have a massive tattoo on my leg. I always worked when it was fresh ( six sessions ). Sweating doesn't matter. Just use unscented Lubriderm on it and keep it clean. I never did anything extensive care wise for my tattoos, it should be fine.

yeah i figured as long as i dont let the sweat stay trapped under my hair (which i really don't even sweat that much) i'll be fine. i'm just paranoid when it comes to germs and since it's a cover-up i really don't want to fuck it up haha. it's healing normally i just am scared to bust it up somehow, but i'll bring my lotion to keep it moisturized. there isn't any scabbing either so no potential to pull the scab off while dancing either.

Yes, but there is plenty potential for your hair to get stuck on a new tattoo, and cause problems since your hair can harbor bacteria. I'd keep my hair up. I didn't work untill I had scabbing on my neck

I work with fresh tats. Just be careful, wash your hands constantly and make sure to keep it moist. Wash it the second you get home (and honestly if you can manage to do it several times at work too that would be even better!)

so i worked and cleaned it once i got home...it was scented cheap soap so i was skeptical about using it...but i washed my hands thoroughly then put lotion on it. i also kept my hair up which was interesting to dance like that because i never wore it up but i actually did really awesome tonight, it was slow but i pulled in really good money. also, one guy tried to touch my neck and i kinda snapped at him to not touch it, then explained. now i'm kind of wondering if my hair up, showing off my tattoo helped me stand out more...i got a couple comments how i looked like the girl next door but was also naughty ha.

Don't ever use that cheap soap on new ink. Bad idea girlie, you were smart not to.

yeah i just washed my hands with it then used lotion, then washed it when i got home. it's not my first tat, but the first time after getting something and working. but a lot of guys seemed to like the tattoo, it's very feminine, although if i told them the meaning it would depress them haha.

A&D! Well, Bepanthen here, but I swear by it. I know, it's for butts. But it gives a breathable, moist barrier against nasties. Also I found it made my hands nice but that's irrelevant. I know it's a bit late, but for your next shift, try a tiny bit of A&D over it, and keep your hair up.

As for washing it? Stand in the shower, hair away, water on the ink, and just smooth over it with your hands. No soap. Just gently wash water over it. Pat, not rub dry, with a clean towel. Little bit of lotion/A&D/whatever you're using. Job done!

    And post pics!

do you think it's better to maybe use the a&d when i work again because it works as a barrier
    while working?

A few days?! I used it for like a month, personally. And yes, the barrier against nasties is super useful in environments where you feel a bit ehhhh about cleanliness. I still use it when I work, simply because it makes my ink "pop" a little more - but only the tiniest layer.

Use lotion, especially If you are already using it now. I would never recommend a&d, because it has a very high concentration of lanolin in it, which many people are allergic too. I also would never recommend healing a tattoo fro start to finish with an ointment, because they are oil based and can be extremely drying. My personal fave is curel unscented lotion. I have almost 35% of my body tattooed, and I swear by it. It's never done me wrong.

I used A&D on all of my tats and so has my husband. When the flaking was done but it was still sensitive we use Vaseline unscented vitamin E lotion. It's recommended to use only unscented lotions on healing tats as they cause no irritations, unless you have an allergy to certain lotions like that.

You're not supposed to put vitamin E on tattoos; it can pull ink out.

Yeah my tattoo artist ( one of the best in the country, Phil Colvin, look him up! ) always told me to just wash with mild soap and water and use a gentle unscented lotion. None of the tattoos he ever gave me scabbed ( peeled some, but never gnarly scabby ) and he never recommended antibiotic ointment.

I mentioned earlier, I do the Lurbiderm Unscented but Curel is good stuff as well.

Aveeno is great. I've used it on all of mine and they've all healed perfectly.

I did this. It made me feel more comfortable. Might've been totally psychological but still.

yeah i've never had a tattoo artist to tell me to use a&d ointment for longer than a couple of days, they have always told me to switch to a regular lotion. but i think i'm going to use it at work, i'm paranoid about infections but it doesn't look like it's gonna scab which is good, i've never had that happen, i wonder why some people get scabs instead of just the usual flaking.

As long as customers/girls aren't touching it... you should be fine. Just wash it if/when you feel it needs it.

    My personal experience:
I've had a few tats from bad artists... scab central. All of the recommended ointment. Desperately needed touch ups.
All my good looking tattoos from top-rated artists have barely scabbed... if at all. And every one of them told me to wash it, keep it clean. Unscented lotion when it felt dry/tight. BARELY needed touchups if at all.

Yeah, I had one tattoo done by a really good artist, really young and looked about 14 but was amazing. it's in my inner arm and he was extremely light-handed so it really didn't hurt like i thought...my neck was worse which i wasn't expecting. also, i haven't needed a touch-up...i'm thinking though i will go back for my neck to get some of the color and shading slightly darker, which he suggested and would do for free. i saw a girl last night with a foot tattoo that desperately needed a lot of touching up, it looked like a non-permanent tattoo that was start to come off from the wear of her shoes.

then again i see a lot tattoos that look bad to me. i'll see an occasional girl with tattoos that i really like, like this girl who came in last night had really different tattoos and i just wanted to sit and look at all of them.

Uhm lol no it wont. Never pulled any ink out of mine. And you aren't supposed to spread it on like butter. All of mine look like I just got them done yesterday. And my oldest one I got was 6 years ago.

Using straight up petroleum jelly or just plain old vaseline is what pulls/dulls the vibrance of the color. Vitamin E is essential for healing skin. o.0

I get that some people are sensitive to lanolin, but I'd really hope they'd know about it, and check the labels of ointments.

I'm not really sure how a moist barrier can be extremely drying? I mean having never used A&D (bepanthen is the UK equivalent) maybe I'm way off, but I found it incredibly moisturising. I have about 20% of my body tattooed, and it's what I and my friends swear by, too. It's never done us wrong. *shrug*

All I wrote was what Any decent tatoo artist would recommend. I'm not the the only one that said don't use ointments either so I'm not sure why you're singling me out. But if you'd really like to know, all ointments are oil based and can dry out a tattoo, because instead of letting it breathe, it creates a greasy barrier that can collect and harbor bacteria; oils on an open wound will dry it out because it discourages skins natural oil production. Also, like I said before, a&d has very high concentrations of lanolin which many people are allergic to; its a crappy ingredient that many lotions use because its a cheap emollient. I could go on about it all day but I won't.
