Pardon my ignorance. I just steamed it with the broccoli but it turned out soft and pretty much looked dead after that LOL. How long should it be steamed for?
I like the way they do it at asian restaurants where it is still crisp.

There are many stereotypes about the industry that I work in. Sometimes they can be true but human beings are very diverse creatures and cannot be pigeon-holed into one category.

This is how Delia Smith recommends you cook it - and she's the 'Cookery Goddess' here in the UK:
To cook the asparagus, lay the stalks on an opened fan steamer (or an ordinary steamer will do) then place them in a frying pan or saucepan. Pour in about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of boiling water from the kettle, then season with salt and put a lid on. If you are cooking a large quantity they can be piled one on top of the other in a steamer in a large saucepan.
Steam for 5-6 minutes, depending on the thickness of the stalks, or until they feel SLIGHTLY tender when tested with a skewer.
Serve the asparagus on hot plates with some hollandaise sauce or melted butter poured over the tips, or warm or cold with a good vinaigrette.
Never fails............

Oh thanks I'll give that a try! Might work better in fry-pan maybe. This is the second time I've ruined them lol.

I dump it in boiling water for about a min or two, then for cold salads take it out and immediately dunk it in cold water with ice cubes. You have to boil it for just a min or so if you want it hot or it'll get all goopy and gross. Asparagus is my favorite veggie! Yummers!

Nuking it will make it mushy fast. I just boil some water in a saute pan. Throw in cleaned asparagus and some sea salt..sometimes boil a little olive oil with the water too for richness. Don't cook it more than 2 minutes. Drain, enjoy. Takes less time than the microwave and won't kill the vitamins in it!
I like to roast it in the oven, sautee it, steam it, or Blanche it. It's done when it turns bright green. When it reaches that color, take it off the heat immediately.

Had some yesterday! Yummy, yummy! Cooked it tender crisp and tossed it with diced tomatoes and some onion, then doused it with Balsamic Vinager and a drizzle of Olive Oil and some crumbled Feta. Nummy, nummy! I ate a HUGE bowl for dinner!
