Default How long does it take to start losing wieght?

I've recently changed my diet and upped my exercise.

I was overeating (3000-4500 calories a day, easy) and spending 15-20 minutes on the treadmill.

About two weeks ago I cut out gluten from my diet to see if I started to feel better. I now keep a food diary and consume about 1000-1500 calories each day. I have oats for breakfast, a shake with flax seed for lunch, and then dinner varies. I also quit eating right before I go to sleep. I drink more water and have started drinking hot tea.
I've noticed I don't crave food like I used to and I don't need as much to get full.

For the past week I've started doing and hr and a half cardio and then about 20 minutes of stretching/pilates/floor work to warm up and cool down. I also do pole work for an hour or two in addition to, not instead of, cardio 2-3 days a week.

Now, I know a week of exercise isn't going to make much difference, but shouldn't the lack of bread and pasta and anything individually wrapped make a noticeable difference?

    I haven't lost a single pound.

I've been busting my ass in the gym since December, and I am JUST NOW starting to see real results. I have to really stay at it for at least month before my body changes, I have a stubborn body! Some people lose weight fast, and others it takes time. One thing though, after a month a ton of weight drops off all of the sudden, it's weird, so maybe you are like me! Just keep at it and stay focused!

Are you actually over-weight? You might be still eating something you're intolerant to, or you might have candida. Both can make it hard to lose weight. Have you cut out sugar too? Why not try eating less carbs and more protein?

Don't dip below 1300 calories, more high energy resistence weight training.

My weight skyrocketed from 118 to 150 very, very quickly so I'm trying to take it back off. I just checked the food I usually eat and added the carb percentages and I'm getting about 30% of the daily recommendation.

I'm consuming about 20-30 grams of sugar but this is a drastic decrease from before.

I've just about cut out red meat and eat mostly chicken.

Whenever I consume dairy I take a pill to help digestion, and I still can't eat any kind of cheese that isn't solid (that make sense?)

I think I'm going to look further into the Candida issue; I've tried checking into it but there's a lot of conflicting information. Any recommendations?

Would adding weights to my tae bo work?

Don't take any notice of the carb recommendation. That's why most of the western world is obese. Cut your sugar out completely, then reduce your carbs down to less than 50 grams a day. Eat an abundance of fresh veggies and lean proteins. it worked for me. You'll notice results very quickly but you'll have to stick to your new healthy lifestyle.

^^^This. You're still eating too many carbs and you need to cut out the sugar completely! Another benefit of low-carbing is that you can actually eat until you're full without worrying about calories. And trust me, once you go about a week completely free of sugar, you won't have any problems with emotional eating or even overeating.

If you don't believe me, I'll pm you before and after pics of me (I now live a low-carb lifestyle)

    I didn't think 1500 calories was starving...

Luna, this is just my recommendation to you..... Stop counting your calories, and start just focusing on eating healthy. You want to change your lifestyle, and do it in a way that will last. So, drastically cutting out foods and counting calories will cause you to burn out fast. Just focus on eating lean meat, lots of vegetables, and no fattening processed stuff. Drink only water or green tea, or something similar. ABSOLUTELY no sodas or carbonated beverages. Eat fresh fruit instead of drinking sugary juices. ALWAYS eat breakfast, and don't eat late, work out often, at least 5 days a week, but do a workout that doesn't KILL you. You want to make this your permanent lifestyle. Here's what I do, and I am getting awesome results:

3 Days a week of lifting weights:

10 minute warmup on elliptical or on the treadmill (if on the treadmill, incline up at 7 or 15, depending on my mood and speed at least 3.6)

I start on the Seated Leg Press: 15 reps @ 160-170 with my toes pointed out and legs at 90 degree angle, then another 15 reps with legs parallel at 90 degree angle, and toes pointed up.

Without stopping, I get on the ground and do 15 push ups.

I then exercise my arms using free weights: Shoulder Press, 15 reps using 15 lbs. (http://www.myfit.ca/exercisedatabase...ercises&ID=148), Then I do triceps, 15 reps using 15 lbs (http://exercise.about.com/od/exercis...xercises_2.htm), Then I do Single Arm Row again 15 reps @ 15 lbs on each arm (http://exercise.about.com/od/exercis...xercises_2.htm), Then I do Bicep curls 15 reps @ 15 lbs for each arm.

Now I do abdominals, usually on the decline abdominal crunches (http://www.shapefit.com/abs-exercise...-crunches.html) I do 25 reps.

This is one circuit. When I am done with all of this, I start over and do it all again. I try to get 2 circuits in 30 minutes. Sometimes I do three. You can't stop between exercises, you have to keep moving to keep your heart rate up. These will help you define your muscles and also burn fat. I really enjoy lifting weights!

2 Days a Week of Cardio

I just get on the treadmill (incline set at 7 or higher, speed at least 3.6) or the elliptical for an hour, keeping my heart rate at a steady challenging pace, but not killing myself. If I choose the treadmill, I will put the speed at 5.0 mph or higher every so often just to change things up. This is all I do on these days, except sometimes I will do abdominals at the end.

    1 Day of an Activity

I like to do a yoga or spinning class, or even just jog outside one day a week for a change.

    1 Day Off

Try this for a month and tell me you don't get some noticeable results! This has been working great for me! I also drink at least 4 liters of water a day and eat healthy. I cut out all alcohol recently so that I can get full results.

WARNING: Don't lift weights while you are hungover or have been drinking, you WILL get sick!

Resistance training is key! Yes, left weights, but also make sure you are getting enough calories to prevent you body from going into starvation mode. Your metabolism will slow way down and become extremely efficient at holding on to fat when you cut down below a certain level.

Calorie cycling is the fastest way to lose weight that I've found. Try eating 2200 calories one day then 1400 for two more days then back up to 2200 or so.

Add in weight lifting 3-4 times a week with heavy weights to build strength and muscle. Do cardio intervals 3-4 days a week for 20 minutes or less. That's it. You don't need to spend a ton of time exercising to lose weight, you just have to have quality workouts.

if you can only purchase CAFO meat, red meat is actually better than chicken because you can trim the fat (full of the antibiotics and such) and get cuts that have a somewhat decent omega 6: omega 3 ratio, which isn't really an option with CAFO chicken.

also, if they are available, duck eggs are better than conventional eggs, although the omega-3 fortified eggs are pretty commonly available these days and also a good choice above conventional chicken eggs.

i switched my eating patterns twice to lose weight-- once to a bodybuilder style diet (lean meat, vegetables, moderate carbs) and then to paleo/primal whole foods (more fatty and organ meats and animal products from healthy animals, organic local produce and 0-100g carbs a day, usually on the low end of that).

on the bodybuilder eating, i lost weight cyclically with my ovulatory cycle. nothing or just a few ounces weight loss for a couple weeks, then 2-3 pounds, stuff like that. so for a month i'd end up around 1lb/week average loss, but it wasn't showing up every week. also i lost both fat and muscle (some of this was due to committing overtraining errors).

on paleoish eating, i lost fat only, and my fat loss wasn't as bound to my ovulatory cycle, as i saw the loss occur weekly. i steadily dropped 1/2lb of fat and gained more and more muscle definition and strength. so my weight was a little higher, but i was *ripped*, so i learned to relax about the number on the scale.

the weight loss in both cases started in less than a month of dietary and exercise change. in both cases i did intensive, full body exercises, but i also did tons of 'chronic cardio' on the bodybuilding-type diet.

My god girl, you are a trooper! I think this is something I would have to build up to.

I also don't think I was very informative at first; I changed my eating habits to cut out gluten initially. I figured I might as well eat better while I'm at it, so I started keeping a journal.

I'm not setting a goal of X number of calories and then planning meals. I eat when I'm hungry and write down whatever that total happens to be. However, after the first few days I noticed my appetite dropped drastically and I no longer go back for 2nd's, 3rd's, or most commonly, 4th's at meals. I was eating constantly before.

The cravings for bread and pasta were the worst, but it's not so bad now. I'm learning to like rice.

I don't drink soda. I don't really like it. It burns going down. I drank it less than once a month so giving it up completely was easy. I gave up the occasional sweet tea because it gives me an upset stomach. (so does the hot tea, but it's mild.)

I have never had alcohol. No worries.

    Regular menu for me is:
Breakfast: oats with 1/2 teaspoon cane sugar 1/2 teaspoon honey

Lunch: shake. 1 cup milk, 3 tablespoons flax seed, 1 frozen strawberry, 1 tbsp honey

Dinner: grilled or baked chicken. I either grill on a Foreman or make a foil pouch with chicken, carrots, and potatoes or rice

Also, I don't run full force on the treadmill. I alternate between 3 and 5 mph and really really push myself the last 3-4 minutes. the rest I just keep my heart rate up and get ready for the next workout.
The tae bo doesn't leave me out of breath. I can definitely feel it in my muscles, but I feel good after I do it.
I stretch and do light floor work to cool down.
    It's tough, but I don't kill myself.

I was scared that cutting out the foods would be tough... but now that cravings have stopped it's been much easier on me.

Oh yeah, and a gym membership is out of the question at the moment; and suggestions on what else I can do at home that may be better? i only have a treadmill and youtube, lol.

    1. Put the incline up on the treadmill. It will help you burn more calories and it's more challenging.

    2. Buy a set of 5 and 10 lb weights to start. You don't need a gym to do those exercises I listed, and you can use them for.....

    3. Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred. It's probably the best workout DVD I have found for people starting out. P90X is good, but very intense.

    4. Have you heard of Stevia? To replace the sugar and honey you are using? It's ideal to cut out anything sweet, because even with artificial sweeteners you are tricking your body into craving sugar later.

    5. Chug as much water as you can. This will help you lose weight! When your body is fully hydrated, your organs are functioning at 100%, then your metabolism speeds way up. I lost the most weight ever in my life by just drinking 4 liters or more of water a day.

    6. Take supplements. I take a multi vitamin, vitamin D, Relora (for stress induced weight gain), very high quality fish oils, and Alpha Lipoic Acid. These help regulate blood sugar (which in turn controls cravings) and also help you to burn body fat while you develop muscle.

    7. Tea to help with water retention: http://www.nowloss.com/jillian-micha...diet-drink.htm I really love this tea, I've been drinking it for a long time.

    8. Some will disagree with me, but I LOVE drinking a Redline or sugar free Rockstar energy drink before a workout. It helps motivate me tremendously, and also speeds my heart rate up. It's my one vice!

JD has great advice. the 30 day shred is a kick ass workout.. I remember it took me awhile to get to Level 3 on the DVD without having to stop for a break. lol And going by the typical day of food you just posted, I think those calories are very restrictive and has the potential to sabotage your efforts for weight loss.. especially considering you're adding on physical activity. You gotta feed yourself *more* to keep your metabolism in check.

What can I add? And should I add it earlier in the day? I'm not really all the hungry for more food so I'll probably be forcing myself to eat it. I'll check out the shred video. I drink lots and lots of water constantly. But my skin still acts like it's dehydrated. (i can pinch my skin and it takes a while to go back to normal)

I take a multivitamin, and the flax seed gives 2600mg of omega 3 per 2tbsp. I like this since I can't seem to swallow fish oil pills.

More protein could probably really help boost the weight loss. You could do mini-meals or snacks that have a protein and a lipid if you like to keep the starches down! Sounds like you're doing great healthy things, though. Definitely consider the dvd

If grocery stores around you carry it, start drinking coconut water. You should be able to get it in the international/Goya section. I started drinking it lately and it's been my new vice, my skin and hair have been crazy soft! A friend of mine had similar results. It's full of healthy fats and also delicious and refreshing.

Also you should add some more food groups to your diet. Try eating a handful of raw almonds or other nuts once in a while as a healthy snack. You really need veggies too. Try making salads-olive oil and vinegar make a great dressing and olive oil is good for your skin and heart. Raw veggies like carrots or broccoli are great for snacking and steaming vegetables to eat with your dinner is really simple.

YES! Lola, I hope you're not buying Goya coconut water in a can! That stuff is LOADED with sugar! You should buy O.N.E. or ZICO brand, in a box. True coconut water has never touched the air, and there's a huge difference in taste and nutritional benefits between the canned kind and the box kind (not to mention a huge difference in price) The two boxed kinds take it from young coconuts, and it has never touched the air, so it's Fresh! I'm not so sure about the canned ones...

I don't by Goya although I do buy another canned brand. Can't remember off the top of my head but I think it's called Jamaican Choice? I dunno. I also get Z.I.C.O. sometimes from my yoga studio and the Jamaican Choice stuff has only a couple grams more sugar-I think 18 vs. 15, and comes in a bigger can. I can definitely see your point though, Z.I.C.O. does taste "fuller" if that makes sense. Like it's more coconut and less sugar water.

Oh yea. I usually eat salads like crazy. I'm just 15 miles from the grocery store and haven't made the trip this week to get supplies. I use the Italian dressing that you have to mix yourself.

Is there a big difference in steaming veggies yourself vs. just buying the frozen kind you steam in the microwave? I don't have a steamer so just wondering...

I eat raw carrots all the time. Love them. Broccoli makes my tummy hurt

I also usually throw slivered almonds on my salad or eat them as a snack. I have to be careful though, my boyfriend is severely allergic and had to have a tracheotomy last time he came in contact with almonds. Also, if I have more than a few, I get a stomach ache.

Fruit is a little harder to come by since it's out of season right now. I bought some strawberries the other day and they were moldy. F*ing gross. I do toss frozen berries into my shake though. They're more flavorful than the fresh ones.

I'll definitely check out the coconut stuff. As far as I know though, the walmart here (only grocery store) has an international section that consists of ramen noodles and soy sauce. That's about it lol.

Woah, that sounds amazing too me - mind you, I'm no weight loss Guru. I don't think I've ever dieted like this long-term. Mind you, I have done it before for 1 - 2 months at a time, and at first I was losing 5 -7 lbs a week (wasn't overweight to begin with either, just on the chubbier side of healthy weight for my height). By the 4th week I would slow down to 3 pounds a week or so. Maybe that's becasue I also completely cut out carbs?

If you keep working at it, the weight WILL come off. Also, remember - no two people think exactly alike in terms of weight loss, so you're bound to get all kinds of conflicting advice.... just do what feels right for your body.

3,500 calories add up to one pound. So to lose a pound, you need to burn 3,500 calories more than you consume.

Personally, i had the best results when i went on a very strict diet. I cannot cook for the life of me, which ended up being a blessing and a curse. i found a few foods that i could eat raw and pretty much lived off of them for a month. I think most of my diet consisted of salmon, avocados, and kale. I looked a lot better after a month of this along wiht some HIIT. Then finals week came and then moving and then a mental vacation mode and now im trying to get back to where i was in mid december.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.
