So I have polycystic ovarian syndrome basically meaning i have too much testosterone and dont get the normal women stuff-- as in i very rarely have my period etc etc. The wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polycystic_ovary_syndrome

I never have had a regular period, but i went on birth control at 16 and then switched to nuva-ring so i never noticed until i stopped when i was 19. well for a while i was happy to essentially never have my period, i went to a Dr to make sure i wasnt dying found out i had this and proceeded to pretty much ignore it. But while ignoring it, my acne got progressively worse. I dont have a lot of the extreme symtoms listed (im not overweight and i dont have a mustache) but the bad skin affected me. I went on a very strict diet last fall and winter, and it helped a lot, and i actually had 2 periods spaced 1 month apart, which hasnt happened ever without birth control. And my acne cleared up a lot.

But then finals and graduation and moving and the diet slipped and my periods are pretty much gone again, and my acne came back. I am cleaning up my diet again, but since i was on a very strict diet before and it seems if i stray from it at all the problems are here, i want to look for another way. Id rather not go on the pill.

I have been looking up acupuncture. Ive always thought it sounded like a bogus treatment... i guess the logic behind sticking needles in your body to make it heal seems weird. but since a wholistic approach of fixing my diet helped before, im thinking since acupuncture falls under 'wholistic medicine' maybe it is the route to go.

so has anyone had acupuncture? I doubt there are any ppl wtih PCOS on here who have, but has anyone had any other experiences with it? I am curious. Does it hurt? I found a place in austin that has raving reviews on google... Im skeptical, but im so sick of having this acne that i am willing to be open minded and try it.

also i dont want to go to a real dr. Right now my insurance is the kind that basically is only useful if i am dying. I dont want to pay for the stupid blood tests etc etc again... i know it will be expensive. The acupuncture doesnt seem too pricey... i think its going to be like 100-150$ a session. I can afford that no issue.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

I've had lots of acupuncture. It really worked for me, but I've had it done more for sports injuries than for hormonal imbalances. And no, it's not painful at all when it's done by a skilled practitioner. Tap your finger firmly on your skin. That's what it should feel like.

Hey we are twinkies! I am in Austin and have PCOS and shit for insurance as well. I have heard nothing but awesome things about acupuncture. I am a massage therapist and have my clients all tell me how great it is. So I was thinking of doing it for the reasons you are saying. You should also look into take chasteberry/vitex. Google it. It really helps. Also, get your hands on some spironolactane. Either from your doc or medsmex.com.

I have not had the acupuncture but have taken classes on accupressure and know all the pressure points. It really is amazing stuff.

I believe Nakita does acupuncture, I think I saw her mention it on Twitter a few days ago. Maybe ask her?

Not at night...that's when the stars have rather better things to do. They're coming out, shining, that sort of thing.

I am currently on an acccupuncture treatment to cure a hormone imbalance. I don't have what you have but my hormones are out of wack from being on birth control for years. My symptoms included sticky lubrication during sex and painful sex. Very painful. My treatment is 3 months long and I come in for accupuncture once a week. After just the second treatment I noticed a huge difference in the level of pain during sex. It's now 3 months later and I have no pain during sex and my lubrication is back to normal. Prior to the accupuntuce I went to about ten different doctors, all of them told me nothing was wrong with me and that it was in my head. Gynos don't know crap. They just kept taking swabs and cultures and telling me I was fine, use some lube. Easy to say when your not the one in pain.

I say try it and be open to the possibilities that something wonderful could happen.

Thanks. im going to make an appointment. The doctors were able to sort out the problem through blood tests... but treatment for PCOS seems to generally just be birth control.

They will help with your hormones, which in turn will help with your acne. Spiro did wonders for my acnce. My mom said it did wonders for her excess hair. Someone else had a thread on here about that stuff and how it helped them. I believe it was Charlie61, but I may be wrong. Chasteberry/Vitex will help like the Spiro does. Also, I take Yasmin, which has 25mg of Spiro added in it. Yasmin has also helped me TONS! I have also noticed a change when I just watch my diet, no more gluten or dairy. That seems to help, too. But I honestly can't stick to the diet!

Oh and they say low carb is good for PCOS, too. Something about the carbs spiking the insulin. Insuling is a major hormone. And as the Doc explained to me, he said that when your insulin is out of whack, all other hormones will fall out of whack. He put me on metaformin for a while, but it made me sick and I couldn't hang.

My doctor was Dr. Allon in Houston. He was Texas Monthly's super doctor of the year. I highly recommend seeing him if you can.

I get acupuncture to treat a pain disorder that is greatly affected by hormone imbalances. It has been really helpful, though not a miraculous cure for me. It helped to have a background in meditation going into the acupuncture treatments, to get more out of the experience. Good luck, please update about how you are feeling after a few treatments I'm really interested to see if its of any benefit to you
