    Default Sick AGAIN...

I got sick again Sunday evening towards the end of my shift. I toughed it out to the end of the night since it was only a tickle in my throat, and the next day I went to the doctor. Bacterial test came back negative, doctor told me it's another viral bug, gave me some prescription-grade Tylenol Cold, sent me on my way.

BTW, my symptoms include: NO fever, hacking cough to the point of vomiting, swollen and very sore throat, tons of phlegm, sinus buildup, body aches/chills/sweats, abdominal pain, and extreme fatigue.

Well the uber Tylenol Cold helped that evening and the next morning. I had tickets for a concert Tuesday evening so I took one pill with me for the road, and rocked out. 1/3 of the way home I had to ask my friend to drive the rest of the way because I just CRASHED.

Wednesday my dad has to drive me to the doctor, just like last month. I tell the doc the uber Tylenol isn't working anymore (the pill I took the night before didn't touch it) so she prescribes me a Z-pack.

My doctor wrote me a note excusing me from work until next Monday, and has ordered me on permanent bedrest. She told me if I try to push myself with this, there's a good chance I'll end up in the hospital with viral pneumonia. (she knows I'm a dancer and work around a lot of cigarette smoke, and my club has mold/mildew during the damp months of the year)

I'm a full-time student (14 credit hours) and this is my first semester working full time (42 hours between dancing and my 10-hr internship). I average 60 hrs a week between school and work, and I am averaging 5-7 hours a night in sleep (there's no fixing this. I get home at midnight from dancing, take a 20-30 minute shower and have class at 9 the next morning).

I see all these other students who can handle a full-time job and school and do just fine... I guess not everyone can do it, though. This is the second time this has happened this semester.

I'm starting to wonder if I should quit dancing until the summer and quit when the fall semester starts.

You know what, I NEVER get sick, but I have been very sick this month.

First it was a sore throat and I lost my voice completely, that lasted over a week and a half. Then I was fine for a week, now I am coughing and coughing, my chest hurts, I have a head ache and a stuffy nose, been going on now for a while.

A lot of people I know are sick right now, think it's just that time of year, hope you feel better soon.

Between mold, smoke, and the insanely high fees you posted about in another thread...

Maybe you should just move to a better club. You've been dancing long enough to get the hang of things, right? (Not trying to be catty, I just don't know exactly how long you've been in the business although I know you're fairly new.)

Is there anywhere else in the area where you could earn the same amount or more in fewer shifts? Then you would be able to get more rest. I know for me personally, getting an adequate amount of sleep is crucial to my health and I often get sick from missing too much sleep.

I think you are over working yourself. Work a bit less if you can and concentrate on school. That is if you have to work, if not...take that break until the summer.

Insanely high fees? Those are just dock fees. My house fee is only $30, and I'm really good about being on time and calling in to work. The smoke and environmental hazards are my big beefs.

Honestly, my club is where the money is in my area. Girls from the other clubs are coming to my club because no one's spending money at the other clubs anymore.

Pixie - I don't HAVE to work. I live at home while I go to school. It's just nice having the spending money and not having to rely on my dad for everything when I have two siblings who refuse to even look for jobs.

I do like dancing. I've been at it for almost 2 months now. But as far as health goes, I might just quit after Spring Break and come back when the semester is over...

    Default Z-Pack?

I'm a little confused. Why would your doctor prescribe you Z-pack for a VIRAL infection? That's Zithromax, an antibiotic right? For bacterial infections...and they say the health care system is screwed-up. Good grief.

In any event it sounds like you're over doing it. Best to rest up and defer the stripping.

^ doctors here do that all the time. It really freaking pisses me off. I swear they just prescribe antibiotics for everything.

If you don't have to work why not just cut down the hours? 32 hours of dancing?

I'm also full time student (21-30 hours class time in my program). I also have classes on a second campus which is 1.5 hours drive away once a week. Veterinary Science being freaking hard I can't possibly think of working on a school night. I also volunteer 4 hours a week and I will have small pracs and internships throughout the year to add. I only work about 10-20(max) dancing and I do have to work since I don't live at home.

Why not drop one or two shifts? Most clubs are a bit more relaxed for university students. Mine for example makes everyone work 7 hour shifts unless you are in Uni, a parent or have a 2nd job. Then you can do 5 hour shifts.

I could try asking for fewer shifts. The thing is, my club increases house fees for girls who don't work as much (I already pay $20 more per week than all the other girls). Asking for a smaller shift wouldn't be worth an increase in house fees because most nights I'd end up devoting 1/3 or even 1/2 on a bad night of my earnings to the next day's house fee. The only other option would be to ask for one fewer shift (dropping it to 24 hours of dancing - 34 hours total working).

My concern with the latter is that I'm still up late and losing sleep, and it's really, REALLY hard to wind down coming home from midnight after being active for 8 hours, and finding a decent amount of rest in 5-6 hours to recover from that is just out of the question.

59 - I told my doctor that my friend had something similar, too, and my weak immune system may have allowed her to pass it to me and hit me harder than it did to her. The Z-pack was given to my friend to prevent any post-viral bacterial infections such as ear and/or sinus infections (which IS common after a viral cold). So my doctor did the same for me. But she didn't give me anything to help ease the pain or knock me out so I could sleep. And OTC can only help so much when you're hit that bad.

Sorry that you're feeling so poorly and that OTCs aren't helping. It's a bad spiral - need rest badly but can't sleep.

Not a doctor but we've all heard and read that antibiotics are overprescribed, for conditions not requiring them, and that bacteria are building up resistance and immunity to them because of it. I personally wouldn't take antibiotics (especially such a strong one) preemptively. IF I developed the ear or sinus infection (I tend to get sinus infections most frequently) I'd go back to the doctor and get the prescription.

We're all adults and make our own choices. But I stand by my previous statement, the health care system is screwed up!

    Aaaagh my god.

Saturday I started feeling better. I went to see a movie with my dad, went on a walk, played some Left 4 Dead...

Then Saturday night I woke up SCREAMING bloody murder with the WORST ear infection I have ever suffered from. I never really got ear infections in the past, and when I did, it was more of a nuisance than anything, but this was all-out, hot-poker-in-my-eardrum, debilitating PAIN.

I ended up waking the whole house up and my brother went to go get me some generic anti-inflammatory ear drops, which helped the piercing pain and the throbbing, but the pain was still there. Sunday I was bedridden again with fatigue and a mild fever. Today I doped myself to go to school because I was out all last week (bedridden 5 days total through this fucker!) and went to the doctor afterwards.

Turns out BOTH of my ears are infected, and it's travelling to my throat via my eustachian tubes, threatening to turn into a bacterial throat infection. I told her the Z-pack helped with the congestion and the head cold, but I was confused as to why I had the ear infection.

"Well Z-pack doesn't really target the ears... I'll give you some Omnicef for that."

    AAGH WHAT THE FLYING FUCK.

Granted. Omnicef does WONDERS for ear infections. But seriously, this has had me since last Sunday!

I'm going on vacation to California for Spring Break starting March 13. I called my club I won't be back until after I get home from vacation. I need time to get to 100% and stay at 100% for awhile.

that sucks, you should find some comfort in knowing that all of those things are probably related though. infections tend to spread easily through the nose/ears/eyes sometimes. i've gotten frickin pink eye from a cold before. it happens, just like ear infections do. you probably had a nasty virus and it developed into a bacterial ear infection. most likely though, you didn't need the original antibiotics. as people were saying, if it's viral, antibiotics are pointless and potentially harmful. the severe pain and fever though, probably means you DO have a bacterial infection in your ears. likely brought on by lingering viral yuck (technical term). overworking yourself can surely lead to stress and a weakened immune system, but the body is pretty good at bouncing back. take some time to yourself and you'll start feeling better in no time. also, remember that it's cold and flu season. you work in close contact with people AND you sit in crowded classrooms that likely have some sort of attendance policy.. which causes students to show up sick. even the healthiest of people wind up catching bugs when they're around people in those types of settings for long person of times. tis the season.
