Default Does Your Club Refuse To Play Music Of Your Choice?

I've been dancing now for 5 years or so and never before have I come across clubs that refuse to play songs that a dancer requests while she's on stage. My club insists on "upbeat" music only. Nothing slow.

A while back, I once read a review that customers enjoyed the music at one club because they played a VARIETY. I once had to sit with a customer for at least half an hour for a slower song to be played just to do a lap dance because the DJ played nothing but rock.

The reason for "upbeat" music is they don't want to slow the club down or have customers falling asleep. This is oxy moron. If a person has had too much to drink or has been up 48 hours or so, they're bound to crash no matter what kind of music is being played. Customers complain all the time about the upbeat music and say they want to hear something slow from time to time especially during lap dances.

If that's not enough, the owner of another club doesn't want any old songs being played. What about customers who tip $100 or more when a girl is dancing to an old song that just happens to be a favorite of the customer???? Needless to say, business has not increased for that club at all. The song selection should be up to the one who is on the stage performing to it.

The economy has made this business hard enough. The last thing we need is to have someone dictate what we can dance to.

Ugh, yes. At my club we have one DJ who is a power-tripping dick. I like dancing to heavier music, but he will only play like a quarter of what I request. He claims that "no one knows the songs" and that the mood in the club goes down. However, I usually get some of the best responses from the crowd because I play different music. I think it's pretty obvious that men get sick of listening to top 40 hip hop over and over.

Yes. Blush in pittsburgh. That club and that DJ can blow me. not to mention the DJ would also forget my name and forget to alert the housemom before my first stageset (that was the system there as there were no speakers in the DR). i cant believe they made me tip that guy... if i ever worked there again, which i wont unless i feel like doing it to cause some serious hell for the place, i would go on a huge tirade about how i am an independent contractor and cant be forced to pay the dj anything (didnt know that at the time). I would also probably break something and possibly punch someone. probably best that i dont ever go near that building again.

    but anyway, i digress.

other than that, no DJs have always been agreeable, within limits of course. its not uncommon for clubs to limit the rap and metal played, and thats not a bad thing considering some of hte younger girls would probably want some hardcore screamo bullshit unless the djs said no-- and that shit really kills the crowd and is difficult to give dances to.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

I've seen plenty of clubs like this. I love dancing to ultra slow and very sensual music, so I actually see it a lot. Some clubs even go as far as too put signs up saying "No song requests", "No dancers in the DJ booth", or listing song styles that aren't allowed: rap, country, etc. or even "Only top 40 songs".

It bites, but I've never seen a club back down on it.

I once auditioned for a club like this. I am really into music (most of the time more than the DJs) and always choreographed my set to certain songs. This club had a rule where you could only dance to what they told you. I didn't like this but still auditioned. That is until I found out that the only music they played was awful teenybopper music. I never worked there because I only dance to certain music (classic rock and alternative). I know other clubs had this rule and it made me mad. Not all dancers like to dance to the same music and some hate the music. Shouldn't it be their choice what to dance to?

The last club I was at the DJ would play nothing but rap... it was awful! There was a jukebox system until later in the evening when the DJ took over. I can handle dancing to R&B (some of it I really like), but I don't really know the names of the songs. Rap though, especially modern rap, I know pretty much nothing about.

Wow, where is this club? Is the complete opposite here rap is banned or reduced to once song per hour. Meanwhile I have to listen to heavy metal songs about anal rape and drug overdoses.
The funny thing is I dance to nearly everything except techno and I have made the mistake of telling DJs this and they seem to always just play me all rock all the time.
Also the clubs here force you to tip the DJs too. So the clubs were the get their mandatory money the lazier they are.
Currently Im at a club where the music has always been rock and they are just now in 2010 starting to play what they "think" is hip-hop and r&b.

How can you be the "DJ" and have a narrow minded preference towards music?

Oh and I love the "we only play top 40" clubs... since when is a techno remix of every single song top 40?

HUGS to everyone with crappy or handcuffed DJs.
The worst they can say is no.

We only play "upbeat" music now too. We still play a wide variety of music though, but if there are too many "rap" girls, they will limit it. I only dance to rock, but they don't want you to dance to really heavy rock or rock that "most people won't know." Our DJ's are pretty flexible and try to be as accomodating as possible. If you want to dance to a heavier metal song, they ask that you dance to a toned down metal song for your second song onstage. I don't know why any club would restrict variety down that much.

My club lets us dance to whatever we want, thank god. Some nights all of us will be rocker chicks, and other nights I'll be the only one. Because of that, I rarely get to give private dances to my kind of music. Last night was really bad...two girls in a row were doing three-song sets to these awful generic R&B songs that were really slow with no real beat and no depth...I find that I can give really intense dances to hard songs. I don't dance fast or anything...but it lets me be intense without feeling I'm in forced slow-motion. Slow songs can definitely work, but they've got to be GOOD songs.

Only one dj at my club has my music and will play the songs i request for me, needless to say i overtip him. I dance to heavy metal - helps keep me awake on stage. Other dj's dont have my music or simply think its too heavy for the club. well F them, I always bank when I dance to stuff I like because I'm more into it.

My club likes to keep it light on the rap, r&b and hiphop. The DJs actually love me because of what I dance to. I feel bad sometimes that the hiphop girls can only dance to what is deemed "radio friendly".

This is one reason I liked working in a placw with a jukebox. While we were limited, and the manager could cut songs, in general I could play more of what I wanted.

I mean, I'll dance to pretty much anything but most country or rap....

however, I did best to specific types of music. Usually considered, in my most recent club, either too slow or too "heavy" (i.e. linkin park, etc.) to play. Well, lo and behold, when i could dance to those, I got more tips because I danced really well to them because the music itself worked for me. Plus, more guys than I think they thought would, seriously liked my choice in music.

My place started out playing nothing but techno. They finally changed. However they still had a lot fo rules.

I dont think they should just play whatever the girl wants, cause well, sorry, but i've seen customers cringe from stuff some girls have picked. I do think they should watch the stage and the girls and see if the crowd seems ok with what is being played. If so, go with it. If not, don't play it, even if the girl insists.

In the end, we are there to make money. Doing so requires the customer to be having fun, not the dancer (it;s called work ladies, not fun). so keep an eye on what the customer likes.

I've heard too many similar complaints about music to say "just play what the girls want"

The club where I work, the girls can pick their music. However, rock usually doesn't translate well w/ our customer base. Rap, r&b, pop, reggaeton, and thank god, almost any electronica as long as it isn't trance or too loungey.

One of the DJ's who was recently suspended told me no Portishead or Massive Attack on Friday or Saturday nights. Otherwise, they let me play what I wanted, but I know what doesn't work.
