Default how do you know if youre allergic to gluten?

I looked it up, but it's still kind of unclear to me.

I mean, I am not sure what bloated feels like...maybe I am always bloated so I don't know?

I don't know what tummy troubles they talk about-diarrhea and stuff?

Can someone clear this up a bit, maybe with some personal stories to help clarify?

Just curious, because someone posted about losing weight after discovering food allergies...and no matter what I do the weight the won't budge, so I was thinking maybe gluten, since I've cut out dairy and red meat?

See a nutritionist or dietician for a diagnosis

I'm gluten and casein intolerant, and Jesus fuck gluten is so hard to cut out of my diet. Be careful about removing too many food groups though honey - I know you're well versed in how to get enough nutrients but still, I worry.

Yes, the doctor can tell you. Go get tested.

A lot of the time it's very hard to diagnose food allergies from blood tests. \the gluten test can give you false negatives a lot of the time. The only way to know for sure is to do a food elimination diet. Cut out ALL forms of gluten from your diet for at least a month and see how you feel. You know your own body better than anyone.

Some of the symptoms (which are not only digestive) can be found here: http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddise...liac/#symptoms

A blood test can diagnose celiac disease, although sometimes the results are inconclusive– my test results were. They did show slightly raised levels of anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTGA), but nothing alarming. This may have been because I began eating a gluten-free diet a few months before my test.

Please keep in mind that even some people who aren't officially "celiac" still feel much better when they are following a gluten-free diet. My mother is a perfect example of this. And even if I one day found at that I DIDN'T have celiac disease, I would keep following this diet because I feel so horrible when I do accidentally ingest gluten. Cutting out gluten may also help you lose some of that extra weight.

You can be perfectly healthy without any gluten in your diet. Any nutritionist who tells you otherwise full of shit. In fact, many trainers of physique athletes recommend that their clients remove gluten from their diets.

I agree with Victoria... cut out the gluten and see how you feel.

Yes, a lot of people are intolerant to gluten which is different from celiac disease. Grains are actually incredibly toxic to the body while still in a raw state which is something to think about. Cutting out gluten before your test will result in a false negative usually. Even if you continue eating gluten a lot of people get false negatives. The only way to know for sure is to elminate it to see how you feel. I suffered for 25 long years before I realised it was gluten. The only symptoms I got was water retention and irregular periods along with terrible PMS. The doctors kept sending me for kidney tests even though they always came back fine. The symptoms vary greatly from person to person.

i'm not officially celiac but after an elimination diet my ibs like symptoms, flu like symptoms and migraines went away. i think it'd be strange your nutritionist would be against this considering eliminating gluten from your diet eliminates a lot of processed and generally bad food for you. it's not exactly healthy to be eating a lot of food with fillers (like wheat) for you and you can have replacements. i think it's a much much healthier way of eating and i know those who went on the elimination diet lost weight because of it. i didn't because i'm naturally already thin.

she didn't say not to eliminate it-I just thought of it after reading the other post about it. I've never actually brought it up with her...although I have expressed frustration to her about my inability to lose weight. Was just thinking maybe it is an undiagnosed food allergy, although I don't know. Was just curious

Where I don't doubt the seriousness of celiac disease or it's existence, I do think gluten is the trendy thing to be scared of these days. Gluten is like anything else- moderation.

yeah an intolerance is a very serious thing, it won't allow to absorb proper vitamins and other nutrients properly. i find it very annoying when people who don't have a problem with it cut it out of their diet altogether to lose weight or whatever. i'm not judging them, but it has become very trendy and it makes me mad cause if i could eat a piece of freaking sourdough bread or have a big sandwich on thick bread i would...the alternatives are ok but not the same. i don't there's any harm in doing an elimination diet for a month to see. but as a lifestyle when you don't have to...doesn't make sense to me. if one's conscious about the type of food their putting in his or her body and not eating processed foods all the time then i don't see it as unhealthy.

sorry, just a rant...my friend was like "oh i'll go gf so i can lose weight"

(this wasn't aimed at you papillon, just medio's post got me thinking)
