I struggle everyday. I am 5'7 and 135 pounds, however not too long ago I weighed 250. What I struggle with is choosing what to put in my mouth and how much of it. I still want to eat what I was eating at 250 pounds. However I have to deal with the fact that I have to eat less of it. I mean I still will eat ice cream/chips/etc but I have to keep portions in mind. When I was 250 pounds it was nothing for me to sit in front of the tube and eat the whole tub of ice cream.

Now I put the ice cream in a bowl and one tub of it lasts me over a week (a tub is 2 litres) because I only allow myself a cup or two every other day. But I struggle with this. Sometimes I just want to say "screw this" and eat the entire tub.

I was never overweight as a kid, infact I weigh the same as I was when I was 16. I was a size 6-7 all throughout highschool. The issue is that I never learned how to eat properly. I was a competitive athlete (karate) and won many medals. I had a black belt.

My mother would often take me to Wendy's after practice and allow me to order 2 or 3 burgers. One of her favourite things to do was to take me to the local diner on a Sunday morning for brekky where they served practically grease (you know-hash browns, 3 eggs, waffle and sausage all covered in grease) as a meal. But I only weighed 130 pounds at the time so I thought this was OK to be eating.

So when I quit karate and went off to university I continued to eat the way I was taught. Gained over 100 pounds in an year or so. I was 22 when a friend died of heart failure (he was over 350 pounds and only 50 years old) so that kicked me in to gear to lose the weight. But it is a daily struggle because of the habits I picked up as a kid.

My mom BTW is 5'2 and weighs maybe 115 pounds. She works in the trades (construction), is unhealthy and only eats one meal a day (usually fast food) because she says she does not feel hungry. Oh and she drinks lots of coffee and smokes a pack of cigs a day. She has lost most of her teeth and looks very hard on the eyes (she has been mistaken for a man several times).
I feel you here. My mother thinks she's being really nice to her kids when she plies us with junk food. She's treating us. Spoiling us. Making us obese and giving us health problems. And now that we're grown up and our metabolism is slowing? 3/4 kids are obese and none of us have a healthy relationship with food.
Get the fuck off my harbl, yo'.

Jenni, you're going to hate me for this but the reason you struggle with your weight is because you eat ice cream and chips.

No one NEEDS to eat 2 litres of ice cream a week and the fact that simply not eating garbage foods is considered a "radical diet" explains why people stay overweight and unhealthy.

Get mad at me if you like, but if you want a better body at least be honest with yourself about why you're not there yet.

As one of those people who DOES have a medical reason for my weight control(long story) I get very annoyed at people who sit and eat an entire cheesecake and then complain that they have a thyroid problem etc.
The MOST I have EVER been over weight, was at 190lbs (90kg) and 38% body fat. The smallest I have ever been was 80lb (35kg) and less than 17% bf (I looked like a skeleton and couldnt walk)
Yeah I have health problems, but I still watch what I eat and stay active.

I worked with a stripper who was delusional about her weight. Im currently 31weeks pregnant and Im still a smaller size than her (and shes 5'6", Im 6') When I left I sold a bunch of my outfits, and she wanted to try them all on, not even considering that they wouldnt fit (which none of them did or course)
Theres no sense crying over every mistake,

I never said I struggle with my current weight or that I want a better body, rather I struggle with eating habits.

I weigh 135 pounds, which is by most definitions healthy. I am 5'7 so that is a BMI of 21.1.

i agree with you that no one NEEDS to eat ice cream or junk foods. However these foods are addictive. And many families have generations of bad eating habits. Again if it were just as simple as saying "eat healthy and exercise more" then we all would do it. Easier said then done.

Infact with that same logic we could just tell heroin addicts to just stop taking heroin and they would do it. Or an alcoholic to just stop drinking alcohol. We would not have the need for treatment programs, methadone, etc.

I actually think that many overweight people truly don't realise what a risk they are putting on their health. The extreme obese cases probably do but the majority of just overweight people in our society don't realise how AT RISK they are for diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease etc just by being a bit fat. Carrying fat around the abdomen is a health risk.

Another thing which down right pisses me off is all this 98% fat free shit that is packed with sugar to replace the fat!! This causes people to stay overweight because they think they can eat more of it because it's fat free and also because sugar is harder for the body to break down than is fat so it turns into the type of fat that just hangs around the abdomen.

It is difficult to know what to eat. I've never been overweight but I've lost 5 kilos lately and dropped a significant amount of body fat because I hired a personal trainer and nutritionist and I became educated about nutrition and SURPRISE it's actually working!! Results don't lie. I look better than I've ever looked before. A lot of things I thought I was doing right - eating the fat free stuff and not eating much meat was doing just the opposite.

I would advise anyone to get a trainer and nutritionist. If you can't afford one long-term just hire one to give you a once-off eating plan and exercise plan. It's really worth it. Also don't hire someone who is not in good shape themselves. A trainer/nutritionist should practice what they preach.

im thin but i have cholesterol issues. im a junk food junkie. and thats my choice. my mom is somewhat over weight, but she never sits still. but age and menopause are a factor for her. its hard to kick bad eating habits cuz u NEED food to survive. and i think most people, fat and thin, eat cuz they like too. not just cuz theyre hungry. i feel bad for folks who struggle with their weight. i work in a warehouse with two obese guys. and theyre far from lazy. but theyre both in their 50s. so maybe thats it. i know if i dont change my eating habits ill be fat in about 10 years. im 28 now. but we all have some sort of habit that is prolly not so good for us. fat people dont bother me. and i hope i dont bother them lol. but everyone no matter how open minded has a prejudice against someone. cuz we're human. as long as u dont treat someone badly for being different from yourself i guess its ok. sorry for rambling.

I was always really skinny, until I was about 16. I went on birth control, then, which slowed down my metabolism - and I kept the same eating habits I'd grown up with. Super venti frappucinos or whatever, mcdonalds, burger king, burritos...you name it. I went anorexic once my boyfriend finally said to me, "you know something? I've NEVER been physically attracted to you...and your sister's hot." Fast forward several years. I'm bipolar and I was put on a sedative called Zyprexa, which upped my appetite past recognition. Add to that a new form of birth control called Depo Provera, and I ballooned 50 pounds in a year. At my heaviest, I weighed 210 (I'm 5'10" or 5'11", depending on which doctor is measuring me LOL). I was recently put on a different medication called Geodon and, at the same time, had started dating a vegetarian who insisted on cooking for me, and the weight fell off. I'm steady at 180 (the dancing has helped tone me up, so I haven't lost pounds but I've lost inches), but I want to get down to 150, which I think is a healthy weight for someone of my height. He (my fiance) is going to help me eat even more healthily and exercise more regularly (aside from working, of course) and call me out if I look unhealthy (read: fat).

Obesity runs in my family and I am doing my damndest to avoid that fate.

People have a skewed perception on what is okay, I mean if the national average is 5'4 and wearing a size 14 than that means so many people are in denial. When I was dancing I wore a size six at 5'8 and everyone at the club would constantly tell me I needed to eat and blah blah blah which I always found funny because I weight 145 which is perfectly normal for my height. It's just becoming the social norm to be over weight and claim your curvy which is very sad.

I'd say that it is actually about 15%. Lots of those chemicals they add to food really mess up our glandes, thus, messing with our metabolism and such. Also, food allergies (like some other poster mentioned) is a big culprit; gluten is horrible. Thyroid problems are very, very common among lots of people in my mother's in law family (second marriage). Also, my husband was taking Prednisone for way over a year, and he gained over 300 pounds (despite he's 6'5", he looked very fat). Now, he is down to about 243 because he doesn't need them anymore...and is losing some more weight. Ah, don't forget the increased number of mental patients: many of those medications mess with people's metabolisms too. That is the reason why my mother is unable to lose more weight. She only managed to drop some serious weight when she had my little sister and wasn't allowed to take those meds. She nursed her, lost all her weight, but put the weight back in no time when she weaned her.

If that extra weight you have is solely muscle, it's ok for your height, 180 is an acceptable, healthy weight. I was in the upper 140's-lower 150's before I started doing weight training (I'm slightly shorter, a bit over 5'9"). I gained over twenty pounds in no time, but I still fit in my old clothes and looked almost the same (except my arms and legs, which looked really toned). Muscles is good, it will help you out to burn calories faster, so keep your tone. If you really, really want to lose some more, try to aim for the mid 160's not lower; you would still want to have some good fat (like boobs).

Not making excuses but some people yes are fat and can't help it. These people workout, eat healthy and are still fat. I would say they are the exception though. Many are like a friend of mine who complains about being fat then eats a whole container of ice cream at one sitting or goes to McDonalds and eats two Big Macs. I think it's because we have become a sedentary society. I always hear the problems about obese kids but then how come there weren't many fat kids when I was growing up? We were always playing outside and active. Oddly while I type this Michelle Obama is on Jeopardy talking about the child obesity problem and saying 1 in 3 kids are obese. Why?

For me right now I feel I am overweight. I'm not obese or even in plus sizes, but feel large. I've always been in excellent shape and to be a larger size bothers me. However instead of sitting around I've started working out again (slacked for the last few months)and I eat healthy and the weight is dropping. I'm also very muscular which can be a good thing but also bad, because muscles weigh more than fat.

The kids obesity problem makes me really mad at their parents. That's a form of negligence, too! And most kids I see these days are fat. Is everyone gonna be fat some day?

The polite factor about fat and weight is MESSED UP!
It won't be too much longer before overweight Americans will start experiencing some 'reality' ...

    - having their health insurance premiums / employer health insurance co-pays etc. raised to the same levels currently being charged to smokers to compensate for similar higher health care costs.

    - airlines starting to price tickets based not on the present 'per seat' basis but on a 'per pound' basis ( same as excess baggage ) to compensate for higher jet fuel costs.

    - employers enacting hiring policies which are unfavorable to overweight applicants using similar logic to smokers, i.e. higher than average time missed due to sick days, higher probability of developing a 'disability' etc.

For a fact, the higher costs which inevitably go along with being seriously overweight are presently being 'subsidized' - by people of normal weight in general, and by smokers in particular. As US National Health Care comes closer to reality, as fuel prices continue to rise etc, the cost of these 'subsidies' will reach a point where it simply can no longer be ignored.

Yes everyone will be fat and at this rate they say within 20 years something like 70% will be obese which is scary. Parents today feed their kids crap. Back when I was growing up fast food was a once a week treat or a birthday present, the rest of the time we ate healthy meals full of veggies and fruit and milks.
