    Default Safe Late Night Snacks?

I know, I know. I shouldn't be eating before bed, but sometimes I am just starving! I really can't stand that feeling when my body goes into starvation mode either, I like my body to feel nice and balanced, without the blood sugar swings. Also, I feel like I burn more body fat and retain my muscle this way. My schedule is so weird and inconsistent that I have to eat close to bedtime sometimes, or else I can't even fall asleep. This is not often though, maybe once or twice a month.

So.... what are some safe foods to eat late? I am thinking I am fine as long as I avoid carbs, so last night I had some turkey meat and hard boiled egg whites. Is dairy okay? I cut out almost all dairy a while back, but am now bringing back occasional white cheese and greek yogurt in the mornings, so I get enough calcium.

    Any suggestions?

If I am being good I'll go for yogurt or meat as you said ie. ham slices or turkey slices (whatever lunch meat I've got). I actually also have a salad sometimes. Sounds funny, but it's easy to make. Not too sure about how good it would be for digestion though.

You need something to settle your digestion down at night - not send it into overdrive. Hot, sweet 'Horlicks' or Cocoa - and two or three chocolate biscuits. Not really too healthy, but it will kill the hunger pangs and help you sleep much better. Which is safe!

It's ok to eat before u sleep if the alternative is going to be a disturbed sleep due to u being starving. U will not get adequate rest otherwise.

Before I go to sleep sometimes I eat celery sticks and dip them in low fat cottage cheese.

I wouldn't personally eat meat before bed coz that feels heavy to me. I will only eat something light or I tend to get nightmares.

I know that I used to eat those Quaker rice patty like things before bed... the ones that come in different flavors or whatever... but I was watching some TV talk show the other day and they suggested that for snacks, you make sure whatever you're eating has fiber. It makes you feel fuller and is good for you. I personally LOVEEE the Fiber One bars that are peanut butter. You know those commercials that say "Fiber yes, cardboard no." Because they're SOO delicious and don't taste plain at all. I swear they taste better than a candy bar and they're low in calories, but high in good stuff for you. I would definitely try those for a late night snack, they help my sweet tooth too!

I either have fruit like an apple or pear, with some peanut butter crackers. Or some "smart" popcorn, granola bar, or hummus with some pita bread. Sometimes I will eat a yogurt or a small bowl of cereal. If its the weekend (I get home about 6 AM on weekends) I will eat an egg mcmuffin from McDonalds with a skim milk hot chocolate.

I know this sounds like a dumb questions, but what is the scientific evidence that states that eating at night is unhealthy? Well, unless you are a mogwai you probably could eat a light meal at night and not suffer any negative repercussions.

I've eaten at night an hour or two before sleep my whole life. I'm normal weight and have never struggled with obesity. I usually just have like a bowl of cereal or fruit or other light foods. I don't eat a 1000 calorie meal, of course, but 250 calories is enough to help me relax in the evening and go to bed.

Cottage cheese is a good late night snack.

If you're really starving at night, you may not be eating enough during the day. Do you eat a lot of vegetables? I stick to lean proteins and either have a fat or carb with each meal. For carbs I eat beans, brown rice, sweet potatoes, etc. I also eat a huge salad or a big bowl of vegetables with every meal. I kind of hate eating vegetables with my breakfast but it does prevent that feeling of starvation.

If your body is hurting because you're hungry, I think you're better off eating than not. As long as you avoid junk food you should be fine.

Anything, really. maybe not a lot of caffeine or sugar, but I don't think it matters.

Know just what you mean, I get that hungry starving feeling too! I love cottage cheese, it's supposed to be good for the digestive, like yogurt. I thaw organic frozen straberries (Tr. Joe's) to put in. I also like oatmeal, the steel cut Irish one has little/no sugar, except it takes awhile to cook

Cottage cheese or a greek yogurt/kefir smoothie is perfect. Cottage cheese is a perfect before bed snack as the way it is digested is optimal for eating before sleep. If you'd like more information and details I'd be happy to provide, but it's a lot of typing. LOL.

I usually have no problem eating a bit before bed when Im hungry. I usually have yogurt, fruits, salad, canned fruits I love! Sometimes I even go for a brownie that is pure chocolate and I just melt into relaxation! Yesterday I ate chicken fried rice at 2am before bed, which was fine on my tummy. Its weird since I only have problems with milk, cheese products, and ice creams before bed. Go with something light with little fat, and stay away from the huge big meals.

My personal trainer told me that as long as you maintain the right amount of calories from the proper ratios of food sources, it shouldn't matter when you eat. But of course, eating immediately before bed can give a person bad sleep, bad dreams.

Yes, this is interesting. Do you mind elaborating?

I think it is best not to eat anything late night. It will increase acid production in your stomach and cause all sorts of unsavory problems, which I am reluctant to outline in detail.

I have always been a midnight snack person. My mom was too. Never bothered my stomach unless I ate something heavy or gross like fast food.

My current favs are cheese on low fat high fiber crackers like Triscuits, peanut butter on whole grain bread and baby carrots dipped in spicy mustard. Going to bed hungry and with nothing in my stomach actually makes me have more issues with acid. Having a bit of something in my tummy to soak up the acid( I also take Nexium for my acid issues) helps me a lot.

Sorry, I am just realizing that you ladies work late. Well in that case, your body adjusts in accordance with your new schedule for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some of you probably eat your dinner at 04:00am.

I grab a handful of almonds, some hummus on homemade baked tortilla chips, some frozen grapes or blueberries, or make a sugar free, skim hot chocolate (use Cocoa and Splenda). All of these are healthy and have never seemed to cause weight gain. I actually tend to stay thinner when I have a bedtime snack...prob cause I usually only do this when I'm eating 5 or 6 small meals a day.

Milk. It will fill you up and especially warm milk will make you go to sleep.

That's a good idea. I will sometimes eat an apple or some strawberries. Simple foods (raw fruit, veggies) go through the digestive track faster then foods containing fats/complex sugars. You ideally want to go to bed on a empty stomach that way your body can focus on other things while you sleep and not digesting food.

^^If you do this the other things your body will be focusing on are breaking down the protein in the lining of your stomach and your muscles. It's not such a good idea if you are trying to stay toned....tho you may lose weight, it'll be muscle. (It's completely physiologically impossible for you to break down fat for energy without being in ketosis long enough to at minimum deplete the liver and muscles store of gycogen, which takes about a day on average...or a more complicated muscle building thigie, which I barely understand myself...point being if you are already at a good weight, which JD is, don't skip meals when hungry, it'll make you look worse not better.)

*I'm on pain meds from yet ANOTHER freakin surgery, so if I screwed up any of this info I'll correct it when I make it through the fog. Feel free to correct me, just be nice, or you'll make my medicated, overly cuddlly self cry. haha*

Ok on that note, can somebody explain ketosis and fat burning in greater detail for me? I have heard that you burn the MOST fat while sleeping. Would I be messing this up by eating late before bed, even if it is something light or just protein? Also, if I eat carbs before bed will those be burned in the a.m.? I have also heard to eat a carbohydrate rich meal before bed the night before a marathon or some physically strenuous activity. Somebody explain this please!
