The following may or may not apply to you:
I had always gotten the rare/occasional compliment on my lips. Lets say maybe once a month. Nothing spectacular.
I'm pretty obsessed with lips and so I own just about every type of liner, gloss and lipstick available, from high end to drug store brands. My routine when wearing lipstick or colored gloss has always been to line my lips with a liner or use lipstick with a liner brush and "correct" my lips by making the side that is smaller "match" the other, so the sake of symmetry. I'm sure this how most girls do their lips, except for the ones that are blessed with perfect natural symmetry (which is very few).
Well, a month or so ago I decided that instead of correcting the mismatched sizes (and dont get me wrong its not like one side is way higher/fuller.. its probably an average difference) by adding more to one... I would instead use concealer to subtract the less defined areas around the larger/higher side. I also "neatened" up the edges of my lips by lightly blending (with a small brush) the concealer around the less defined areas (mostly outer edges). Then I would apply my gloss or lipstick as usual without liner.
And seriously, I have gotten compliments on my lips nearly every single day since. The shape they are this way is just much more flattering. Sometimes I get multiple compliments in a day now. It is -easily- the most I've ever been complimented after changing something.
I hope the explanation makes sense, it's kind of hard to explain. I also don't know if it's useful to you or not.. since I'm guessing it depends on your lip shape. But, it does go to show that sometimes it's good to try something outside of your typical routine.
